Ghostbusters trap for storage

I was hoping to build a trap that would double as a storage box for an item 9in long 3in high and 3in wide but the dimensions I found show the trap doors as just over 6in long.
How much can I stretch the opening to make it work? Make the whole thing larger or just the doors a little longer? Here are the plans i found online.

Had to make it a little longer to hide a phone. It was for my SS gift which is why I could not post more details.
