First ever attempt at putting together a costume - Black Widow - advice appreciated!

After purchasing tickets and hotel rooms for the 2013 MCM Comic Con in London, I chose to venture into the realm of costume making, seeing as the rest of my party had decided to don outfits. My sewing skills leave something to be desired so this was always going to be a gargantuan effort, whatever I decided to make. However. I've always liked Natasha Romanoff's character and I figured her movie Avenger's outfit would be relatively simple to put together, as well as being a pretty popular choice by other people.

I started by watching tutorials online and gathering all the details of her costume, and in this process I came upon this site. After hours and pages of thread reading, I felt confident to try and get this project up and running - starting with the belt buckle. I think I should reprimand you guys for making this silicone mold making look so darn simple, but I assure you, for such a small item it caused me a huge amount of hassle. My clay making abilities are small to none and I had several attempts at making the Black Widow insignia, only to give up and settle with my poor, child like, version. I was later going to find out that this was in fact the entertaining part and worse was yet to come. I followed the advice of my fellow RPF members and made my cardboard box, sealed with hot glue, sellotape and clay, attached my clay at the bottom and poured in the silicone mix and yet it STILL managed to leak everywhere. I left it for 24 hours in any case, despite the overflow, and waited to see what would happen. In the disassembling stage, my clay chose to collapse into the mold (I don't know if this happens to everyone) and I had to spend a good hour picking out all the broken bits of clay without damaging the mold itself. After a good clean with cotton buds, I was actually reasonably pleased with the outcome, considering the completed version I'd envisaged. As long as I don't look at all the perfect, polished attempts of others, my mould seems like a huge achievement to me.

Felling a little more optimistic, I mixed my water clear resin (after poisoning myself on the overwhelming fumes) and poured it into the mould. After a much quicker curing time, I removed the finished piece and to my immense relief, it kind of looked like what it was supposed to! My efforts hadn't been in vain! I'm going to give it a few days to dry properly and then I'll give it a good wet and dry sand to get rid of the copious rough edges gained on the process. I must say, despite the stress and disappointment, I'm actually really getting into making the outfit up myself. Knowing that I made the buckle myself gives me this geeky sense of pride and gets me excited about continuing with the rest. And like I said, tips would be immensely appreciated from you guys, particularly any Black Widowers. I need all the help I can get!

Sorry, no tips from me since I'm a newb myself but definitely keeping an eye on this. :)

Thanks, not sure if it will be anything worth viewing though but I'll give it a try!

Here is the buckle fully primed and painted.

Just sanded it with wet and dry sandpaper (which didn't really achieve much) then used a plastic primer and painted it with acrylic model paints. It's still very bumpy, wonky, uneven - generally all over the place - but for all the grief, I can't say I'm horrified by it. It kind of turned out somewhat like it's supposed to and will hopefully look better attached to the belt.

Will probably see you at MCM... I'll be with the massive avengers group...

The buckle doesn't look that bad, I think you needed to use an electric sander with it rather then by hand. Scrubs up well after painting though!

Re: First ever attempt at putting together a costume - Black Widow - advice appreciat

It looks great after the paint job! Nice work!

Re: First ever attempt at putting together a costume - Black Widow - advice appreciat

Thanks guys! Yea, it probably would have done a better job but I'm not sure I trust myself at this stage to use an electric sander :facepalm maybe after a little more experience lol!

Looking forward to seeing everyone else's costumes at the con, I'm trying to persuade my boyfriend to go as Nick Fury so we can have a little S.H.I.E.L.D thing going on.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of stuff to use for the boots? I've bought a pair of black wedge boots from ebay but I wanted to customise them so they're like hers;

Not really sure where to start though or what materials to use.

I have the same problem. What do your eBay boots look like? Do they have an area you can add elastic and a zip into it?

Here are the boots;

I've bought a couple of zips to go down the centre but I'm still unsure of what to use on the rest.

Elsewhere, I've managed to finish my Black Widow belt;

I just got some black elastic, some PU leather material and sewed it around the elastic, then attached the buckle with some velcro, as well as a velcro fastening.

The area of the boot is quite smooth so should be simple enough to make attachments to. The extra detail already on the boots is easy enough to cut off as well. I'm a bit worried about cutting into the boots in case I ruin them but has to be done I guess. Do you have any boots started?

