Good form!!! A Hook WIP thread...

Okay, so after almost 2 years I've decided to grant Travis' number one wish and make him a Hook costume. The possibly best version of Hook from the Spielberg '91 film.

Only problem is...resources for reference are few and far between... so if anyone can offer ANY assistance in images, information and resources it would be infinitely appreciated!!

I've got a handful of photos to get me started, but that's literally about it. Maybe 5. :\ And the DVD obviously...but I was hoping for some hi-res stills or costume info that anyone may have come across in the past 19 years...

Target date for completion on this on is Halloween!

First decision...whether to make the coat of velvet or suede...suede is more piratey, I feel...but velvet is just so much more luxurious. Hmm...

And any recommendations for the boots and wig would be fantastic!

I love this costume!

The wig is called a "full bottom wig," Unfortunately I've never had the occasion to purchase one for a show yet, so I don't really have any resources.

The frock coat I may have in 1/4 scale pattern that can be scanned. The whole costume is very Louis XIV, Baroque period.

The shoes can be altered fairly easily if you can find something that is of similar shape. Depending on the size of Travis' foot, including women's heels into your search could also be an option (women sizes are 1.5 bigger than mens, i.e. a men's size 10 = a woman's size 11.5). They are indeed shoes though. With a very large tongue. The stockings have embroidery up the sides called "clocking."

Hope this helps.

I am SO jealous. :lol I had a serious fangirl moment upon getting my picture taken with Hook at Dragon Con last year. Perhaps he is a member here and can chime in with some input for you?

Thanks to both!

DM Thank you so much for the info! I was looking at lds heels already. I work in a shoe store so I had thought that up already. :D I find it's closer to a 2 size difference, however...though maybe that's just cause my store runs smaller ( ALDO ... and yes... I've dealt with men trying on ladies heels before. XD ). The info on the pattern and wig will help a lot in my searches...thanks again!

iycis, I would hope that Hook is a member here! That's some fine work, thank you for posting the picture...even other peoples' costumes help for reference on this!

Res'd because Halloween is coming and I'm officially starting this costume!!!

Went to scout resources at my local Fabricland today to my horrible dismay. They had NOTHING useful...

I was originally thinking of a velveteen for the coat...nothing. I did find a very heavy dull satin which might look nice. It has VERY little sheen to it, but I really wanted something totally matte.

I'm also having trouble finding any gold trims. A crochet lace for the hat and then just patterned or braided stuff for the coat...can anyone point me in any direction for online resources?

Would be much appreciated!

First off...the internet is your friend. I have had a lot of luck finding historical trims on Ebay for projects of mine. Do a search for gold metallic trim and start looking. There are some very good trim sellers who have stores set up on there.

Red velveteen is not hard to come by online either and most online fabric stores offer swatches. Don't settle for satin just because that's all they have in your local store.

I was looking at Ebay and did find a few options for the trim, a lot of them were mesh or sequined but a couple options is a better start than none. Found velveteen there too!

I just like to be able to hop onto an online store and see a nice generous stock instead of scouring for hours. I guess I'm just not used to having to buy all of my supplies online at all since I can usually get what I need locally. BooOoOOoO!

Okay, here's a bit of a tougher question...where can I find a DARK grey wig? Obviously we'll settle for black, but I noticed while capping the movie that it's all a dark dark grey. If I bought a heat resistant ( and chemical safe ) wig in light grey....could I use a black " touch of grey " mens dye? Or does that somehow work with pigments in real hair? Hmmm

I support this 100% ! I love te bajesus out of this movie. Totally underrated (although not without flaws) but best version of Captain Hook ever !

Trap Joe is the man you seek. He owns the original hero costume:

Had to take the pics down, but I bet a PM is worthwhile :thumbsup

Right! Done and done. I think I actually got to save the pics when he had them posted up, but hopefully he can offer some further advice and maybe some closeup detail shots if I'm lucky!

Thanks for reminding me!! Fingers crossed...this would be SO helpful...

It's funny I found this thread because I was just looking for patterns online to work on my own Captain Hook costume. If you find any good patterns, I'd sure be grateful to you if you shared them with me. I'll do the same with you if I find anything good! :)

I think I'm basically using the simplicity pattern for the frock coat...it looks more like Jacks, however I'll be tweaking it myself where necessary. Which I think will mostly just end up being the cuffs. And maybe taking out a few of the...what are they called again? Godets?? @_@;

Here a good justaucorps pattern but you need to make some adjustement.

The costume of Dustin Hoffman is made in mohair. Dustin Hoffman was allergic to wool.

And here a good picture of the costume (from the first photoshoot (before the filming)).

Originally, the captain Hook had a bowtie like the captain Red (Walther Matthau)in some scenes of the brilliant Pirates of Roman Polanski.

Found a really good pattern by Butterick online for the coat. It's "out of print" so you can only find it online, but it's very nice.

Haha Sorry! I have a pirate coat disorder...I can make one really good and then I'm almost in tears if I have to make another right away. I think I get bored too easy. I just like the decorating part but making the actual pieces drives me nuts.

The biggest problem I'm having right now is finding a dark gray wig... or black/gray mix...once you notice it's not solid black, you just can't do it. >_< Can anyone help me out here???
