Re: My first Pep attempt, old school Hero Stormtrooper
Thanks guy's
I got rid of the black lines on the tear drops, now to remove the rest bordering the other grey parts.
I've been looking up on how to create the bubble lenses. It would seem the way to go is to heat the acrylic sheet in the oven at 275F or 135C for about 5 minutes & then just push it into the eye openings to create the bubble. My only concern is marking the surface of the acrylic? as in finger prints or marks from gloves while its soft??
Has anyone done this? could offer any advise
Also the blue lines on the tubes either side, does anyone offer a downloadable template for these?
I'd like to avoid using a decal set if possible
Re: My first Pep attempt, old school Hero Stormtrooper
Thanks
Ok, things aren't going quite so well with the paintwork
I found a template for the blue stripes, I have the correct paint Humbrol 15 midnight blue, I made the template, did one side ok & the other side I put the template on the wrong way round :facepalm Such a stupid mistake!!
This on top of the black lines has forced my hand! I'm going to carefully rub it all down & re-spray it white, polish the hell out of it for maximum shine & wrap it in Silicone!
This way I can have a Hero & a Shadow trooper, I can also use a cast to make a Tie pilot & I need to buy some Silicone for my other project anyway.
Re: My first Pep attempt, old school Hero Stormtrooper
In case you need any shots for reference, I own a Hero Helmet taken from the original 1976 moulds (It's an Andrew Ainsworth). Happy to send you some pictures if you need anything specific.
Re: My first Pep attempt, old school Hero Stormtrooper
Thanks for the offer J
There's a link in my first post with a site I've been using for reference. As well as original shots they also cover the SDS helmet in pretty good detail
The brow trim turned up this morning & I realised I haven't posted any pics of back of this helmet?
So here's a few more pics with this mornings painting cockup & the new brow trim fitted

Troy (apeitup) Next week... no problem!
The lenses were tricky! Like a fool I bought 3mm (1/8") acrylic which is too thick! I'll re-make them with 1.5mm, it'll be much easier.
Just behind & to the left of the helmet in the pics above you can see the mould I made to shape the lenses, it'll work better with thinner acrylic & the lenses will be slightly more defined
Re: My first Pep attempt, old school Hero Stormtrooper
Thanks
Here's a bit more on the lenses:
I made the mould out of Urethane by sculpting the shape of the lenses to the helmet out of oil based clay, I then made up the rest of the mould with making tape. After curing I removed it all from the face of the helmet & cleaned up the cast.
I heated my Acrylic in the oven on a foil lined tray at 180 deg C, times for baking was guess work. Once soft enough I quickly pushed the pieces into the eye openings of the helmet & then pushed the mould onto the Acrylic to form the bubble shape. The Acrylic cools really quickly! so if you have a go make sure you've got everything you need to hand & work fast!
As I've said, I used 3mm Acrylic which was too think imo. I may have to adjust the temp for a thinner 1.5mm Acrylic.
Re: My first Pep attempt, old school Hero Stormtrooper
Its all stripped down now & I've fixed some minor imperfections.
Wet flatted all the parts again today with 1200 grit wet, de-greased them & re-sprayed them in gloss white.
Got a slight reaction between the new coat of white & the remains of the grey & black :facepalm I should have expected it really :rolleyes
Its not the end of the world though I've got a great finish on the white parts
Silicone is due to turn up tomorrow & I'll probably leave this to go off for a good 24 hours before I Wax the hell out of it & start mould making
