First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Off to Comic Con!!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

I am doing armor, but it (hopefully) won't take as long as the helmet.
I'm using armor templates cut out of flexible cutting boards. They're made polypropyline, so they'll be flexible, light and strong.
i've fall in love with the earth magnets, so I'd like to use them to emulate rivets while being functional.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

when you fiberglass the insides, how do you smoothen them so that they don't scrape against you when you're wearing it?

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

I did two slush pours of resin on the inside. First coat covered/soaked/sealed the fiberglass, and the second coat covered any strays. It's a little lumpy inside, but very few edges.

Anything I had left exposed was cut off or sanded off with a dremel.

It doesn't really need to be pretty on the inside. No sense in trying to beautify something no one will care to see...

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Well, it's official!
I hate all Bondo products!

I bought some glazing putty to "help" with the finishing stages. It's just a more liquid bondo with a faster cure time. Absolutely NOT what I want for finishing! I guess I spent too many years sculpting with my fingers. I HATE excessive sanding!

I must amend this statement slightly.
It appears my sandpaper was old and crappy. Once I bought new pads for my mouse sander, it ate that bondo like it was pancakes and syrup..

I still plan on using the epoxy putty for definition around the mouth and eyes, and anywhere else that may need a good, sharp edge.

Sanding was actually pretty darn quick with good paper, though. Makes me not so hesitant to use bondo, knowing I can cut it down fast.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Watching this helmet come together really makes me want to try my hand a pep work.
Love the progress so far, can't wait to see this under a green hood!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Beware; Dr. Bathrobe!

I do my best work dressed like that.. Don't judge me! :lol

Here's a shot of the helmet before any major sanding and after. In both cases, I threw some primer on it, but there was also some glazing putty visible in the first shot.

I found some low spots in the sanding process last night, so I'll be reglazing those. Once I'm happy with the overall shape, I'll add the epoxy putty for the hard lines and tough to sand spots, like under the bottom lip.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Looking really good now. I actually like that you did the full helmet and cut it. I was debating on just doing the face but this looks great.

also if you have a harbor freight near you they sell really cheap mouse sander shaped pads

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

The pack of pads I got from Walmart weren't bad, and they were perforated for multiple applications, depending on which sander you have.
Now that they are doing the job, I couldn't see using more than the 5 I got in this pack. Finish sanding will likely be done by hand, or I'll get some fine paper for the mouse. We'll see when we get there...

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

This is my first build up to correct some flaws in the pepakura design.

The eye construction leaves little room for resin/bondo work, and suffered a little warping during resin coating. As my first attempt to use 2 part epoxy putty as a sculpting material, I tackled the right (his left) eye.

I sanded the area a little to give some extra surface area to the putty, and began working it in.

Things I learned right off hand:

15 minute set time is pretty much perfect. Plenty of time to get the groundwork laid and smooth.

This putty is extremely sticky. Keep your tools wet. It helps keep the putty surface smooth as well as you manipulate the work area

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Bottom jaw refining is done, and I've added definition to the brow ridges.

I was gonna go off in my own direction with the brow, as seen here, but I've decided I don't like it. I'll be shaving the high ridge down and carving in a seperation line, more true to the original Marvel Vs. Capcom model the pep file was based on.

After that; cheekbone refining and some small alignment correction... That's the bulk of it. I'll do a little more spot putty work, then final sanding before paint.

Anyone have any good screenshots of the M vs. C Doom mask from in-game? I'm trying to find better shots of how the lines run around the face and eyebrow area.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Yeah, I've seen that one and the shot of him with his arms crossed menacingly.
My issue is that I'm unsure how the brow lines terminate.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Sweet! I'll have to see if I have any of the old 3d software on the hard drive still..

This may be exactly what I need! Thanks!

Alternatively if you have MvC3/UMvC3 you could look in the character profiles and look at the details of Doom's mask

You are welcome !

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Thanks for that file. I loaded it in Poser and did a quick render.

Looks like the concept art is far more detailed than the model was. I guess that leaves it open to interpretation..

Good for me!

I'll just go with what I think would represent Doom the best, given the architecture of the base model.

Cool! I look forward to seeing it.
What are you using for the basis of the armor?

Here's what I did last night:
I closed up the left side seam on the helmet with more putty, using it to even everything out in the process. After the putty started to harden, I just sliced through it with an exacto, seperated the two halves and cleaned up the two faces a little. I'm not worried about a perfect, tight seam, as Doom's helmet always had that "bolted together" look. I may even throw rivets along the cut line and embrace it! :p
