Farscape holster pics, and info needed,.

Ok, so I've wanted a holster for my Pulse pistol for a very long time now. I always figured I would go with a season 1-2 version, because I always thought it was so clever, and different, but after all the trouble I had painting my pistol, I don't really want to scuff the heck out of it, in one of those holster, so know I'm thinking of going with the season 3-4 version.

So, I would appreciate any info I can get on a season 3-4 holster. Like pics, makers. etc. etc. etc. I have a WTB thread for this over in the JY, but I thought I would ask for pics, and info here too, because if I end up have to make one, or have one made, I want to know what is accurate. (Or if I buy one, I want to make sure I get a good one, so pics will help.)

Well, if it helps at all, I found this...

http://images.google.com/imgres?img...es?q=farscape+pistol+holster&gbv=2&hl=en&sa=G

And on top of that, it features our own Matt Munson...

But I'm thinking you could probably get away with creating a "damn near close to the real thing" repro for I dunno, maybe around 30 bucks or so? as opposed to a same mold, same material, screen used and/or accurate holster fetching in the neighborhood of likely $200 plus (I'm guessing)...

I would suggest contacting Matt himself thru PM and find out what's what...

you should checkout the farscape props forum, im sure theres an old thread there pages long about this.

I'm a big fan of the FPF, and it's the first place I go for farscape prop info. I actually spent a good part of my day looking around over there, for info on this project. Unfortunately most of the pics were dead, and so where the threads. Most of the info was very old, and the people that used to make them, or had their own up for sale, no longer had anything for sale. So, that's way I came over to the good old RPF, because we have more people still poisting here, and they tend to have the latest info.

I finally broke down and bought a Katarra season 3/4 off ebay. It is quite nice.

I bid on the hero season one holster years ago, had a snipe bid in and would have won it. I forgot I had changed my password and didn't do it with the snipe service. I cried! The fellow in england who won it, promised me photos, but alas, I am still waiting.

To be honest, I've been looking at a Katarra , but it's just so different then the fan made ones I've seen out there. (in that it has more detail, etc. etc. I mean most fan made ones are very symmetrical, where as there version is't)So, I posted this thread to see if I could get some reference pics, to see if it's as accurate as I can get, or if I need to go in another direction.

If you don't mind me asking. Who is it on your pistol? I mean, the description says it's "leather over neoprene" so is the neoprene where the pistol sets, and if so, does it wear on the paint job. (Oh heck, and info on it would be great.) It really does look like a very nice piece, and it is nice to see someone still offering Farscape stuff.

I do know about the pattern bellow, and it would be cheaper to make it myself, but if I if it's way off, I dont' want to waste my time. (that and, it's only cheaper, if I get it right on the first try, or two, witch is rarely the case with me. :( )

Thanks so much for the pics. I for got how dark that show was, but after lightening them up, I got a pretty good look at that holster. I especially appreciate the pics from behind. I've never seen the back half of the holster before. Wall I still think the fan made (more symmetrical) kind of look "cooler", there is no doubt in my mind now that the Katarra is really quite accurate. So, I broke down and ordered one. :) I should have taken a crack at it myself, and I have no business spending that kind of money right now., but with an ever growing pile of unfinished props, and less, and less time to work on them, it will be kind of nice to have something really cool, come in the mail, ready to ware. Some times you just have to treat yourself to an impulse buy, or two. Right? (Ok, Ok, I do it way to often, but hey, I'm just happy I'm finally getting a holster for my Pulse pistol. :lol)

Sorry I didn't get pics up. JD did a great job with the caps.
You wont be sorry, I really like my Katarra holster. Now I need a decent winona to put in it.

What is the difference between winona, and the other pulse pistols? I've always wondered.

Nothing, it's just Crichton's pulse pistol. When you collect as many random cast off weapons as Moya's crew did finding one that works well reliably is important. :rolleyes

Ok, I finally got my Katarra holster today, and I have mixed feelings about it. It does look quite accurate over all, and the stitching, and over all construction is ok. (not great, but better then I could probably could do, so I have to give them props there.) However the materials used are AWFUL. (IMHO) It very, very, thin "leather" over neoprene, witch is a very cheapy feeling, thick , art foam, Styrofoam stuff. :( the straps are a cheap elastic material That will stretch out in no time. The buckles, are just cheep black plastic ones, instead of the dark chrome ones they had on the show. (but I kind of expected that part) And, the strap is secured in place, and can not be placed over the pistol, like it is in a few promo shots. (though it rarely, if ever is on the show, so that's kind of ok.) The materials it's made of are so cheep, that it it came out of the shipping box, already with a few small cresses, and bends, that shouldn't be there. Plus, to be honest, considering what it's made of, I think the price tag is quite high. I mean, I just put almost $150. in to about $20. of art foam, and um "leather".

