General Doctor Whoniverse Discussion

I would've liked to have seen it go to Chiwetel Ejiofor (the Operative from Serenity) and for them to have him be more serious/intense.
That would be a pretty interesting take on the Doctor. I'd sure as hell watch it, I love Chiwetel in pretty much everything I've seen him in.

Well, at least I was wrong about them picking a younger actor. I'm completely unfamiliar with this actor, so I'm taking a "wait and see" approach.

Do we know when the regeneration is supposed to occur? Christmas Special, or during the 50th anniversary show? Or first episode next series?

If they do bring River back, i'm far more interested in seeing her flirting with Twelve.

Also, let the costume speculation begin!

Don't forget this guy played the civil servant on "Torchwood: Children of Earth" who killed his own family rather than turn them over to the aliens, and also the father in "Fires of Pompeii" They couldn't have picked a better guy to bring back the gravitas to the character, I just hope the WRITING improves too.

Yeah, i don't think the writing's been bad, necessarily, just that it's lacked a certain weight to it, except in certain scenes. And the season thru-line arc thingy has been weak this past season. Clara as the Impossible Girl was...I dunno...just kinda weird. Also, the whole "name of the Doctor" thing...yeah, that was stupid. Don't bother teasing me with something you'll never reveal anyway. It's not a tease, it's just being annoying.

Anyway, assuming they can write him well, I think he'll absolutely be able to bring it. I fully expect comic and light moments, but I'd like to see them get back to the vibe they had with the Ninth Doctor, actually. I always though that Chris Eccleston played the part brilliantly with this surface level "Oh, look at me, I'm a fun, funny man with a blue box" quality, but would regularly show the guilt and pain he carried with him from the Time War. I'm hoping the Christmas Special will deal with that to a degree, maybe introduce some graver threat, and we'll get a few good years out of Capaldi.

That said, while I'm delighted to see them go with a middle-aged actor instead of a twenty-something, I wouldn't count on him sticking around for much more than, oh, four or five years. Maybe even less. 13 will be upon us sooner than we think.

For me the only downside is this past season is the first one I've loved Matt Smith's Doctor. Before that I've loved Matt's portrayal but I've been uncomfortable with the incarnation's preference of playing the fool over saving lives. Often he's pretended incompetence seemingly for his own amusement instead of as strategy and people have died for it. It's been an element in many of the previous incarnations but, in my view, this is the first time it seems to have been badly employed by the Doctor. Conversely watching this incarnation claw himself up from the pits of blue despair to a new challenge and finding joy again during this most recent season has been some of the best for me of the re-launched series. Doctor Who has always been a prime example of WCPE (We Can't Please Everyone) and many people have groused about this recent season but name a single season that people haven't. ;)

...and still not ginger.

He was in World War Z. When I was watching World War Z I spotted the W.H.O. institute and just figured it was a Doctor Who reference because they were in Britain. Never did I realize it would have anything to do with the next incarnation of The Doctor. QUOTE]

What a strange coincidence that he played a W.H.O. Doctor in World War Z! Love it!

Wow, Capaldi is Full Geek. In addition to the age 15 letter previously posted, here's another one from 1976. You might have to zoom it. He's writing about the new Time Tunnel intro!

I missed the announcement because I was at Legoland. The fact that Capaldi is a long-time fan (like Tennant) alleviates some of my misgivings, so I guess I'll re-watch the Pompeii episode and give him a chance. I think my enjoyment of previous Doctors was helped by the fact that I hadn't seen Casanova (Tennant's most prominent pre-who role) or even heard of Matt Smith.
Has anyone asked him if he'll be using his natural accent (like Eccleston and McCoy) or trying a different one (like Tennant)?

I couldn't be more pleased with the casting choice, though I totally agree with Kerr that the writing needs to step it up a notch, I just can't see Peter Capaldi flying around saying 'I wear a panama now, panama's are cool' and I for one would be happy to hear him use his natural accent, my fingers are well and truly crossed that he won't disappear after just one season.

Lord, but the wailing from the fangirls... 12th Doctor Butthurt

I *love* the choice. Like many of you, I've wanted an older actor for the new incarnation. More in the Baker era mold. I mean, I've loved Matt and David, but the pacing of the stories was so fast I felt like I'd run a mile after each show. Hopefully we can get to a more thoughtful pace.

One thing that honestly caught me by surprise was the amount of angst by those who wanted to see a black/woman/transgender doctor just for the sake of diversity. Like some of you, I think Chewitel would make a good choice. Same with Idris Elba or Joanna Lumley, but not simply because they're not white males. They're terrific actors. Ironically, those most pushing for a "PoC" were some of the most lily white examples of humanity I've ever clapped eyes on.

It,s sadly come to the point in this society that, you are made to feel guilty for being a white male.

I love how the people wailing about Moffat being homophobic (the most asinine word in the English language, btw), never consider that he created the first, as far as I know, openly bisexual character in the series.

With all the ranting & raving going on, I wanted to start all sorts of social media sites demanding that Moffat cast a non-Brit to prove once & for all that he's not a 'nationalist.

...love Capaldi, btw. I'm a fan OF THE SHOW, & can't wait til Christmas. :thumbsup

Honestly I think it would have been hilarious in a totally unintentional way if the Doctor regenerated into a black man or any color woman at this point, after fifty years and eleven actors. How about they just unlock Gallifrey and introduce some black Timelords and more women Timelords (Timeladies)?

The uproar over a nonexistent slight just goes to show how far political correctness has gone in the wrong direction and the infatuation with younger more sexy Doctors just goes to show many people are watching for the wrong reasons. You want sexy go somewhere else.
