Farnsworth Discussion

Procrastination has become something of an artform, and as such my own farnsworth is only slowly getting along. I'm wondering if anyone could post a pic of Artie suitable for use inside the viewscreen? Google images has not been overly forthcoming.

And while I'm at it, is anyone selling faceplates?

Thank you PeterLC, Interceptor6 and Division 6 for your kind words (and E you are most welcome.) It was a fun project but not w/o a few struggles. As always a labor of love prevails. :cool

... one last art-house snap. The wrapping and bag courtesy of Division 6 ;)

PS. wanted to say nice job with the discreet-Farnsworth and 'Philo' concepts from Zombie Killer and PeterLC - very cleaver ideas and nicely done builds from you both. Maybe SyFy can sneek them into the new season.

Thanks Mac. ZK always does nice work. I muddle along. I have thought of trying to do a mini-Farnsworth using one of the smaller Wheatley boxes.

I've been in hospital for a while (months) so no prop fun for me. I look forward to being able to get home and finish a lot of stuff.

My QMx Farnsworh turned up at home and I haven't even seen it yet. Sigh.

My wife found the purple gloves in hair dyeing acessories in a beauty supply store. There were at least 3 pairs of purple.

What is everyone using to age the brass plate? I've used black paint kind of stippled on and wiped off. I want to try a different look like the one above. Any help is appreciated.

I used a sealed container with amonia and hung the faceplate above the liquid in the fumes.

Initially I used liver of Sulfur but it only made it orange and splotchy so I then hand painted on black in the recessed areas then removed most of the surface paint then air brushed it with Model Masters burnt umber and black.

Ack, so close and yet so far. Hope you're out of hospital soon and back home to enjoy your new toys.

Thanks! I'll try it. How did you cut out the speaker grill? Did you burn it all the way through? I also thought of cutting the number dial circle out completely and then putting a piece of plate behind it with the numbers to give it the recessed look.

I was thinking that might be a good approach too! Are you doing the laser-printer etching thing?

Yes. The process is easy. It's just getting the paper off the toner clean. The laser printer I have access to isn't printing densely enough so I'm getting tiny spots which actually add to the aged look of it. I think the proper way to do this is to burn the speaker all the way through with the rest masked off. Then burn the middle numbered dial circle area half way, and then add the rest of the etching. That's really a three burn process. Once you get the etchant and the plate, it's a matter of just submerging it and swishing it around and gently wiping it so that you let new etchant hit the engraved places.

It's been a while since I've been on the thread but thought I'd post a photo of my finished Farnsworth. The plate still isn't secured but it does seem to fit in snugly. I'll probably opt for using magnets to hold it in place eventually.

For my lense, I used a battery operated spotlight but I still would love a clear lense, so I can place a lit picture of Pete etc, behind it. I found a child's nightlight similar to one seen on the thread but unfortunately the 'character pic' cannot be removed from the inside of the clear lense :(......so, if anyone has a spare clear plastic lense, I'd really appreciate it. The only electronics in it so far is the red led light, activated by the right hand button. I still want to weather the faceplate to give it the right look but haven't attempted this so far.

Hope you like mine...

Nice work Chris.

As an aside note, SyFy now has Season 3 Episodes 1-7 on line now so for those without cable (like me) it's an opportunity to catch up. (also on Hulu)
