Furiosa's steering wheel (Fury Road) - References and tinkering

I've looked everywhere and all I've been able to come up with is the same angled shot. Everyone seems to be working off of that one picture and the result always seems off. I know there are a few scenes where it's more or less a straight-on view but nobody has captured them I guess. I know it's not Star Wars, but that's quite surprising.

If anyone knows of one or could take one I know it would help others if you posted it.

I've never screencaped before but I'm willing to give it a shot (it's easy right? :p). If you give me the rough times if you know them of the shots your looking for I'll give it a try :)

Re: Furiosa's steering wheel (Fury Road) - No screen shot exists??

Oh man... I caught it on TV a few weeks ago and totally should've saved it on the DVR. I think there's a shot right at the end where a steering wheel flies straight at the camera and I think it's hers. That's the one I was picturing, so I hope that's it. Otherwise it's going to be tough to remember an exact enough time. It would probably be near the beginning when they're all gearing up for the convoy.

I know I should just buy it, but I usually don't buy grown-up movies these days because I know I'll never watch it so it's a waste. If I somehow have the time to myself I should be doing something constructive. :)

If you own the blu-ray, go to the extras. You will find some really clear shots of it along with the Nux bobble head bird prop.

The wheel that flies out to camera at the end of the film is not hers. Her wheel is ripped out of the truck before they hit the swamps.

Aw man, that's what I get for looking away for a second.

Well, now I'm getting almost curious enough to buy it.

I really appreciate that. While I was hoping there was a good shot showing the shape of the skull straight on, that does help with the side profile which was lacking in those two shots (practically the same shot) floating around. I'm also now confident that the teeth are pretty much symmetrical as I thought, something that I haven't seen done in replicas. Not that I blame them if a straight shot doesn't really exist. You really have to look hard and not let perspective fool you.

Boy, whoever made the original is an artist. It looks simple at a glance but then you see all the really complex shapes and the way the wire is bent to give even more depth to the surface. You'd almost be better off using one of those 3D printing pens. If you had a steady hand. Hairy stuff!

Then I thought of spaghetti, which would be great if it wasn't ultimately fragile. But that led me to the thought of using 3D printer filament and just running it through hot water or a heat gun to soften it just enough to bend and then hold its shape. Anyone ever do something like that?

There is a website someplace, I cannot remember right of the guy that did all of them, I saw a picture of all the hero wheels in a crate being shipped to the filming location. They build like three of each.
I screen capped the crap out a few things in the movie.

you can tell the one in Max's had is a dummy the rear on most all the FR wheel have a quick release hub. It makes sense with all the wheels being interchangeable.
The base steering wheel may just be a 3 spoke longacre racing wheel, I end up with a 15" one on my NUX wheel build. There is photo of the Furiosa's dash with a non decorated wheel.

You should. It is a good watch and probably the best movie of 2015. The extras are worth the price of the disc.

I only wish I had seen it at the cinema. I didn't, just watched it on BD and bought it after one view. I also bought the CD score as well.

What movie! What lovely movie :p

Re: Furiosa's steering wheel (Fury Road) - No screen shot exists??

Sweet, it looks like I've got about all there is to see of it. Boy, if you wanted to do the baby doll head wheel that Nux fights over you'd really have some great shots.

I'm definitely considering the art book, since it's such an arty movie. Any good references in there?

I'll be going for metal wire myself, despite my musings above. Just have to decide what to form it on.

As an aside, I was trying to figure out what the skeleton arm on the side of the war rig was made out of while I was watching it and thanks to the screen shots I'm pretty sure it was a rusty panel and they masked off the arm, then painted over it and removed the masking. Very rat rod, I dig it.

I believe they are symmetrical as well, or at least meant to be.

That shot also shows the top of the skull broken off, and some of the wire missing from the forehead. Do they even show that happening? It seems such a clean break. You sure notice way more little things when looking at screen shots.

I would imagine a way to do this is to make some hard forms like out of wood or clay and then lay down soft aluminum sculpting wire, then cast the while thing.

I don't think so, they probably just removed it so they could fit the harpoon, could take a look when I get home.

Would something along the lines of solder be any good for getting those nice lines right? I'm not sure of the pliability of aluminum wire, but solder ought to be able to do those tough looking shapes along the inside of the eye sockets

Re: Furiosa's steering wheel (Fury Road) - No screen shot exists??

If I was going to cast it I would definitely use solder. I would definitely NOT use lead-based solder if I was going to actually handle it. Silver brazing wire also comes to mind, but it would be expensive.

I'm going to try steel because I want to be able to handle it and for it to be durable. I also only want one so I have no reason to cast it and I'm most comfortable working with steel.

The form will either be body filler or wood. The decision will come down to mess versus ease of shaping. Too bad there's no pepakura for it, you could easily use it to cast a chunk of something to use.

Re: Furiosa's steering wheel (Fury Road) - No screen shot exists??

Oh wow, there was a great post somewhere on someone creating this and it looked really good. It might have even been this site!

Re: Furiosa's steering wheel (Fury Road) - No screen shot exists??

Yeah, I would totally do it the same way if I was going for a costume prop. No reason to have to carry a big steel weight around all day.
