Free Custom Water Cut Aluminum or Laser Cut Acrylic - 6th of August

I just hope some of the interest here in Free Part Day can help him generate some further sales among our group.

They've changed the specs? Damn! I spent hours testing and working out a file that would fit in the original specs.

Back to the drawing board...grumble...

Works, but the estimate is about $5 each for 1k pieces, so I'm assuming a second one will put it past $8.

With $15 shipping for a single Batarang, I think I'll just grab some from the Junkyard. I'm sure this is great for new pieces, but for anything preexisting it seems to be turning into a hassle. Also seems like a huge waste of material.

What am I doing wrong. I see the file at the bottom of the page, but where do I go from there ?

15 for shipping???? Ouch..

I just wanted to interject that Simon has been uber-helpful with answering my questions and helping me get some design problems sorted out. I'm already thinking ahead to a few other things I can get made up after FPD :thumbsup

I forgot to ask, so I am wondering if anyone else did. Is there any chance of doing a bulk order of the same part (batarang) for the X # of RPFers? If everyone is going after the same piece maybe it would save time.

Also, can someone reconfirm the shipping for one as well? I still am having trouble with the website although I am gradually starting to make some progress with Rogue Solo's help.

After seeing that they reduced the acceptable complexity level I'm considering doing something non prop related. After seeing the Make Magazine Razor phone stand I had a thought to make a stand for a Apple Ipod Touch. I've got some rough sketches and I'm going to start putting them into the online editor.

My other design that I'm sharing with a co-worker is going to be a logo, pretty easy and looks good in the models I've made up of them.

This idea had merit. Of course, unless BBS can handle 'drop shipping' them to the individuals there would be an added shipping cost as one person would have to receive the whole order and then to distribute them.

Also if it were a significant bulk order we could justify maxing the materials useage (8 piece per sheet) or for that matter, we need not be bound by the 9x9 restriction (could go larger, could go smaller).

I have no CAD skills since I learned AutoCAD-10 back in the late 80's.

I think in order to proceed with the "bulk order" we should first actually find out how many people would want to be in on the Batarang run. Because if it's only a few people, then there would be no point to it.

Is there anyone kind enough to take my Adobe Illustrator CS2 file for this free part day and convert it into a compatible file for Big Blue Saw?
It may be too complicated for them, but I thought I'd try.

I am having trouble converting it to the right version DFX file. I only 'need' two of the more solid recangles at the top and four of the more complicated shapes. i squeezed the other's in.

Granted...
What also must be discerned is what qty constitutes a bulk order?
Where are the price breaks? 50 pcs? 100?
BBS would undoubtedly charge by the piece, even if the design fits 8 or more 'bat-stars' on a given sized piece of raw material.
If each interested person takes 8 pcs then the order gets to 100 with only 13 interested persons.

Who will step up and 'chief' this as a run?

Are you talking do a "run" during Free Part Day, or separately? Because it's already been determined that to meet the elegibility requirements, each person would only be able to get away with a "design" of two Batarangs for their order. If we wanted to do an actual purchased run of these, using the design I have on file, it would cost $4.31 ea/50 ct, or $4.03 ea/100 ct, using the 1/8" Al-6061 plate.

Were those numbers posted earlier in this thread?
I must have missed it.

Yeah I was curious what they would cost each as a paid for run.
That is just the raw part w/o shipping cost right?
Guestimate that'd add another $5-$10 per order.

Set a of set 3 raw finish em yerself 'bat-stars' for about $20.
So... anyone interested in getting a few of these at those prices?

If you figure every one would want 2 or 3 it'd only take 20-25 people to make that doable.

Ok, so how about a custom motorcycle license plate holder?

I have no idea how to make DXF files, but I think something like this would be straight forward. I am going to try to come up with some ideas. If I do, can someone do a conversion for me?

If people are serious about doing a bulk run of 'bats' with the file posted here or another provided that is not a copy of a previous run like synasp's , then feel free to discuss it further with me as I have access to a laser cutter and water cutter and can get parts made below retail and out of the 'correct' material...

Sorry, the quantity may not have been posted here in those exact words, I'm going off of combined information from here and personal e-mails with the company. And correct, that is production cost without shipping.

If you can give me the plate dimensions and a general design idea for the frame, I can model it up and create a dxf for you.

Bump!

This is today, but it seems like they've changed some of the requirements. Before I had a design patterned twice that fit within their criteria, but now it doesn't seem like they'll accept it.

I was messing around with it this morning too, it does only allow one batarang now.

I went ahead and ordered one.
