FemShep N7 Breather Helmet (first time!) + Beginnings of N7 armor

Hi there, I'm brand new to this site, just LOVE getting inspired by everyone's amazing artwork.

Ive been working on this helmet on and off for a while now, and wanted to make a thread since I'm starting to pick up momentum on the project. I am at university full time and I work almost full time, so I am not as fast as I could be. :( But I will attempt to keep up with this thread as my project progresses!

I am a 2D traditional and digital artist, but I have never built anything 3D before, so excuse my ignorance. Most of these techniques I have never done before, so I might make a lot of noob mistakes. I am trying to learn from experience as well as the amazing tutorials I can find here and elsewhere. ;)

(Not really sure how to add pics at the right size on here.... just gonna pop them on and hope that someone can help haha)

step1cutting.jpg
so here I cut everything out and had everything laid out according to where they were on pep pages....
I dont remember where I got my file from, the computer I printed it from completely died... I'll try to find link soon.

step2gluing.jpg
Here I just glued everything. I used superglue and tacky glue for the most part.
I kept everything stuck together by using tiny clothespins that came from a baby shower haha

step3sizecheck.jpg
When it was finally finished, I realized that it was too small to pull over my head. I still am not sure how to fix it, but I decided to cut out the back portion so I could slide the helmet over my face, then secure with magnets and an elastic hinge.

step4resin.jpg
This is the first coat of resin, first time ever working with it, and I managed to get drips of it all the way up to my elbows. Not pleasant. There is a lot of really nice symmetry except for the visor area, where one side is vertical and another is diagonal. I fixed that for the most part when I added fiberglass to the interior.

So I dont have any pics of the fiberglass, I will try to take some when I get home. Basically, I never worked with it before, and it dried with some small bubbles by the detailed parts. I drilled holes and filled it with resin, but it isnt completely filled...Not sure if I should be super thorough with filling it, or if the bondo will keep its shape once it dries. I don't want it cracking or anything, but I'm not exactly going to be wearing it into battle.

here are some videos of the fiberglass stages from my instagram page... (don't know how to embed...)

Instagram
first pass of fiberglass - super sharp edges and lots of bubbles

Instagram
some shaving of those sharp peaks with my dremel, and the second pass of fiberglass. one GIANT bubble remains, but I might fill it with epoxy....

Anyways, thats all I have now, any hints, tips, tricks from the masters would be appreciated ;)

So since I am on a budget, I don't have a lot of the tools I need at my disposal. Small update but I made a dressform last night haha

AH! This is going to be awesome. Not only do I greatly prefer FemShep, but the Breather Helmet is my favorite in the game. Looks like it's coming along quite well! Can't wait to see more!

Yes, I would love to see more progress on this! I'm just starting to do costuming and pep for the first time, and I'm following a similar path to you (doing helmet first, then working on femshep armor bits). The pep file I'm using for the helmet is a little more intricate than yours (which will probably end up being a mistake), and it's very intimidating. Seeing more progress would be very inspiring.

If you are still working on this, may I ask what version of the armor you are making? I've seen plenty of examples of ME2 femshep armor, but not as many ME3, and I have not come across any unfolded pep files for ME3 female N7 armor yet. So I'm attempting to unfold some with absolutely zero 3D experience. :/

I am also building the breather helmet and male Shep. Unfortunately I have had some problems with the mold and the cast (I want to pull several cast for different color schemes and degrees of battle damage) so I am going to start over with the mold using Smooth-On rebound 25 and Smooth cast 300. This is what I have so far uploadfromtaptalk1398192177574.jpg
