First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Off to Comic Con!!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

The mouth is pretty well obstructed by the grill. As for the openings in the cheeks; I'm unsure.
I'm also toying with possible neck armor, but depending on how I wear the cape will determine if I need it or not. A lot of costumes show the cape as being held on by "magic" with the discs and rope/chain, and yet the hood is traditionally fully closed under his neck. Sometimes, that space is open. So, I'm once again at odds with how I want to wear it.
I was planning on anchoring the cape to/through the tunic and hiding the anchor points under the discs, but this will leave the neck exposed and in need of armor. The more I think about it, the more I feel this is not classic doom.

Anyone have an opinion on the "right" way to wear the cape? As an afterthought, the hood probably should have been sewn to the tunic. Then, the cape would truly be it's own entity...

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

Wow! that looks brilliant! Nice job with it.

I finished mine not too long ago either, but I don't think it looks as nicely done as yours. For mine, I used the heads of paper fasteners for the bolts; painted a cheap plastic sieve for a mesh in the mouth; a bit of old washing line as trim for the back (so I don't cut myself on any rogue strands of fiberglass); and some foam pipe I found in my garage for cheek decorations, arranged to look a bit like a vent of some sort.

I also sanded down some of the edges to make it look a bit worn (the nose is the most obvious part), and the slightly misshapen jaw as well to make it look battle damaged, like it's taken the brunt of a right hook from the Thing.

Before I fiberglassed it, I cut part off the lower back of the cranium in order to be able to fit it on in one go. My hat size is 7 1/8 (57cm), for reference.

Your mask looks amazing, Tastyburger! I can't wait to see the pictures when you get the tunic and the cape.

As for the hood in the comics and the 3D model it's tied to the cape. It's even slightly darker than the tunic.

EvilSnow, your mask looks amazing as well. If you are planning on doing the whole costume, I think you could make it like the cover from Secret Wars

SECRETWARS9-6a00d83451d77069e200e54f4c8e5f8834-500wi.jpg

(One of my favorite Doom's artworks)

I think it would fit the whole battle-damaged theme!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

^^ That would be epic!

Thanks for the second opinion on the cape/hood thing. I think I'll try to close the cape up under the chin and still maintain the accent pieces alomg with it. The cape is tailored to be fully closed if need be, but I think I can use the discs as additional anchors, or tie backs, maybe.

Awesome Idea man for the bolts! I will tell my friend about them.. Thanks for sharing!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

Looks great. Those rivets look a bit big to me. The ones on Evilsnow's mask look to be about the right size. Nice work though.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

The wife snapped a shot of me, test fitting the tunic and cape over the basic body armor I am building to go under everything..
Since it won't be seen, it's just there to bulk up the upper end of my body. I'm not a skinny guy, but if I'm going to have armor on my arms and legs, it won't look right without implied armor under the whole outfit. Plus, I need something to anchor the arms to..

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

I've been doing a lot of brainstorming, and I think I'll be attaching the collarbone discs via magnets attached to the armor under the tunic. that should minimize the opportunity for the key features drifting or hanging in the wrong manner.

Anyone have any good ideas for mounting the arm armor? I need to be able to put them on after the tunic goes over the body armor, and being able to get them on/off alone is key. I'll likely string all the individual components together with leather lacing, as I have a bag full from another project.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Helmet Finished! On to the Armor!

Perhaps you could attach the armour to your arms like sleeves, though personally i would keep the forearms and gauntlets separate from the upper arm armour, as it needs to be able to twist as well.

If all else fails, research medieval knight armour to see how that was all put together, and you might get a better idea of what you need to do.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Helmet Finished! On to the Armor!

Yeah; the shoulder armor and upper arm piece will be attached together, and the gauntlets will cover most (if not all) of the forearm. Either way, mobility will be a must.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Helmet Finished! On to the Armor!

Here's some shots of the body armor, in progress..
I have the upper arms done as well, but not pictured.

As the majority of this will be covered by the tunic, it's more for function than fashion. I will be dressing up the pauldrons and sanding/painting everything, regardless.

The pauldrons are attached via hot glue and nylon strapping. I left slack in the strap, and glued earth magnets to the ends. This way, when I slide the arm pieces on by myself, the matching magnets catch the strap with a click, and I know they are in place. The magnets are about 85% effective, as if I move my arms to radically, they let go. No big deal; a little twisting and I hear the snap again. Besides that, the forearm/elbow armor will hold them up too.

Sorry about the skin! I plan on wearing a black "ninjasuit" top under it, (that's what we called the long sleeve underarmor tops we got in the military) so the best and most comfortable way to build is as you see here.. :unsure

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Helmet Finished! On to the Armor!

Update:
I've been horrible about getting pics up for the armor build, but I will, soon.. I promise!

The abdominal portion of the body armor was removed, because it made me look 50 pounds heavier than I am. Not a good look. :wacko

The cape and cloak are finished, and look great. I have biceps, forearms, shins and thighs built.

All that I have left is the calf closures, hands (which are built over large gloves, along with the forearm) and accent pieces. Then; paint!

Everything is rigged so I can put it on by myself. The body armor is inside the tunic, which I slide on as one unit. The pauldrons are strapped on to the armor, and the bicep parts (hardest to get on due to reach) are attached by magnets with velcro over them. The magnets catch the strapping and pull the velcro together without much effort.

I'll get pics up to show how I assembled this, shortly. :facepalm

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Helmet Finished! On to the Armor!

Here's some late, yet promised photos...
I'm down to the wire now, with only the gauntlets left to build. I came up with a simple pattern for the fingers that will work across them all, only requiring minor shortening per finger.

The first shot is of my primered upper leg portion. I have a strap installed to loop up through my belt, with velcro for adjustment if needed.

Picture 2 is the upper arm section. Like I said before; attached with magnets and velcro.

Pic three is my "creative" shin armor. Using the edging from the foam, I made a two piece locking system to strap the upper portion on, and a strip of polypropylene plastic (the same material for the upper legs/arms) for the lower section. I was going to do a full leg wrap, but deemed it unnecessary, what with the cape covering most all of my back.

Next: a very unflattering picture of the upper armor (which will not be seen) along with the chest medallion placement. They are attached with four pairs of earth magnets, so I can position them over the tunic or cape, depending on the situation.

Lastly; another better angle (without me in it) of the armor.

So, painting has started. Good thing: I have 2 days!

I know the armor's not nearly as impressive as the helmet.. I was under a time crunch due to sewing delays.

Oh well. I may revisit the armor for future usage...
This will work fine for now :unsure

We'll see how it looks all painted.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Helmet Finished! On to the Armor!

How are you going to be doing the neck because it is going to be difficult to connect it to the base of the helmet.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Helmet Finished! On to the Armor!

My neck is covered by the cape. I toyed with the idea of a collar piece, but decided against it for comfort reasons.

Had a BLAST at NYCC yesterday.. I have had 8 hours of sleep in two days, though, so here's a quick update:

My costume was WAY more well-received than I thought it would be. I must have had my picture taken over 300 times, and I spent the majority of the day walking at a snail's pace and trying not to dehydrate.

While the armor was basic, I think the helmet sold it. I had all sorts of questions:
Did you buy that here?
Where can I get one?
Did you really make that?
Is that metal?
Will you choke me?

Can I get a pic of you on my back?

That last one was not granted a yes.. :/

Anyways, here's some pics that one of my buddies took, plus my brother's Merchant costume, complete with a very popular "Jill Sandwich" :love

I'll keep digging the net for more. If anyone stumbles on any.. sent them my way please!
