GLaDOS Core, from the PC Game "Portal"

Hi everyone, this is my first attempt to create, well, anything really. I was inspired by the VolpinProps Daft Punk helmet and stumbled across this community.

This is a GLaDOS Core/eye) from the video game, Portal. To those unfamiliar with it, the climax of the game involves disassembling a malevolent AI one component at a time. This is a replica of one of those components.

Internal LEDs activated, with the lights off.

I still have some finish work to do, but the paint is still drying. The attention to detail amazes me with the rest of your guys' work, that's something I'm trying to focus on for subsequent projects. Thanks for looking!

Absolutely awesome!

Looks to be about 1:1 scale, how big is it roughly? Do you have any progress shots?

A beautiful piece of work! I love the video game inspired builds. Welcome to the community.

I do, i'll upload a few to an imgur album. They should give some perspective as to size. It's about the size of a hamster ball. This is probably because I made it from a hamster ball.

Started with this:

Dremeled out the "door" to acommodate the eyeball and provide in/out access to the LED flashlight on the inside. Dremeled out insertion points to accomodate square steel rods.

Bondo/primer/bondo over everything for depth and to fill in hamster air holes, and so I can carve grooves later. First of a few layers of expanding foam, which will later be drilled into to insert an LED flashlight.

Repurposed tail light glued into the "door", wire added for depth.

Sanded and primed.

Grooves carved into sides, later to be painted. I added some round rod supports to accomodate the rest of the "handles", and square tubing, sawed and bent at angles.

Eye, front view, primed and painted.

Still alive. :D

Brilliant! I never would have guessed it was a hamster ball.

Looks great, I can't wait to see more! :)

Fantastic, I'm constantly amazed of what replicas can be made from - I would of never of guessed that the replica started off as a hamster ball - Bravo sir!!

This was a triumph!

I'm being SO sincere right now. :)

Damn, beat me to it.
Great replica, though. :thumbsup I'd be tempted to have a sound chip or something in there with some of the lines from the game. IIRC each of the 'eye' parts said different things when you picked them up.

Thanks so much for the encouragement, guys. I definitely got lazy with the detailing at the end, though. But for my first fabrication, i'm pretty pleased.

Damn, beat me to it.

We're definitely thinking along the same lines. I really want a motion detector that triggers once it's picked up, and activates the lighting, sounds and even limited motion/vibration. In the game, the red eye is the angry one, and shakes violently while growling as you run across the room to incinerate it.

This was supposed to be a proof of concept for something much more involved, a MAME cabinet installation based off GLaDOs. So rather being a floor-up typical arcade cab, it would be a ceiling suspended monstrosity incorporating a large LCD TV for the display (just like GLaDOS') with the PC and wiring housed within the robot's body.

And what about that song? That was quite unexpected.
