Good form!!! A Hook WIP thread...

That looks awesome, although I'm probably a little late to the party.

He looks REALLY young, so my first thought was "Hey, it's Jack dressed as Hook!"

Looks awesome, though. Might want to fake some age.

HAHAHA! Thanks!

Yeah, since I didn't 100% complete the costume overall we really rushed it the night of. I also did mine, my friends and my sister and her friends hair and makeup first which didn't leave any time for my poor boy.

But once the costume is done to a T, we'll be taking it out for a shoot, makeup, eyebrows and all! :D

It's funny you say that about Jack... he actually usually dresses as Jack and though hasn't done so often in the area, a few people still yelled " HEY ITS PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN!!! " at him. :lol

More pics to come as the progress....progresses... ha!

I was actually referring to Jack in the movie Hook, Pan's son. However, now I've got an image of Sparrow dressed as Hook for Halloween to confuse Barbossa.

Glad my comparison worked out regardless! :)

Well, unfortunately I didn't get it 100% done, but it was wearable for Halloween, just without a lot of the details.

The night he went to wear it I had my sister try it on for length and realized one arm was sewn on upside down. Had to take it off and reattach it. When I did that, I twisted the lining so an arm couldn't actually go into the sleeve. Had to take it off and reattach it again. When I did that, I realized the cuff was not also upside down. Had to take it off and reattach it. Ran out of bobbin thread half way. Had to go back and re sew it.

Then had to add more trim to the back of the opposite sleeve and the front of the reversed the right way sleeve.

Slapped it on with some glue and called it a day so that he could wear it in time. 2 costumes ... both incomplete. I feel like a major fail. But at least I have little detailing projects to work on throughout the year now. And let's not kid ourselves, the detailing is the most fun part of making a costume!

Have to hunt for better trim for the hat... definitely need to remake the vest and add the detailing there. Probably will end up making the entire coat over since I don't like the trim I used and would rather find something better. Though in my procrastination, that's all I did was trim-search and never found anything quite good enough. Darn that costuming company for using such an impossible to find trim! >O

And he lost one of the shoe toppers. BOOO! We actually have pictures in one spot of the casino... he had both in one and the next picture it's gone. And no one noticed it left behind! :( BOO. Oh well... that's a tiny thing to make.

Here are some shots of how it came out in its temporary state for one of our Halloween outings. I actually think that even if I complete the detailing on the current coat, that it'd be a massive improvement in the overall look. The trim is definitely still too wide and long down the front but the feel and look is still there... with all the buttons and tassels it would only crank up the snazz factor!

awrsome job!!

thanks!!! it's still a WIP... as a matter of fact, it's back in several pieces scattered about my floor as I type this. XD Aiming to have it OFFICIALLY done by the end of January!

After speaking with Tony Swatton of Sword & Stone, the original blacksmith of Hook's "hook", I inquired about the price of a replica one. He said it be approximately $1,500.. It comes in Stainless steel
He also rents them out.

first run at the shoes... the tongues on this one are just slip ons over the existing ones... i'm thinking of making another set with the red glued to the back of the black leather instead of sewn around the edges. I imagine it'll be a bit cleaner that way since there'll be less separation between the layers to pouf out as they currently are. And a wider ribbon will be added as well...

But anyways, there's an idea of the finished product !

My guess is the Heels are painted correct??

Mr Tallpirate, funny story about that, actually... Travis wanted to commission a Hook from any metalsmith he could find so he was sending an e-mail out and about to a bunch of different websites with a picture of it attached asking for a quote and if it would be possible to make it. He's not quite the researching type, so it was pretty hilarious when he got a reply from Tony saying " Yes I can... I made the original. " Haha! However, upon further discussion, to our understanding, it would be about $1500 in labour + materials which put it a little bit above our budget. ;) At least... until the costume is finished to satisfaction. :D

DarthRH, nope! There was no way a million coats would look smooth and bright enough on black vinyl... they're actually wrapped in red vinyl that's made for car decals. It was so much easier than a trillion coats of paint and is a nice, solid, shiny finish with clean lines! :D

Oooh, this thread is inspiring me to get my butt back in gear and finish the darn thing already!! Problem is, I really don't like the gold trim we chose which was actually an even wider width, I cut about 2mm off the top and bottom of it to thin it out and it's STILL too thick. I have an issue with thinking my detailing work is a lot smaller than it ends up being. =\ But I think it was like $40 for 100yds or something, which was quite good. I recently found a better, incredibly similar trim somewhere out there on the net for vestments but it was almost $25/yd and again, that's just way out of our budget. It sucks being a costumer and trying to save for a house! =\ But oh, the rewards of having my own sewing room will be incomparable. *dreams*

I think I need to get this done just to get the hundreds of gold buttons and tassels that are littering my dressers out of the way. They're the part I'm most excited to do and I have to tear apart and reassemble the whole thing before I get there! D:

bit by bit...

FINALLY finished the sleeves... here's what they look like! Or...one of them anyways. Only all the rest of the detailing to go... o_O

I couldn't believe how much the buttons/tassels and gold around the top of the sleeves and on the shoulders changed it. Before it looks like some Arabian cloak... NOW it's starting to get piratey! :D

Hi I've been a HUGE fan of Hook since i was 3. I seriously could quote the entire movie, but you guys don't want to celebrate my geekness. (Or whatever we have) I was wondering, Trap Joe, if you could tell me how you made your Hook functional. I've been DYING to make a Hook Costume, but lack the materials, insight, money, and skills to make such a complicated piece. The only costumes I have are my Ghostbusters Jumpsuit,(Wrong Color!!!) And My Captain Kirk Uniform Shirt from TOS. Anyone who can send me a tutorial on how to make the Hook or their own ideas would help me greatly.

I worked part-time at an United Artists theater when this movie came out. I would wax my moustache into Hook-style curls. I even made a 'hook' but the Manager refused to let me dress up as Capt. Hook :(
