General Doctor Who Props Discussion Thread

Re: General Doctor Who Props Discussion Thread, Discuss ANY DW Props Made by ANYONE!!

Not really. I explained how I made the Shark eaten one on that thread about...30 seconds ago, cuz you asked. lols.

The Burnt out Tennant one is actually more based off of the Eleventh Hour sonic than it was the Smith and Jones Sonic (The smith and jones sonic blew up whilst not extended, and the emitter actually melted and fused into the body of the sonic. Where as the Eleventh hour blew up in multiple places. Am I showing my Geek yet? lols. ) I made that one out of a C/O Tennant, and then with a mixture of Paint, Cuticle scissors, hot glue, epoxy, and a willingness to actually light it on fire, ended up with a fairly close prop. Here's a closer picture of it.

Wowsers - some nice stuff here!

Must get to showing my unimpressive assortment of bits :p

As long as you're not trying to show us your naughty bits, Davey. ;)

@dano

Those Cybermen helmets are amazing!!!!
Top notch work.

Are the two sitting next to each other the version that was used in "The Five Doctors"?

My current labour of love:

It's cast from the original dummy helmet that Toberman throws across the room, I'm hoping this will finally be finished at the end of this year as I seem to have been at it for about 5 years now!

Some other bits I have made over the years..

Does this count?

DNDalek_Old_New.jpg

Built around 2001/2002, originally painted ala 'Remembrance' but I got bored of that (and white got dirty quickly!) so went for a Supreme 'Planet of the Daleks' Council!

The dalek has since been sold on and revamped by someone else. But this one was my labour of love for a good number of years.

More WHO to follow...

Re: General Doctor Who Props Discussion Thread, Discuss ANY DW Props Made by ANYONE!!

Hey guys, just wanted to pop in and give props to all the Who stuff in this thread, I'm turning a little green with every new picture I see

Im stopping in for a little advice, I've been trying to mod my 11th doctor sonic screwdrivers, I've got a C/O one, and the actual working screwdriver one (sans the ability to open its claws :[ )

my first thought was just to repaint them because that seemed like the logical thing to do, and it turned out pretty well... at first.

Mmm just look at the nice glossy shimmery goodness!

Except not.

the second you touch it? it fades away and becomes this nasty matte crayola copper color :(

SO then I though... Gloss/enamel/clear coat! yay!

Wrong again.

I used an automotive clear coat so that It could continuously be handled without losing the shine, at least that's what Jams at Home Depot thought would work and here's the result...

It's almost EXACTLY the same color it was when it came out of the box!!

I've done alot of painting before but never had to recreate a polished metal look, mostly just grungy beaten replications.

does anyone know of a way to preserve that pristine shine?

I'd be ever so grateful for some pointers or anything close to it.

Re: General Doctor Who Props Discussion Thread, Discuss ANY DW Props Made by ANYONE!!

Unfortunateley, there isn't a clear coat out there that will preserve a decent metallic coat, or if there is, I'm not aware of it :unsure

I would say that the best bet for the 11th Doc sonic is to use copper rub n buff, there some good tutorials on here on how to use it effectiveley if you search rub n buff.

Re: General Doctor Who Props Discussion Thread, Discuss ANY DW Props Made by ANYONE!!

Have you considered something like a very thin copper sheet? Something like that gold leaf stuff that can be applied to darn near anything. I can't think of the proper name...

Hmmm I'd never considered it, as I hadnt a clue that it was an option :)

Re: General Doctor Who Props Discussion Thread, Discuss ANY DW Props Made by ANYONE!!

I wonder if there's something along the lines of shrink wrap that emulates copper?

Re: General Doctor Who Props Discussion Thread, Discuss ANY DW Props Made by ANYONE!!

Are all of those parts copper or are they brass on the real one? I was thinking that the machined parts were aged brass and the slots in between the aluminum slider were copper tube cut up (but I have not studied that one much).

Someone upgraded a River Sonic toy in one of these threads that looked pretty convincing.

Ah here is the stuff he used.

Re: General Doctor Who Props Discussion Thread, Discuss ANY DW Props Made by ANYONE!!

hi there,

its a little OT, sorry if i crush the party.

someone requested me to made a custom plaque for DW sonic screwdriver and he ask me to design it for him... considering that i never watch an episode of doctor who (its not aired where i am) i have completely no idea where to start?

i managed to get the fonts for the main title and whip up a vector art of the DW.. but i am stuck.. is there some essential "thing" that i could include in to spice it up?

thanks!

gallifreyan symbols will ALWAYS be a welcome part of my displays. Theyre intricate and mystic, even on Non-Who pieces, I'd enjoy them.

MANY thanks to you for suggesting the Leafing approach, the finishes are pretty delicious. :)

The pictures dont really do much justice, they shine pretty well and the feel is pretty cold, I like them alot.

The C/O screwdriver I took all the way apart and got into it pretty well with the Leaf, and then the Screwdriverx2 was just an application to the top since it really only comes in two pieces... but some clever masking did the trick!

my next steps for both is the additional leather for the grips, and then on the C/O Sonic, I'll be looking for a translucent white glaze to give the appearance of Jade on the emitter.
