Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

or the same jacks without the nuts on them?

Could be...The hole definitely looks bigger though.
Either way, it looks like a variation .

As for the silver showing through, you think it might be the gold chipping off of the original paint job?

Excellent caps of the Tesla gun. The whitish look at the top of the tubes is what you get when the tube burns out of the glass is broken. A metalized coating oxidizes.

It still looks about 9"?

yeah the few tubes i have here are all silver on the ends, was curious how they end up white.

I tried that crunched up paper bag technique for the painjob and i think its spot on, definetly looks like the same patterns on the prop.

havent looked at the gun long enough to figure out a length, but its definetly a small gun, wouldnt be surprised if its 7-8 inches.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I painted it gloss brown first (The color was actually "espresso").
After dried (Make sure it's completely dry to the touch...No stickiness)I lightly used steel wool to dull it up, and then buffed it to get a semi/gloss look.

THen I used a Reneaissance Brown metallic glaze which I picked up at Michael's arts and crafts ("Elegant Finish - Renaissance Brown DGM01).
Sponged on the glaze, let it dry, then used steel wool to smooth it out, and then buffed it again.

is that glaze basically craft acrylic paint?

Sorry if I took umbrage -- I just felt like I was getting questioned like I didn't know what I was talking about. Call it a girl thing! :lol

Looking at those other photos I do think whomever mentioned that it was a tap light lens is probably right.

That was my first guess during my initial research .....I looked through many brands but wasn't able to find one that was the correct size and style.

It may still be out there though.

Not too bad. You might try seeing what the cresents/chevrons look like if you back them with a piece of scrap brass. It won't be 100%, but it has a similar effect.

Why the difference in price between brass and aluminum? Hardness of the metal?

How clean are the cuts? The close-up has a slight ragged edge look - is that just the picture?

Aside from the chevrons, it looks good.

Kylash, you might want to take notice of the pin holes...They look too big.
The head of the pin might slide right through.

If it significanly saves valuable machine time and money, the holes for the pins, red lights, and knobs would be relatively simple for the DIYer to do. The 3" hole, speaker grill, chevron, logo, and etched dial would be nice to have professionally made. I'm most interested in brass.

Great progress on the plates!

I have two news updates: I received my center knob (in black) and I made a mold off it last night. Later today when I get a chance I will pull some casts in brown for anyone who is interested.

Speaking of this knob... since this knob does not actually have a post on it what are we using to attach it to and then thread through the plate hole?

I also found some tap lights in the correct size (or so I think) I ordered a couple to verify the size etc but they look spot on for both the lens curve and the depth coming up through the plate. Fingers crossed!

What are the dims for the plate?? (length x width). I have an idea for the faceplate, but I need some numbers. I know there are in the thread somewhere, but I can't seem to find them in among all the other great info.

And you all agree that the number dial is recessed, and the numbers themselves are again recessed??

Has anyone put a total cost list together?? Minus the faceplate, of course.
