First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Off to Comic Con!!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

A heads up... I just finished the armor breakdown of the same model used from this helmet. Ill be posting a thread on monday the pepakura files. Im not sure how they will fit because its off the game model. The files are all unfolded in letter and A4 printing formats... Ill post a link on your thread to mine if you want.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Sounds like perfect timing.
My helmet construction will be done tonight, and ready for final touches and paint. Armor's next, so options would be great!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Here's a shot of the final epoxy application, and re-primering to check for uneven spots. I'll be doing one more application of spot putty where needed, then I'll hopefully be ready for final sanding before paint.

I threw in some different shots, to include a rather ominous looking one, and one that looks like a prison mugshot.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

For some reason that last picture reminds me of Dr Doom in the 80's spiderman cartoon. Awesome job!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Haha Thanks.
It's probably because I have no foam in it yet to keep it off my face, so it's pressed against me, and all you see is MOUTH. lol

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

i know this is late, but i just saw the post. I took this when i was at universal studios. The helmet looks sweet by the way. Hope to do the same one when i can find some time, Dr.Doom and Magneto are my favorite villains.

I remember that! From one of the rides, right? Universal had some great set pieces on the Marvel stuff...
And much better rides than Disney!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Tonight's update includes a few shots of Dr. Rainbow...

I did another sand down tonight after last night's paint/glazing putty touch up.

Not too bad; the few images following show after sanding and another primer coat. I found a few small spots that will need a little more glazing putty, but nothing major left. I'll throw some in those pits and probably go to a hand sanding next. I think if I continue trying to make it perfect, I'll either never get it done or mess something up.

In all honesty, I'm pretty happy with the outcome of my first pep file so far!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Did some wet sanding by hand last night, wiped everything down and threw 1 light coat of primer on.
Let it dry, then threw a medium coat on, and then one more when that dried.

I could sweat every small deficiency and never be done, or I can move on.

So; next will be paint! Any suggestions for color before I go buy some?

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Lookin good man. Are you planning on building the little voice piece that they sometimes show in the mouth? Sorry I couldnt find a great pic

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Oh also to answer your color question... i believe a few other people have used Duplicolor Chrome for their Doom masks... not that I keep a running helmet folder on my computer by character with pep files, pictures, and notes on others builds that I could refer to... fyi your build has been added to the Doom folder ;)

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Yeah, I'm building that piece seperately. The pep fold was insane; I didn't even try it. Seemed like more work than it was worth when I can build it out of *anything*.

I'll look at that color. Ultimately, I'll need to use it for the armor too.
I think I'm going to play with the paint job a little to add some extra pop to it. If all works out, I'll leave some areas more matte finish and others polished to give added depth. It should work itself out based on how I final sand it, I hope. If not, I may do some masking and painting with a slightly different tint. Not sure yet.

*EDIT*
After looking into Duplicolor's paints, I may go with the Stainless Steel. I think it may look better than attempting a chrome finish..

Looking good. For some reason it doesn't "look" evil enough to me. I don't know if it's because the mouth "grill" isn't there or because there's no hood. I have the Bowen statue right in front of me and that one looks evil. Nice work with the bondo. Keep it up.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

I think the "evil" is yet to come... :love

Here it is after two coats of Duplicolor "Stainless Steel"
The paint is amazing looking, and goes on very evenly for spray paint.

I'm letting it fully dry overnight, then I'll be washing some black in the low portions of the mask to add some serious depth before clearcoat.

I was going to make rivet heads from sculpey, then remembered how much that stuff loves spraypaint :facepalm

I'll probably pick up something "rivety" this weekend and glue them in place.

I have to say that I have never liked this version of doctor dooms mask but this is astounding. The work that you have done makes it look better than I thought possible and it is turning out to be an amazing piece. In that second last one it almost looks like doom is smiling though. Maybe it is just happy there is finally a good version of it.

awesome! Make sure you post on my doom armor pep thread when you start working on the armor.. If needed ill make changes to the models... Great work!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Yeah, I won't have time to do any more pep before the NYCC...
I'm building my armor from actual armor templates, so I can cut whole pieces and just bend them. I may go back to it for next year, however. If I do, I'll be pepping!

Here's two shots this morning. I faked a hood using my robe... :cool
