Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

It all looks really good.

I noticed the milling marks in the recessed area are still a bit visible. I wonder if a light sand with fine wet and dry first will take them out.

they dont bother me, and im past going back and doing that nowm the weathering wouldnt match the rest if i redid that entire area. Besides, the turn dial will cover most of it.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

if you use the weathering method i described above, be sure to seal it with a gloss or satin clearcoat, i started getting fingerprints in the weathering that wont rub off without taking the weathering off. FYI!

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

No!!! Leave the fingerprints!!!!

That just means that you got attacked by the Electric Spine Monster from "Burnout" while you were holding the Farnsworth!!

I took the worst plate for myself, you can still see chatter marks in mine. I used wet/dry sand paper & polishing wheel to clean mine up. As Kylash says you need to do it before aging.

That look great Kylash!

If you don't mind, I have a few questions-
How did you afix the face plate to the case? Did you leave the silver foil backing on the small lens? What electronics do you have planned?

I'll try and post som pix of the state of my Farnsworth early next week.

Thanks again to all the detectives who figured this prop out!

Okay ... don't suppose anyone will be making up full kits of these?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Hi, I know I'm more than a little late to the party but I've been a fan of Warehouse 13 since the beginning. My mom has been on me to make her a Farnsworth since we watched the first episode. I've never made a prop like this before and the prospect of trying to figure it all out myself was a little too daunting. I'm the kinda person that if I can't make it exact, I won't even do it. The one thing that I haven't the foggiest how to do is the panel with the etching. But I suppose I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. You guys have done amazing jobs! From the leg work of finding all the right pieces to the craftsmanship of the build. I read through half the pages in this thread til I realized it's nearly 4am, so I better get. But I plan on building my own Farnsworth and charting my progress here. You guys have posted some much of the build and yours have turned out amazing, I hope mine doesn't turn out looking like junk. hehe. Any tips or pointers you guys could give me along the way, (especially if you see me messing something up) would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks!
Jessica

The pushbutton is the hardest thing to find. The manufacturer won't sell them and their distributors only sell them by the hundereds.

I don't think we ever found a place to just buy 1 or 2 did we?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

not unles you bought one of those big tester things and pulled them out

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

If all else fails with finding pushbuttons one could use a 1/4" (6.5mm) phone socket for the right size and make a "button" from scratch from a piece of black plastic rod. It might even be possible to make it movable like a pushbutton though it would not be a functional switch. It would look fine on a static prop and not be hard to do.

I've had no luck finding the correct switch locally so was thinking I'd have to use some similar switch and make the button myself anyway.

It's a shame that the larger metal pushbutton switches used in guitar effects pedals are just way too long to fit behind the panel in this. They are about the right size otherwise and the metal button would be easy enough to paint black.

the faceplate isnt really "affixed" right now, just friction holding it on. But once i get the innards all finalized, ill pribably use magnets.

Yeah I thought about using a couple of those strong little neodymium rare earth (NdFeB) magnets to keep it in place. Very useful things.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

The electronics will be this hooked up to the pushbutton using a mp3 of the ringing sound and probably a larger LED:

These are also available from the same company on eBay just in case someone is interested.

I have to see if my idea of a 3.5" digital photo frame is going pan out. It just might not fit as I'll need to mask the rectangular screen to a circle and possibly also fit a magnifying glass or Fresnel lens behind the domed "lens" we have now to get that fisheye effect. I have a couple of the Wheatley boxes and one of them is a bit deeper so it might be enough.

If it doesn't fit or just looks rubbish I'll more likely go with a sound module and static image printed onto overheard projection film or other clear film which I'll try to curve and backlight (or use the magnifying lens idea).

Is there info on them? I'm up for going after them via a distributor or manufacturer that buys a lot of stuff like this.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

well they are from the B&K 400 Cathode Ray tester, not sure if that helps.
