General Doctor Whoniverse Discussion

So the rumor now is that the 50th special will be 3D? I sort of hate that as 3D on TV never works. Unless you have a 3D TV, but I doubt it would be broadcast in that format, rather just the stupid red and blue lense thing!

It's also going to be shown in theaters. Not sure if it'll only be in the UK or not. With my luck it'll be LA & New York only.:cry

Really? :unsure

I'll keep an open mind but DW doesn't need to get more gimmicky...

Completely agree. It really seems to me that some of these gimmicks are never for the benefit or enhancement of the show, but simply to make an announcement to keep the brand in the news.

My personal opinion is that as the brand name expands & we have more companies with their hands in the pot, the BBC feel obligated to keep the name in headlines to show how relevant the show is. I'm only 41 & grew up with the PBS showings, so I have no point of reference as to how the show was treated when it was originally on the air.

Who is one of the few things that I love that I haven't been disgusted when it began to be "trendy". I think it will either continue to grow & the name-droppers will lose interest & move on...or...it will start to be seen as a merchandising cash-cow & eventually implode. Either way, I believe I'll still be there, ready for it to be rebooted in 20 years.:thumbsup

Just had to ruin it by bringing her up didn't you. :lol

Well she is supposed to be a female version of Indy...:behave

I am okay with her character... But I will definitely be ok when they finally get to The Doctor's last date with River...:thumbsup

Plus we might get to see that awesome sonic screwdriver from Silence in the Library again.:love

So, just reading news on the 'big 50' event. A 60 minute 3D episode. I'm sorry, but WHAT?

You skipped an entire FREAKING season for a 60 minute special?

Season 7 was cut in half. This March should have been Season 8, not season 7b! So I figured the reason why it had been cut in half was so that the 13 episode BUDGET for the 8th season could be used to make a few really awesome episodes for for the 50th. For some reason I figured they would take the 13 eps busget and turn it into 6 or so anniversary episodes, having past Doctor's etc. Make a good arc and we would all be happy.

But really? A 60 minute episode? What in the world can you do in 60 minutes (With past Doctor's none the less) that would be awesome?

The story would have to move along so fast that to use all 11 Doctors, they would only get 5 minutes of air time each!

So what is the story going to be. The Doctor has Osborn stand in the console room and then calls each incarnation one at a time to shake her hand?

Even the Gatiss special is 90 minutes!

So, we're getting the last 8 episodes of season 7. The BIG 50th 3D gala event, then a christmas special!

Oh Moffat has hinted at 'all kinds of Doctor Who' for the 50th. Which will probably mean a series of six 45 second mini episodes on the website.

I just feel that the special will be less than special. And not all of us have 3D tv's, so I'm guessing it will be the red and blue lense 3D glasses needed to watch this with, which is pretty much crap as it never works right!

My excitement just dropped to frustration.

I REALLY hope that I come back here and eat crow later!

(1) Your expectations were too high. Nobody from the BBC ever said the special episode would contain all the Doctors - Fans alone fueled that expectation. I thought it unlikely from the beginning (at most three Doctors IF there were even more than one).

(2) From an episode standpoint, yes all we get is the single episode, but we also get two documentary specials (at least one of which will contain multiple doctors).

(3) 3D needs to be taken off life support. Seriously. Maybe they keep it as a gimmick in the theater, but stop trying to push it elsewhere. Thankfully the PC industry has stopped making any kind of "3D" effort.
