Are you always this rude? First you question the size, then the price, and then whether or not you'll slice yourself on it.
Of course it doesn't have an edge to cut yourself with, it's a piece of laboratory glass used to capture condensation from a test tube. I used it as a lens in my own project and posted a photo.

Rude and Crude vacu-forming lens test - I used 0.08" acrylic sheeting ('cause I had a piece laying around); the box still has wet glue - no target dimensions, other than a 3" hole on top; I clamped the plastic to the top using a scrap piece of pywood with an over sized hole in it; then I used an old heat gun to soften the plastic and turned on the vacuum cleaner. Not perfect, but certainly the right direction. The excess can be cut down to form a lip to hold it to the back of the faceplate. First fitting looks good.

Here is a paint sample I tried...I think it gets close to the original "pattern" even if the colors are off. The original looks like one of those faux finishes that no one can explain what finish they are fauxing.:confused
If you want to try, I started with a Leather Brown Rust Oleum and went over it after it had dried with a Black Night Metallic Rust Oleum that I immediatly dabbed at randomly with a balled up piece of plastic wrap.
Maybe someone can come up with a better available color combination.
Again, I don't know what this finish is supposed to represent, but I'll bet they didn't either and that is why they went with a more even brown on later versions.

Juno, I wouldn't take it as a beat down. The beauty of this thread is it's been fast, furious and ultracollaborative. I think it's been in good spirits.
I ordered two of your 80mm bad boys, and at $1.20 a pop I think I can afford to be wrong.

nothing new on the faceplates, was expecting an update today, but nothing so far...
in other news, i noticed something interesting here... looks like there are a few paintchips on both halves revealing (drumb roll) A SILVER CASE beneath! Though its odd because the lip around the right is still gold..might all be a trick of light.

I have always thought that that was the microphone.
The round grill is the speaker.
The wave lines around the Lens are not through slots, just part of the logo so the only thing left for the mic is the small rectangle.

Do you know, I think you're right. The edge around the screen looks like brass paint over aluminum, that's been chipped away by the lid.

I'm going to try tomorrow with some thinner plastic and clamp it down better all around the edges to get a more uniform curvature. If I can get some printed circuit board etch solution, I am going to try the logo on the brass plate. Apparently, you can print a reversed, inverted image on the backing paper for laser print labels and iron the toner onto the metal to be etched! Well, it is a thermo plastic toner. This is supposed to block the etching and still give good enough detail for circuit boards, so it should be good enough for the logo and the cresents around the lens. The speaker cut-out is going to be a toughie to do by hand - I still am looking for something a little higher-tech in the area.
