First intro; first build! Dr. Doom: Off to Comic Con!!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Damn man that looks great. I should really give this one a try.

Not sure where you are located but if you have a Harbor Freight close to you they have some pretty strong small magnets for $1 for a set of 8 I believe.

That does look like it fits like a glove. Great work on the cutting... i would have been crazy nervous.

We do have a Harbor Freight...
I wouldn't have thought of them. Thanks for the tip!

I was thinking about that, but I wouldn't dare offer until the helmet was finished to my satisfaction.
I've been a "recreational" artist for years, doing drawings, painting and sculpture. I am a perfectionist and proud of my work, so I would never try and market something I'm unhappy with.

Let's wait and see the finished product, and then I'll consider staring an interest thread.

Thank you very much for the compliment!!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Haha that is my first stop for everything just because it's pretty damn cheap and they always have 20% coupons

You were spot on about Harbor Freight..
I got some perfect low profile rare earth magnets for 2 bucks a 10 pack.

So powerful, they stick together with my daughter's hand between them!

Man I am tempted to try my hand at pep files. but I have a feeling starting with Doom is going to end badly :lol

Your project would be Doomed before it even began!

Bondo is the DEVIL!!

Not a big fan of this stuff; I have discovered.

The workability time is horribly short, especially when you need to get around fine details. As you can see from my mess, I spent a good amount of time with my dremel, undoing the bondo nightmare.

Actually, for one coat and cleanup with only a sanding disc, I guess it's not too bad. I'll do a little more fine sanding around the mouth and eyes to get my details back, then I'll give another shot at a SMOOTH coat.

I did use small batches; it's just a bit annoying.

Anyone ever lay sculpey over bondo? If I knew that would work, I'd be way happier!!

Anyways; I must drive on!

Looking good bro! Cant wait for the whole thing to be finished

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

I am currently working on this exact mask. How much does it way after the fiberglass and Bondo ?

I did one light resin coat outside, a fiberglass/resin coat inside and another inside coat of resin after that.

Bondo is still in progress, but I would have to say it's less than 2 pounds? It's lighter than my motorcycle helmet, for sure!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Decided I have to take this in small bites, for sanity's sake..

So, I started smoothing out the top of the head and defining some lines. I have more bondo to add (then take away) to the face from the jaw-down.

I'm used to more time to my medium before cure. I almost feel like I'm working backwards from my usual techniques, so I definitely have a learning curve.

How does glazing putty work? I have several pits/low spots that don't need a lot of fill, and I'd hate to bondo overkill just to re-sand the whole head again.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

After a few days to rest, back at it!

Here's the next coat of bondo on the bottom half of the face.

Question: Glazing putty instructions state to apply over primer. Is this a necessity, or can I apply straight to bondo? Is there an adhesion concern?

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Hey, Tastyburger.

I've been making my own Dr Doom mask here in the UK, and had a click round online to see if I could find anyone else who had made one from Pepakura, and what it would look like when it was done (more or less), and I'd just like to say that yours looks fantastic (no pun intended).

Mine is slightly off in alignments (one side of the jaw juts out to the side a bit more than the rest) due to inexperience in pepakura, and I've finished applying a layer of resin inside and outside, and I've noticed you've added a layer or two of bondo to yours.

First of all, what is bondo, and is it necessary for when I paint it, or can I just apply a layer of primer before I commence painting?

Thanks,

EvilSnow
