Fiberglass Helmet Complete! (pic intensive)

If it was my helmet I wouldn't remove the ears...it would be like having an incomplete prop replica if the ears are replaced with other ones. Just MHO. I would dremel a groove along the boundary of the ear and the rear cap...deeper where there would be a gap, very shallow the rest of the way around. Then add some whethering...not paint...inside the groove. But I guess that approach depends on how thick the fiberglass is there...the deepest would be just 1/8th inch...not much. Nice progress on it...

I actually like Sithlord's idea about using a Dremel to cut "a groove along the boundary of the ear and the rear cap".

Great idea..

Though, wouldn't it need backing at the ear section on the inside to ensure the area doesn't end up too thin and eventually falling apart?

I don't know what your helmet looks like from the inside (recessed around inside of ears or flush with surface of rear cap?), but it would be easy to put some bondo or something on the inside to reinforce that area in case you are concerned about it getting too thin...I think the ears on that helmet are too valuable to destroy...they look nicer than the ones on the TE1....

It would definitely be doable without destroying them. I was picturing mine with the same ears on it, just the area beneath the ears built up so it appears to be a complete helmet under the ears. Otherwise you would just have a gap between the ear and the side of the face, but nothing to make you assume that the helmet is complete if the ears were removed. I would just dremel them off from the inside but keep the ears intact to be reattached. So far this helmet that is painted looks outstanding. Even without the gaps it looks incredible.

i would think that if i got a Gino or TE1 or 2 GF... etc. that i wouldnt fill the gaps to give it an idealised look...

so i dont see why you would take a solid fiberglass helmet and cut the ears off... :unsure

the more ive thought about it...

it is what it is, if you cut it, it will take away a bit of what it was...

and if you think about it, the TKs werent supposed to look like they were glued together flimsy styrene (even though they were) they were mean to look like solid armor, and as kids thats what most of us thought they were...

so why not keep it as is?

the paintjob looks amazing. youve got the right mic tips... slap some green plastic inside it...

your done. B)

i do think it looks awesome, im just saying, if i bought a SDS (will never happen) but if i did, i wouldnt change it to look more screen accurate, cause that would ruin what it is...

there are lots of custom FG helmets on Ebay... but this is a TE fiberglass... i wouldnt do ANYTHING that couldnt be undone, and thats just my 2 cents

Hey Oldken,

I agree with you 100%. I only wanted to attempt a modification with the ears because some people express that the molded-in ears is one of the major reasons they would not want the helmet. There are some aspects of the fiberglass helmet that cant be changed to make it more accurate, like the material its made from. Other than that, there is no reason that this helmet couldn't be a dead ringer for the original helmet that it came from. If someone leaves the ears as-is, that's going to be awesome, as we can see in this thread with the helmet that has been painted. If someone wanted gripe about them being molded-in, i'd like to experiment and see if the separate ear look can be achieved with a fiberglass helmet. I dont particularly care either way. I was one of the people years ago that asked TE why he couldn't reduce the size of the gaps under the ears. He said he trimmed them to match the originals, which had gaps. I think having them would be cool, and leaving them molded in will be cool. Its all about your preference. I just want to see what the possibilities are.

Are we allowed to be talking about a banned members item? :rolleyes

well since TE banned himself... yes and no?

This is a project thread. Some are getting this item and the discussion has become one of tradition V manufacture methods. TE ain't the topic, so be chilly :)

Nor was SPFX the topic of another thread, but someone got smacked down for even mentioning his name.

Come on guys don`t get this thread banned.I`m enjoying it.

Cheers,
Ben

I don't want it shut down either, but if there are rules in place, then they need to be applied to everyone, not just certain individuals.

Ok guys, like it has been mentioned, TE is not the topic, and we should move back onto topic. This has been a great read as far as the information in this thread goes, I would hate to have to close it.

Thanks,

Bryan

Any new pictures or updates?
[/b]

Newest pictures are in post #55.

I should have the finished helmet this weekend and will get pics up by Monday.

Here are pics of the completed helmet.

I have it in hand and it has a very good weight and feel to it and looks very much like it did on screen.

This helmet looks so good, that I am considering wearing it to C4. :)

Enjoy.