I've started with my utility belt - decided to go quite simple on the pouches for now as I think molding is not my strong suit.

I cut a stencil and then made the shape out of craft foam, using 5mm foam for the circular discs. Then I spray painted them all as I couldn't seem to find any black craft foam in stores!

Then I just folded these guys around, glued them and covered them in a PU leather material before adding the few final details.

They're obviously nothing special but they'll do for what I need them for and hopefully in the future, I'll get practicing on my mold making skills for a more professional outcome.

Looks pretty good so far -- I'm still not brave enough to try casting and molding! Construction of the taser cartridge holsters is simple, but effective. Going to have to look into something similar, myself, I think.

For the boots, I actually bought some wide black elastic, some square rings, and some velcro, planning on making some removable straps. I'd thought to stitch down the middle with a narrow zig zag stitch on my sewing machine to make the contrasting stripes on the elastic. You could probably do similar with some careful application of fabric paint or hand sewing.

I finally decided to focus attention to detail on other parts, and ended up with a pair of boots I think are a near-match, and keep to the feeling of the design. And I can wear them around the con without killing my feet! =D

Don't put your work down. That looks almost spot on and it is a way to create the parts you need. And hey the old saying goes, "If it's stupid and it works, it ain't stupid"

Those look great! :D

Re: First ever attempt at putting together a costume - Black Widow - advice appreciat

Aww thanks guys. Comments like these make me feel not so crappy about my stuff :) The problem I seem to be having at the minute is with glue - a lot of the parts seem to be falling apart as the glue from my glue gun doesn't seem to be strong enough. Can anyone recommend a really good quality, strong glue that doesn't tend to leave marks?

After many hours scouring the internet for a catsuit that wasn't wet look, I ended up giving up and buying one anyway from ebay. After I got it though, I decided it just looked way too trashy, not at all black widow and tried looking again - I ended up coming across this person -

Black Lycra Suit Spandex Zentai Catsuit Costume Unisex for sale

It cost me about £40 (including shipping) and if you give them your measurements, they custom make it for you at no extra cost. Here I am with it on (sorry about the hat but I've not washed my hair :unsure

It's SUPER comfy and fits me perfectly to the measurements I gave. The material is the most 'matte' I could find without making the suit myself (which would never happen as I'm awful at sewing).

I've also got these embroidered patches which I bought from ebay for about a tenner which I need to attach at some point.

I finally finished my utility belt - pouches are made and I have velcroed them to the belt as well as sewing an elastic strip around to keep them in place. Holsters are ordered so they should hopefully finish it off nicely!

I have had so much trouble with the bites though! I saw on an online tutorial to buy some fake bullet strips and to spray paint them which is what I did, however my first set I forgot to prime so that didn't work out too well and the paint just scratched off when I put them back together. Second set have been primed and painted but the spray paint just seems to stay tacky and sticks to everything - pulling off the paint. I've kept the same set though and just gone over all the rough bits with model paint in the hope that they'll stay this way just for the one day. I think next time I'd be better making my own!

Looks good so far -- and fits the bill! Wish I could recommend something to help with the sticking paint, but painting isn't really my thing. =\

Looking forward to seeing the whole thing put together!

Re: First ever attempt at putting together a costume - Black Widow - advice appreciat

Thanks! Hopefully should be ok when it's all done, only have until next week to do it though - eeeek!

Re: First ever attempt at putting together a costume - Black Widow - advice appreciat

Don't worry about rough edges or whatever on things like your buckle. For your first casting job it looks really good, and will fit the bill nicely. I always follow the "3 metre rule" of cosplay, which states that no matter how many inconsistencies and rough parts you can see up close because you MADE the item, if it looks good at about 3 metres then it's fine because that is about the distance that most photos are taken from at cons ;). Besides we're always our own harshest critics, I know myself I always see problems with my own work that other people either don't see or don't think are an issue. As for the paint remaining tacky, that could have something to do with humidity or the place you are painting them in. Maybe trying putting either a matte or gloss clearcoat over the top, depending on the type of finish you're looking for, and see if that gets rid of the tackyness?

Good luck with your build, I always enjoy seeing a good Black Widow :D.
