Genre.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

So anyone want to take a shot at saying what genre Indy 1 falls into?
Is it the same genre as indy 4?

What about the Star Trek TOS , what is that exactly?
I know it's dressed as science fiction, but I tune in to see who Kirk will punch out next.

All of the Indiana Jones films are action/adventure (yes, including the 4th one), just as all Star Treks are science fiction (regardless of your desire to see Kirk get into a fist-fight). Genre is NOT that difficult to understand. A film, or book, is considered genre when it has a preponderance of certain elements. Star Trek is set in the future and deals with space travel and alien cultures, therefore it's science fiction (or speculative fiction as they're shifting over to using).

There are plenty of decent resources on the internet and at your local bookstore to help you develop a stronger understanding of the storytelling elements of both genre and non-genre writing. If you're really interested in learning about them, I recommend you check them out. :)

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

I also love how combining genres with a hyphen is accepted as an answer.

"Firefly is a Sci-Fi-Western."

Um, THAT'S NOT A THING.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

STAR WARS was a Western set in a galaxy far, far away.

See, no hyphen!

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

Much better, thank you.
I've never seen it, so I'll go peruse the Western section at my local blockbuster.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

I just wanted to see that again.

:lol Well, honestly... I can understand wanting some clarification on something obscure or really muddled like Firefly, but this is starting to sound like a kid who doesn't want to read the assigned book for a book report.

Um, THAT'S NOT A THING.

There's a certain sort of person who is always going to want to pigeonhole instead of enjoy. There're always going to be dips hits and there're always going to be juice bags poking at the folks minding their own business.

The folks minding their own business just need to get savvy as to which pokes engender conversation and advancement and intrigue and joy and which pokes are from clowns whose only intent is to aggravate the bees who were previously content to make their own honey.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

No; not really. The "blip identity" is getting off on the swirl of info. You remember the kids in grade school who would whang at hornet's nests just to see the commotion? Same thing.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

Not seen it.
Would like to.
Can you sum up the story in one line and I will have a go at calling it.

It's just so ironic that the guy who was trying to analyze Raiders is the one guy who hasn't seen The Searchers (Spielberg aficionados will understand why).
