First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Off to Comic Con!!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Doom demands lavish comfort, and that is one comfy bathrobe... :lol

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Googley Eyes and scrapbooking Brads both make good rivets.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

GOOGLEY EYES!

Genius!
And much cheaper than what I was going to do...
I was thinking of buying hammer rivets and just using the one side.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

That is actually an excellent a idea, I was thinking on what to use on mine... Now I know!

Also, I have a request for you. Take a picture of the mask with the googley eyes before you paint it.

lol... I'll paint them before they go on the mask. It's easier to work the clear coat without having to pilot around rivets. :lol

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

That last shot with the robe looks great. You're eyes aren't fully showing. Just the bottom half of them show. That's perfect. Still looks odd with the mouth showing. I'm looking at the Bowen statue again and I think the difference with yours is that the mouth goes straight across. His mouth is curved downward, like a frown. That gives it that evil look.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Yeah; I didn't deviate from the pep file much. The mouth is pretty straight in it.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

And looking at it small like in your avatar, it almost looks like it curves upward a slight bit. Makes it like a slight smile.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Looks good. Like the design. Are you planning on making armor for the costume ?

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

It doesn't curve up. It's all based on the angle of the photo. If I take a lower, more dramatic shot, it looks curved down. That's the nature of a curve! :p

I am making armor next. My cape and tunic are in progress by a friend, who took over last minute after my original seamstress experienced sewing machine failure. The armor will be most likely basic template armor; nothing super fancy. I want it to look old-world, not modern tech. Plus, I only have two weeks til NYCC, so I gotta get crackin!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Have you looked at the armor on the Bowen statue? It's pretty simple. Looks like it can be done fairly quickly and easily.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

You love the Bowen stuff, huh?
I looked at the Bowen statues, and yes; he does exaggerate the curvature of the mouth more than the pep. As for the armor, I would like to emulate his work if I can with my time constraints. We'll see how that works out over the next few days...

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

I do like the Bowen statue and with it sitting on a shelf right behind my monitor, I'm constantly seeing it. :lol I also like the version that Bob Layton did in Iron Man 150. Those are the definitive, classic Doom. I just don't think people need to get all fancy with the armor. The Bowen one is simple and it works.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

I think the helmet's done!
I got my cape and tunic back last night, as well.. So the armor build has started!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

damn man that came out great.

What did you end up using for the bolts?

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

I taped them to a sheet of paper, then gave them a light sanding for better paint adhesion. (just in case)

Then, I sprayed them with the Stainless steel paint (two coats) and washed them with grey.

I wiped off the tops, and them let them dry.
Then, I just superglued them on. Quick and painless!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pep Helmet Finished!

Excellent mask! Astounding, really.

Do you plan on putting any sort of black mesh behind the mouth or other open areas?
