Gizmo from the My science project movie

I remember reading in a magazine, when the movie first came out that the whole thing was custom made. I think the article even told who made it, but I can't remember what magazine it was in, probably Starlog.

I agree with Reaper...that plasma globe isnt any of the weak crap that is available in todays market...they may have been made that way back in the mid 80's but not in 2006.... also the brass parts look like photo etched brass which I cant do. I think that this prop may have found a dead end....I sure would like to see some one be able to make it :D then out of the kindness of there own heart add it to my collection :angel

I had the plasma globe that I purchaces in the late 80's it had a really strong plasma arc I it boxed up and save well at least I thought it was safe. I was planning on building this project, but my wife end up donating it to the Goodwill during one of our moves. I was very annoyed to say the least. I have been looking for a replacement ever since with no luck what so ever.

Hopefully some one will have better luck.

Alan

yea...I wish I could find an older plasma globe myself...I have thought of getting one several times but the one's that are made today bearly even light up

Sci-Fi movie from the 80's? With neon, plasma, or some other similar tube? Chances are a guy named Larry Albright had a hand in it. This guy is out here in LA (Venice) and specializes in all sorts of complicated neon, flourescent, and plasma lighting. He does (or use to) make a lot of the neon that went into movie miniatures. His shop was a really neat place to visit as a PA having to pick stuff up.

Here's the link to his page:

As I noted in Post #19 Larry did indeed work on the film.

Get with the program GK. :p

Thanks for posting his link.

You know that would be the ultimate having one of these made by him.. :)

Wow I love this movie. I saw it at best buy and HAD to buy it. My wife just looked at me like I was crazy.

I sent an email to Ron Cobb to see about oicking his brain on what he remembered of the design and construction. No response so far after 2 weeks.

no reply from Ron Cobb yet. Doubt I will, but ya never know.
I was thinking of maybe try to draw this up in Sketchup using the photomatch part of the program. Anybody here use Sketchup? We could collaborat on the model if you want. Biggest thing is...What size is the plasma ball? 8", 10", custom size?????? Get a scale for that and the rest should be easy.
