Fifth Element Stone Box

I am looking to build the box from Fifth Element that Jean-Baptiste steals from the Diva's room. I have watched the scene several times and there are some great shots of every side.

This is my first prop build and was wondering if anyone else has made this or a method I could go about to scale the box properly. I was thinking of basing it off of assuming Gary Oldman's hand is around the size of mine.

Any tips and tricks would be muchly appreciated! I will be updating with some pictures once I start putting it together!

Here are some of the better screen caps I got of the box. Shouldn't be too hard of a build, but the devil will be in the details. It will be my first prop!

Looks almost like they used wire mesh under the fabric to get that grid pattern.

It could be fiber reinforced paper packing tape with a gloss finish over it. [strike] I think I just received a package with tape that looks like the box but I think I already go rid of it.[/strike]

Yeah good idea with the mesh. Was thinking of fleshing out the dimensions with a cardboard model first. Then I will probably make it out of wood to make it structurally sound and give it some weight, wrap it in some sort of chicken wire mesh and bind it in fabric strips.
