General Doctor Whoniverse Discussion

I think it also helps that they've announced when they're announcing, rather than trying to keep it secret right up until the Xmas Special regeneration.

Well, considering the BBC just posted a story which includes Peter Capaldi as one possible contender I guess it won't be him.

Drat.

He seems to apparently get younger with each regeneration, so it won't be long before we'll have a thirteen year old Doctor running around.

Yeah, although the younger Doctor seems to draw the younger 'target audience' I miss the authority and wisdom of an older actor, let's see Who we get, pun very much intended, there'll be threads all over the internet slagging them off within 21 hours, sigh..

They've not missed in 11 doctor's to this point. I'd say they've earned the benefit of the doubt.

Technically Moffat is 1 for 1, which is the same odds but a much smaller sample size, prone to inaccuracy. I think the next guy will be good though, or at least not terrible.

I always find myself a little anxious at the annoucment of a new doctor, but Peter Capaldi seems like the perfect choice.

As much as I've enjoyed David and Matt, there's just been so much zaniness in the doctor these last few seasons... and adding Clara in upped the zaniness by about a thousand percent. Personally, I would've liked to have seen it go to Chiwetel Ejiofor (the Operative from Serenity) and for them to have him be more serious/intense.

For me, although Capaldi is a good actor, I feel like going with him (bringing in another older white man) doesn't do much to advance the character.

I agree with the zaniness. I also would like a bit more serious approach.

In my opinion it doesn't matter if the actor who portrays the Doctor is young, old, white, black, man or woman it's the writing that will advance the character and that has been lacking in quality at times the past couple series. The cast has been great it's the approach that needs tweaking. Tell us the freaking Doctors name, unlock Gallifrey, stop with the repetitive "this companion is special" BS and just get back to telling good stories.

He was in World War Z. When I was watching World War Z I spotted the W.H.O. institute and just figured it was a Doctor Who reference because they were in Britain. Never did I realize it would have anything to do with the next incarnation of The Doctor.

He has appeared in both Doctor Who and Torchwood before, although there is some precedence for this when Colin Baker starred as a Gallifreyan guard during Peter Davison's run as The Doctor.

Hopefully the older doctor will be more geared towards the Pertwee and or Baker era and deliver a higher volume of good stories and be less inclined to attract young teenage girls.

I was at a Yo Yo Ma concert when the news broke today!

I am pretty psyched. The cynic in me thought we'd have 20-somethings forever.

For me, I'd like a little more weight to the character. Matt Smith was more than capable of weight, but the stories played him light and fluffy most of the time. The Doctor is nearing the end of his regenerative cycle (yes, we all know he's going beyond 13 - but HE doesn't) so that's got to weigh on him a bit.

Anyway, this is the best news possible as far as I'm concerned. I think it's a great direction for the show.

Here's a letter Capaldi wrote to Who when he was 15.
