Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

I'll never pigeonhole cinema. For me, it's either good or bad storytelling.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

Genre
–noun
1. A class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique, or the like: the genre of epic poetry; the genre of symphonic music.

Which is subjective so yes, it exists. It is not however definitive so I'm with CTF.

If you try to pigeonhole any film you'll end up with thousands of threads in here that will simply leave you more confused than when you began.

The essence of film is story. Get that right and the rest should hopefully fall into place.

You just said way more than you realize. :lol

Yeah, there's no mysterious rule that says films of a certain genre have to be exactly alike, or that there's no bleed over into other genres.

Genre is generally reinforced by bad filmmakers - go into the video store and look at the cheesy horror movies, or the shark/squid attack movies.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

Seems to me there has to be some kind of classification but it's not meant to be definitive to a microscopic level. You can be just as pretentious about avoiding classification as you can be in trying to classify everything, y'know?

When I surf Netflix, I like to be able to generally locate "science fiction" without having to sort through "horror" or "romantic comedy." Seriously... do you want to have to browse Netflix alphabetically? That's great if you know exactly what you're looking for but if you're BROWSING, then general categories do have a use.

The psuedo-intellectual arguments about "that's not really 'science fiction' because of blah, blah, blah' always strike me as the epitome of pretentiousness.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

Of course there is such a thing as a genre film. Grindhouse is a glaring example. Of course it is only a genre film because that was it's intent, but it shows that they exist and that the genre concept is a genre of it's own. As far as categorizing all films in this way, it's pretty pointless and would vary depending on who you ask, imho.

Actually, that was intentional... ;)

"A long time ago in a galaxy fay away".

a long time ago, aka once upon a time, (fairytale) in a galaxy far away (science fiction)

A New Hope is fantasy-science fiction.

*Ahem* STAR WARS. What about action? What about adventure? What about drama? Heck there are some jokes in there so what about comedy?

Move on to ESB and throw in romance as well. Get what I'm saying?

Star Wars is a good (albeit simple) STORY.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

What genre does your favourite movie fall into?

I don't have a single favorite film.

Is there even such a thing as genre?

Yes. Definitely.

Do you rush to a particular genre section in the DVD store, to see what ‘s new?

Not really, no. I also don't go to video/DVD stores anymore.

Do you (like me) want a bit of the comedy genre included with every story?

Definitely NOT.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

Genre is an evolving concept. Just look at what "comedy" has come to mean versus its classic designation. "Horror" is another great modern example. What once was firmly of the "Horror" genre might be placed elsewhere through modern eyes.

There's nothing finite about it, being something that is placed on a work rather than being of its essence. Nothing more than a designation to help place something on a shelf.

So many of the best works defy their own genre, or live on the cusp of multiple genres, it makes the designation arguable at best, useless at worst.

Star Wars is part of a sub-genre called "Space Opera". There are literally dozens and dozens of sub-genres to cover the hybridizations that you're referring to.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

Okay, try fitting The Wicker Man into one genre.

Re: Genre, is there any such thing, really?

My teacher from my "American Film Genres" class last semester would say yes, they do exist. Classifying movies into genres has become more complex in recent years, though. They used to make movies to fit into certain genres and now they make them to break out of the genre restrictions.

The Wicker Man very easily fits into the genre of "Nicholas Cage". These films are often viewed by people entertained by the particular brand of insanity portrayed by the actor Nicholas Cage.

Wicker Man fail.

The Wicker Man is a MusicalCrimeHorrorComedyThriller.

I am not talking about the Nicholas Cage version.
