General Doctor Whoniverse Discussion

I've been happy with what we've been given thus far and trust that there is a great plan in place for the new companion and the new series.

I also hope she's not contemporary, that's been played to death and its no longer interesting.

Meh.

Anyone else remember when the Doctor's companions weren't the center of the universe, in the case of Amy's legs, or the most important woman in the universe, in the case of Donna, or were someone the Doctor would break fundamental laws of Gallifrey for, in the case of Rose?

I miss having just a regular person as a companion. That was the appeal of the companions, they were just regular folks the Doctor ended up picking up and going on a whirlwind of adventures, seeing things no one else could ever possibly see.

I'm just approaching the end of the troughton era and I see what you mean. So far, in the originals, the companions were always multiples and were more friends between themselves and the Doctor was the on in charge and everyone regarded him that way.

In the new series, It started that way with eccelstone and started skewing at the end of his run and has been heading the complete other way until Amy/Rory. Their all friends or one has a crush on the doctor or the other way around. I don't see any of that with Amy/Rory, but you have to admit, she's a strong presence. The difference presently is they have Smith as 'one of the group' and not 'the one in charge' for lack of a better term. I see what people say about it become the Amy Pond show, though. Still, the end of last season gives me hope that they'll head in the opposite way from here on out.

I totally agree. Long gone is the day that companions were just normal. Even when they came from alien planets they were more normal than the recent companions.
It would be better for the new companion to be from either the past or the future not the present.

A thought I have had:
Since the 50th anniversary is coming up, why doesn't the BBC start re-showing classic Who? I don't have any of the DVDs and I'd love to be able to watch stories I only vaguely recall.
It would be a great opportunity to highlight the longevity of the show, especially if they're planing on brining in some past Doctors for a big event (fingers crossed)

I'm in the midst of watching all the old stuff now. Just about finished with Troughton. That said, you can find a lot of the old stuff on youtube.

Even if they do run some old stuff on the BBC, there's not guarantee they'd run it here - though I know some people would find a way. There's people who can't wait the 6-7 hour delay on new episodes when they're on the same day in the UK and USA and just get if off the web before it airs here :)

"here" for me is the UK. I guess not listing my location is kinda confusing?
I', gonna have to find some way of watching past Doctors. Ages ago a national newspaper gave away free DVDs of single eppisodes of several Doctors, I'd watched the Hartnel, Troughton and Pertwee ones, but only recently realised I hadn't watched Davidson's "Earthshock". I was right back three as a kid again (#5 was my first Doctor) and I was suddenly remembering how the Cybermen used to terrify me way more than the Daleks did.

Being on troughton at the moment, i've seen lots of cybermen - and an evolution of cybermen at that. Haven't seen the daleks for a while now, but I know they'll be back. Right now they're still in silver colored wet suits :)

Too corny.

given the all powerful new sonic screw driver, they've pulled a star trek and went all drama.

years ago, Michael Okuda was on a call in program on NPR and I dialed in wanting to know why all the aliens just had bumpy heads, rather than the thought provoking and hard sci fi based aliens like the horta when the caller in front of me asked the same question. Michael's response was that it was just easier to write stories for aliens that looked like people. And there you go...

of course, they went over to me and I was all "uhhhhhhhhhhhh... a foot ball, what's a football?"

:facepalm

it beaks my heart, but i'm over DW. there's a 12 year old boy in me that's just happy to still be with the old stuff on VHS.

I think these days, they're trying to please everyone. Eye candy for the lads, drama for the girls.. some smoke and mirrors, some gun play, sonic zapping...

I know the Doctor's real name - maybe.

While watching old eps, I found this bit of info.

In the story 'The Armageddon Factor' part 4, the Doctor runs into another Time-Lord who goes by the name of Drax. He recognises the Doctor from the graduating class of '91 (if I recall correctly) and calls him Feeta Sigma - or Fee for short.

I assume that in his very strong dialect, he is actually saying 'Theta Sigma'

I haven't heard of any discussion relating to this and would be interested to hear opinions.

It could be a case of mistaken identity (which would be quite a stretch IMO) or that it's more of a designation than a 'true' name.

Thoughts?

If I remember correctly, that's a nickname he had in the classic series. Can't remember the specifics, but it's not his real name. I thought the same thing though when I first saw that episode.

Yeah, just read that in the Tardis wiki. Should have looked there first.

Poo. :)
