Game of Thrones

I havent heard an official date, but I think its supposed to be pretty close to the season premiere, so March 31st. My local liquor store expects to sell out pretty quickly based on demand, so I prepaid for a couple bottles.

That's probably not a bad idea. I should see if I can pre-buy a case or something.

I'm seeing a lot of people saying they haven't read any of the books but really enjoy the series. This series is amazing and it isn't necessarily required to read any of the books to get wrapped so tightly around Martin's characters and their environments. That's what defines an exceptional film or series, one where the viewer constantly finds themselves drifting away from reality and for a short time, really believing they are right there where allt he action is taking place in George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones"

I first started reading the books about a few years out from the announcement of a tv series. I was dumbfounded I couldn't believe what I was hearing when I discovered this amazing novel series was being promoted to a show. Finally I would be able to grasp the true environments I was reading about. I'd be able to witness my favorite character in action as he wonders around Westeros and it's surrounding lands. Jon Snow the ******* of Eddard Stark! Something I realized all too soon though, and I will agree with most on this subject and thread.. don't get too attached to a certain character, because in a single episode or with a turn of a page that person could be forever cut out of this storyline. :cry It's happened many times before to me and the funny thing is Martin knows about it, he too has stated he gets attached to certain characters and then a new thought pops into his head and that person meets an untimely fate as is gone forever.

I refuse to release any spoilers as I've read all the way up to the last book currently in circulation, but if you haven't already PICK UP THE BOOKS AND READ THEM, lol. My inlaws had never read the series but as soon as they knew I did and they watched season 1 they made the effort and countless times I've been told they don't regret the decision. George Martin is a brilliant man, now if only he could get the last books out before something happens to him. That's one thing I hate the most is when an amazing author leaves all of us dedicated fans hanging on the edge of our seats wondering what next adventure takes place in this amazing series... but at the same time I LOVE it!!

So I know I'm not the only one, I have a few predictions in this show, theories really that fellow fans and I have talked about or I have picked up off fanboards about this show. The characters the lives they were meant to lead, the secrets... Let's get em rolling!! :p

Minor point, but Iron Throne will be available in stores today. Or at least in my local store. I'll be picking up six of 'em.

I'll have to try Ommegang's Game of Thrones line of brews, I actually tried a stout last week from New Holland Brewing Company called "Dragon's Milk" it was amazing!!

I enjoy the series immensely- and having read the books back to back over a 2 month period- I can honestly say the changes made do not detract from the story at all- so far.

Indeed, the pacing is greatly improved with the little nips and tucks the production team have made.

And echoing the many comments above- read the books!

I agree the changes that they do make to the HBO series are very minimal but there is so much content in the novels. That's one thing that i greatly appreciate in a novel to film. The ability to keep it all straight forward, everything you see on the series happened in the book, there's hardly any scene cutting and when there is they put everything together so well that for those of us that read the books hardly notice it sometimes. Peter Jackson cut out alot of the storyline Lord of The Rings. George Martin stuck to the plot and still manages to keep us on the edge of our seats :)

I've read up through book four (I've been holding off on book five because it's a bit pricey at $14.99 for the ebook version. I was given to understand that the major publishers were supposed to drop their prices to $9.99 max for ebooks, per the court ruling and I've been waiting for the price to actually go down on it.) and I absolutely love them.

My husband and my best friend have also tried, but haven't been able to get into them. Hubby couldn't get past Martin's writing style which can be a bit on the verbose side and my friend didn't make it past book 2 because she wanted something "less rapey", which is fair enough.

My husband, however, LOVES the show and enjoys discussing the books with me, especially hearing how events in the book differ from the show.

Martin's style is verbose? Someone's never read Dickens... ;)

Although, I'll grant you, within the genre he's one of the more verbose authors I've read. Then again, I haven't tried reading Robert Jordan...

Ugh, Jordan.... Compared with Patrick Rothfuss, Martin is pretty streamlined in his writing style, though I do love me some Kvothe! :)

I found books 1-3 highly entertaining, but 4-5 more of a slog.

Yeah I found that with a few books in the series the first few had me going and the fourth was alright, but you start to develop favoritism to certain characters and disgust to others. Id get to a certain character I loved hearing about and then Martin would put them in immediate danger and often times I found myself flipping ahead into the book to make sure they had another chapter and that they were still alive... I'll say it again the man knows how to keep people on the edge of their seats!! Dancing with Dragons is by far the most exciting book I've read thoroughly in the series. Can't wait for the other two to be finished

I haven't read 5 yet but I did enjoy 4 but not at first, I didn't appreciate and enjoy book 4 until I read it a second time through after re-reading 1 - 3. The hardest thing to get into in book 4 is the way that it starts, instead of picking up with familiar locales and events from book 3 it starts out in a new locale with new characters that we have no idea on how they fit into the greater scheme of things. However, I found that after reading it a second time through I found the new characters more interesting and wondering how they'll fit into the greater scheme of things.

Thanks for the non-spoiler-y heads-up on that, Riceball. I've been holding off reading Book 4 and Book 5, myself.

My basic plan, originally, was to read one book per year, during the summer before that book's upcoming season. And then they decided to split Book 3 into 2 seasons, and that screwed my plan. Plus I found out that Book 4 and Book 5 are contemporaneous (roughly), so it'd be difficult to follow that plan even if Season 4 WAS going to be book 4 (which it isn't -- now it's "Book 3.5").

All of THIS was so that I wouldn't burn through all the books and then spend a gajillion years waiting while Martin writes Book 6 and 7. I was hoping the series would "catch up" with him and that would be his impetus to freaking WRITE FASTER. :)

At the moment, though, having finished Book 3 over the summer, I'm perfectly happy taking a breather for a year or two, simply given the momentous stuff that happens in Book 3.

Book 3 is a good break since book 4 is a lot slower and nothing major happens in book 4 and from what I've read, the same goes for book 5. Some people decry them as essentially treading water but I like to think of them more as set up for things to come in books 6 & 7 although, honestly, after what happens in the first 3 books I'm not sure how much more can be added to what is already a pretty complex and, at times, convoluted plot.

Any luck? My local stores here in L.A. arent getting any until the 26th and in very limited supply. The local BevMo is only getting 2 cases and they're not even putting it out. They're just going to save it for whoever asks for it and limit purchases.