So, on one hand, it is the most accurate I've seen, and at a distance, it looks outstanding, but one the other hand it feels like its made of air, and I've seen more trustable/sturdy items made by Rubies. (no offence to the maker, or others that have bout one. I mean, sadly, I really doubt I could do better.) So, I'll keep it for now, but I'm still on the look out for something a little more.......?sturdier?.....?hardier?....... um ?Substantial?

Or, if this is the sturdiest one out there, then maybe I'll open my self up to a season 1-2 verison holster.

So you have any pics, I was going to pick one up awhile ago, but never got around to it and lost interest, i've heard she does incredible work, I have one of here GB patches and its top notch. My favorite version is the season 1-2, and i've seen acouple done with enough carefully placed padding that the pistol doesent scratch or get all messed up

I'm sure her patches are great, because the a lot of the work on this is. My issue is with the materials. It's paper then "leather" (that looks, and smells like pleather, but hey it could be the real thing.) over really light wait foam. The foam shoes quite a bit through the cutouts, and is kind of a dark gray in color where it shows through. (you can see it better in some pics, then others.) and it's quite think, and un leather looking. (IMHO) I mean, this would be down right outstanding if it were made of a thicker leather, with no foam. (or at least heavier, more realistic stuff. ) On the other hand this could very well be what they did for the show. I don't know, I can't tell from the caps, but as far as a real world, costume piece it just feels very, very, cheep, for such a high price tag. (IMHO) I'm sorry, I really do hate to say such things about anyones hard work, but some folks around here, have a habbit, of saying everything is "perfect," "outstanding", and "great" even when it isn't, just to be nice, and I want people to konw exactly what they will be getting.

I'm very interested in hearing more about these season 1-2 holsters wtih all the padding. I always liked that version better, but I was woried about my paint just, but if that's not an issue, then that may be the way for me to go.

From the pics I can see what you mean, and I agree, the foam does really show through. i've seen one or two season 1 holsters with padding, its basicly just the vacuformed shell with a layer of foam covered in a soft material that fits "inside" where the gun will go. But I havent seen too many people offer the season 1-2 holster, i'd love to get my hands on one

:lol It's funny, but as soon as I got this in the mail, I thought of that one you made out of craft foam, and posted pics of on the Farscape props forums ,years ago. (very different, but the wait of this one, made me think of that. ) I should have saved myself $150. and just done one like that. :lol

yeah, i cant believe those vented areas are just cut out and not even sewn around to make the edges cleaner, thats really messy. And you can tell its cut by hand.

I could see that being $150 worth of time, there's definitely a lot of work put into it. It doesn't look like $150 worth of quality though. Thanks for the details pictures, they should help others make a decision in the future.

Yeah. I mean, we're all grown ups here. (for the most part) and I'm not telling anyone not to get one of these, I'm just putting the facts out there from my own point of view. I mean, this might be just right for someone. It might be better then what they have. I'm just saying I personally found it very disappointing. And, I'm the first to admit I'm very, very cheep, so most things are over priced in my mind, but this just doesn't seem worth that much for me. (even setting aside my cheepness.) And, though I don't think if really shows in the actions pics, it is listed as being "Leather over Neoprene" so it's not like it's advertised as being 100% leather. (I just though it would be more leather, then neoprene, and not the other way around. :( ) It is clear to me, that hte parson tried pretty hard to get it "right". I mean, she really did here home word on the over all look of it. Yes some of the cuts aren't that strait, and there is some excess glue here, and there, and all the other stuff I've complained about, but hey, I'm picky. Some folks don't want a heavy leather holster. (I guess)

I run in to this a lot around here, and on ebay. I buy something on an impulse, and it more often then not leads to disappoint mint, but that leads me to do more research, and then buy, or make one I am more happy with. :) So in the end, it's all part of the (kind of unfortunate) journey.

Though, I wish my local leather shop was still doing there holster making class. for about what I spent on this I could have took the class, with the supplies, and learned to make my own. (and then I could have sold them, and made money. :) ) Oh well, it's not like I hade the time for another poject right now, anyways.

and yeah, have fun with the pics, there not great, but everyone is welcome to them. Feel free to save them off, post them elsewhere. etc. that's why i posted them. :)
