Farnsworth Discussion

Hi everyone. New here.
I really want to make a farnsworth but living in ireland its kind of difficult to get a hold of all the parts. Im able to get the case (i found one on ebay for 15 euro exactly the same only 5mm bigger in width) so if anyone out there has spare parts ie knobs crystal red indicator I would love to buy them of. I looked through all the websites at the start of this thread but the shipping costs are outragious!

I bought the 300 second module from Electronics124 and got it to work with three different rates of silence before the ringtone goes off. Now it wont' work at all. I've traded out the batteries. The only it works now, although no sound is when I have it plugged into the USB port of my computer. Anyone else had issues with the sound module?

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed but I have a question about the faceplate installation. The rectangular cut out under the lens. Does something go under there between the plate and case or does it just stay as an open cut out?

The QMX version has a piece of black fabric glued behind the faceplate to cover the hole and make it look like a speaker/microphone.

A piece of thin black felt works well too.

Thought it was about time to share the progress of my build.
About all I've got left to do is change the colour of the centre knob :)

Did a test fitting of my push button, red lens, and faceplate today. I'll definitely be redoing the paint job before I reassemble everything.

The chipping on the paint may be that you did not prime your box. The primer help the paint adhere to the metal. Without it the paint will continue to chip. One should clean, prime and then piant your box. Even with primer the hinge will chip. The ones on the show chip at the hinge. I hope this helps.

Got a painting question. It's always seemed to me, that the outside has some sort of texture to it, so I just got a can of Rustoleum Textured in chocolate brown & a can of Krylon coffee in satin for highlights. The plan is primer, brown, coffee, 0000 grit steel wool, then repeat the 2 paints & steel wool 3 times.

I of one that has done the plastic wrap for the highlights, & the QMx has hand painted highlights, so just wondering if anyone has tried the texturing route?

Looks like I'm returning some paint.:thumbsup Thanks for the help guys. NMR, I've spent a lot of time searching your posts on the Farnsworth, so thanks for chiming in.

I was going to do some tests today on some plate metal, but the weather here is cold & rainy. My parts are still with the seller, My sound module hasn't shipped yet, & my 4-position switch is coming from HK (always check seller location before clicking 'Buy It Now').

I really don't want to lose my momentum or excitement, so I guess I'll make my crate today & try to work out a stencil for the top. I'm probably going with a 'WH 13' as opposed to the full word.

Another way to texture it is to just hit it with two different brands of paint before the first coating is dry... you will get a nice crinkle effect.

Has anyone ever tried to use one of the chinese fly boxes on ebay? They are aluminum and the dimensions appear to be identical. Wondering if the shape is right and the faceplace plate fits?
