So far I see very few with the earphone-sockets on the side -- deliberate choice?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

no, just havent got the parts yet.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

few pics of my farnsworth updated with jhusel's AMAZING screen piece. This one i painted the back with primer, and i have a clear one for whenever i get around to having a lighted transparency of Artie talking.

Man, you really nailed this one; nicely done!

Could you post a pic of the inside aspect of the faceplate...I'm having a tough time achieving a low profiile fit due to the size of the switches...and especially the momentary switch...where did you get that one? Every type I have looked at is either too tall or too skinny, and I would like to keep at least one of them functional for use with my sound board.

Thanks again for all you have done to make this build possible!

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

sure, here you go. The momentary switch is from one of those control boxes pictures in the thread. The middle button is just glued for now, but i plan on making it turn like the other. I just have it all hot glued for now since i plan on using the same parts when i get a newer plate whenever we can get the next run done.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I see...was wondering how you got the left & center knobs so flush. I can't quite make out what you did to the left knob to make it turn...but it looks clever.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Well, thanks to the generosity of someone here on site i was able to get a hold of an extra face plate from the first run. Now, I had tried several of the methods of vinegar and salt for aging but I never got the look I wanted on the face plate. I had noticed that on some of the screen caps we had seen on page one of this thread a more dark and used look, so I decided to go back to my old standby of Gun Blue. This is what I got:

so, what do you all think? :D

I think it looks great! Is that normal cold blue or something else?

Pretty much just the normal cold blue. I just picked up the Perma Blue at Wal*Mart there Xd Nice thing is that if you do it right it won't go black or turn the brass blue or anything, just this really nice brown color. After that i just washed it and handled it to get the wear spots to look right. tiny bit of scouring powder really helps with that.

Best thing to do it put down a plastic bag, place the plate face down and use a toothbrush to apply the blue to the BACK of the plate. It will run over to the front and make a nice flat brown mess of it. after that it's just a question as to how much and indeed how you rub the finish away to get a nice worn, used, aged look to the piece.

wow that looks really nice, especially near the number dial.

Small update on the second run of plates:

"I've got a meeting with the owner of another machine shop locally thats alot smaller and doesn't do many large orders so this guy might be right up my alley. The only draw back is I have to find my own material as he doesn't do any special ordering on materials but I think I can find brass sheeting."

Thanks Kylash! ^_^ Yeah I really wanted all those details to stand out a bit.

As for the materials, that shouldn't be a problem. I believe Ace carries brass sheets in the same thickness at like three or four dollars a piece and in nearly the same dimensions too. some of the other hardware stores like truevalue and such do as well.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Been meaning to put this pic up -- still a few tweaks to do, but this is the mostly-finished result (faceplate and lens from the respective threads!). The knobs both turn.

Thanks! Yeah, I've got a sound circuit with a blinking light to go under the red dome. I've already installed the speaker under the grille. I'll put the circuit in after I finish the rest of the tweaks.

I plan to at the very least put a light in. Depending on what my options are I may put a sound board and speaker or maybe, a walkie talkie. You can get some cheap childrens models that would be fun and hey, if i build two I can put the other ones guts in the other Farnsworth XD

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I did finally get a couple of boxes at reasonable cost and shipping on ebay. They differ slightly in depth and are going to need painting to get the colour right. I just couldn't find any brass or gold coloured ones at a good cost and shipping that didn't break the bank. Sometimes shipping of even small items to OZ can kill a project. Not got faceplate at all yet. May have to source something locally.
