Game of Thrones Dragon Eggs. Casting in Concrete!

Game of Thrones Dragon Eggs.

There is something about this set of props that seems to call to us here on the RPF. There are a lot of builds, and a few different approaches so I thought I'd add mine to the mix.

The construction isn't drastically different from other builds, but I've got a couple of interesting, slightly different mediums I'm going to cast the eggs in, once the mould is ready.

On to some pics...

I started with a suitably sized plastic egg, sealed it up, then started sculpting with Sculpey.

I then cut a template for the shape of the scales. This was a single template, which helped to regulate the shape, but the sizes still vary a little as they seem to on the originals.

Finished layering on the scales

Here's a shot of the texture of the sculpted scales. At this stage, it looks far too "sculpted" It needs much more definition, and some texture.

To achieve this, I needed to bake the sculpey. So in to the oven the egg went, just for about 15mins or so, as it was very thin. Once it was cooked, I could work into the texture and edges, to make it look more like "stone". In the centre of this pic, you can see where I've started to alter the surface texture

Here it is, now that the whole egg has been textured and "aged". Tt's difficult to tell in this pic, but there is much more going on on the surface, much more interesting.

Then I coated the whole egg in a thin layer of wax, to fill in some of the scales edges, and to give a centuries old "polish" to the surface. As if these have been handled and wrapped up by hundreds of traders and smugglers over their long years.

Ready for the mould now, here's another shot of the waxed surface, nice and close.

Well, thats the progress so far. The mould is underway now, and I can't wait to start testing out some exciting materials!

Thanks for looking everyone, and sorry that this is such a mammoth post!

Great build Pete! Look forward to seeing the finished piece(s)... :thumbsup

Thanks Mark! I've eventually managed to get started on the mould today, to hope to get some casts in the next few days. Cheers.

Here's the egg, sitting with it's seam fence in place, ready for the layers of rubber and glass.

The seam line may look a little odd and crooked. That is because I have followed the edges of the scales with the seam. This is to (hopefully) hide the seam better in the casts, or at least, minimise the clean up.

And here's the first half of the silicon stage of the mould done. It's currently curing under it's fibreglass jacket, I hope to get on the the second half this afternoon.

Re: "From the Shadow Lands, beyond Asshai" Game of Thrones Dragon Eggs. Casting Concr

Mould is now finished, and I've got a test cast pulled from it. In the show and books, the eggs have been petrified or fossilised. As Master Illyrio states, "The ages have turned them to stone, but they will always be beautiful."

I wanted my eggs to be as close to stone as I could make them. So here I am, learning how to cast concrete!

Not the final product by any means, this is just a test casting, to see how the mould performs. This is a mix of cement and cab-o-sil, used as a substitute for a conventional aggregate. I am however going to try some more castings using a 1:1 mix of cement to fine sand to try and stabilise the cast a bit more. This one is a little dusty and has taken a long time to harden up (almost 4 days). I think a more conventional mix will give me cleaner results.

Here's a pic of the first quick cast anyway. It does have a GORGEOUS weight to it!

I've got a bit more progress to show on these...

I've made a second concrete cast, this time adding some soft sand, and a fairly substantial amount of PVA into the cement mix.

This cast seems much more stable, but I still opened the mould a bit too soon, so one half of this egg is a little less defined than the other. It seems these need a good 5-6 days in the mould to really stabilise and dry out enough before de-moulding.

Here's a shot of the cast on a set of scales, reading over 5.7 Lbs!

Even though this cast isn't perfect, it's still good enough to try some paints tests on. Here are a few shots of the first test. Two different acrylic washes, and some wax leaves the cast looking like this

I think it probably needs a little more yellow for the final pass...

I've also made a hollow resin slush cast, and back filled it with sand to see if I get a better result, we'll see how that turns out.

Very cool. That would be a nice mantle piece. I like how you are trying out some different and unusual techniques.

Looks awesome!

Thanks!

Cheers, it's always fun and (frustrating!) experimenting with materials that are not necessarily designed for the purpose your using them for. I've got another, totally different, casting medium I'd like to try out in the next few days.

What a great project! Are you planning on displaying them in an old chest also?
Thanks so much for posting your progression. Wonderful!

Thank you! My current plan is to make a stand/cradle for each egg, so they can stand upright safely, then use them as bookends. If I ever get a chance, I would like to make a chest too though!

You could have them as garden decoratons as well...A dragon nest overgrown with vines and 3 eggs laying inside.

Yep, I have the first test cast sitting in the garden right now, to see how well it'll hold up to some weather.

Here are are few shots of the resin cast, filled with sand. The cream egg is the concrete one, the green one is resin. Again, just acrylics and some wax.
