Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I'm pretty sure Siffy hasn't announced any DVD dates. Might be worth asking them on Twitter to see if they can dig one up to announce.

This is my first RPF post so it's appropriate it be about my first proper replica prop (from something live-action). Have to get on acquiring my bits for this, looking forward to it. I could make my own faceplate (time I learned to do etching properly), but the details are done so nicely already I'd rather have the ones being produced.

So if there is still going to be a second order, I'd like to join! You can indeed buy brass sheeting at Ace Hardware, or places like Hobby Town USA but pretty sure it's cheaper at Ace. For this size item you might be able to get two plates out of one piece, I'd have to dig one out and measure it.

HEY KYLASH s'up. :)

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I thought about using one of these digital photo frames in the Farnsworth. I got one on ebay really cheaply.

I have measured the screen and surround against the clear lenses supplied by JH and it might just fit especially with its casing removed. It would have to be rotated and any photos rotated as well. Images are stored on an SD card. It has a rechargeable battery and line out but not sure if music can be played at the same time as photo slideshow. I expect not but as soon as I get home from the hospital I will find out.

That's what I'm attempting... I got this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260551467788

Has a 3.5" screen, so it fills the lens one direction, leaves about a 1/4" exposed on the left/rt, and the whole thing (screen and circuit board) _just_ fit inside the case, with a built-in battery. I'm thinking I can just add some white paper or something and hopefully it won't look too bad. Or I might try adding a fresnel lens to it to enlarge the image... It's hard to find square LCD panels. :rolleyes

The cool thing about this particular photo album (besides only being about $15) is that it plays video with sound (head phones). It doesn't have the nicest LCD in it, but I figure that will work perfectly as a Farnsworth display... My plan is to try to capture a shot or two from the show and have it play back on the screen with audio. It has a couple of controls that would have to be pressed to make it play back video from power up, so I'm trying to decide how I want to do that...

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I'm talking to a local shop about fabricating the faceplate. Cost dependant I'll let everyone know what I end up with.

EDIT: Got the quote from the engraver and I'm really happy. We're working to get the machining quote to finish it off. Stay tuned.

I thought i would show the weathering i did on the faceplate from Kylash. At first i just kept wetting the plate and letting it dry while sitting flat. Did that for about 3 days. Then i started soaking it in a tray of water with a rusty piece of steel wool. This seems to work better and quicker. I did this for another 3 days. It's getting a nice purplish tint at curtain angles and less so at others. It's also statring to get some 'rusty' splotches. I think I will continue for a few more days. I'm pretty happy so far. I really wanted a natural weathering. What do you think so far?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Found some AB potentiometers in my stash that are the same height as the switch. I cut one of the shafts down, made a bushing and clearanced the knob inside. It fits nice and low and fuctions. Also found a neat little microphone that i will fill the grill hole with. What color are you guys using to paint your center knob?

I'm still waiting for Allied electric to get more red lenses in so i stuck in a yellow for now.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Great video. XD I rated it at a 5 XD

Anyway, I think I have a solution for your screen back light.

All you need, is the lens for the screen, and behind it, put translucent white plastic diffuser to spread the light out for a nice glow effect

For a static picture one could copy an image onto translucent sheet then use a piece of electroluminescent sheeting to backlight it. This EL sheeting is commonly used to illuminate the inside of spaceship models.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I think a rotary switch would be better for the middle knob than a potentiometer.

Actually I think it would be better the other way around. Have the rotary switch (for whatever reason) on the left and the pot in the middle. I say that because it's the middle one that has the numbers around it. It's less likely the steps in teh switch would match the number positions.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

a few more from dr_slurpee.
The more i see those rivets on the front, the more they look like the prop people may have done them, they just dont look evenly spaced or cleanly inserted.

They are definitely original Wheatley rivets. Various boxes have different inserts in them for holding different kinds of flies. The little rivets are used to hold some of the inserts. The foam inserts are just glued in but the metal hooks are riveted.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

As for the rivet in the middle....I watched the episode on demand last night, it looks like the middle rivet is just an impression in the paint.

Some versions of the Wheatley boxes actually have a little rivet in the middle of the back. It depends on the insert.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I think it's a horn switch. They tend to be shallower. Do a web search and you'll see.

Since I can't find the exact switch locally, I'm thinking of getting a switch that is close and then making a new button for it in the correct size. At least a button is easy to make. A piece of round plastic stock cut to a suitable length and sanded down and drill a hole for the shaft.

I found the correct button here but I think they are all sold out. The one I found is a normally closed switch not a momenteraly contact switch. Mark

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Hiya

Was there meant to be a link in that post?

Peter
Peter Not meant to be a link. Just imformation, if you are looking for a Monentary contact switch and isn't made you can't find it. So you may have to look for both normally close and monmentary contact.
Sorry about the confussion

NP. I just wondered because you said "I found the correct button here but I think they are all sold out." I assumed the "here" referred to a particular website. I have not limited my searches to momentary or any other kind, just pushbutton switches. I don't care what sort of switch it is really as it may not end up being functional on either unit I build. I expect one of them is going to be a static prop while I will try to make one somewhat functional.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Hi all. Just wondering if a new run is on the cards. If so please could you put me down for one. Cheers

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Hello. I am starting to pick up some parts hear and there. Ordered the one black knob, found another part at a local electronics store, etc. I did not buy a couple pieces due the the crazy shipping and handling fees.

I think I found a cheap crystal with FREE US shipping! It is at artbeads.com. The model number is below. It looks the same! I just ordered them so I don't know how they are in person.

Product code; GCRD-FCRY15 15mm round glass Cabochon-foiled crystal.

I got a couple extra if anyone wants to trade for a red light indicator???
