Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Just a point of clarification; this thread was never shut down or locked. When the C&D was received by those of us directly involved the "objectionable" content (posts) were removed and the thread redirected to specifically address research only. This was to avoid a lock or removal of the thread and its valuable research.

This thread got shut down once because of talk of making and selling plates. I would recomend you guys keep that stuff out of the thread. There has been a C&D issued once already for the sale of plates.

Not only was the thread shut down but a whole new thread was started. I remember reposting all the pics i had saved. Then the old thread was unlocked and both threads were sort of merged. Go back to around post 914. That was were the merged happened.

A new thread was started for the Claudias Farnsworth build. Posts containing and reference the sale of items were removed and the thread was redirected to research only. You do remember that kylash and I were the ones who got the C&D right? I think I know a bit about it. :rolleyes

Also the fab of other props from the show were split into their separate thread as well.

Re: Warehouse 13 Farnsworth Research Thread

I have the complete old thread archived. I'll see what I can dig up.

There's a chance that the original thread may be restored for archiving, so I'm going to hold off on adding any more historical for now.

That would be good since there is about a years worth of research in there.

Just to clarify. I haven't done squat as far as researching or building a Farnsworth. I simply restarted a killed thread. All the kudos go to the many others on here that have done all this great work.

BTW, I have done similar work outside the movie industry, and while $4000 each may be on the high side, it is within reason. Heck, depending on who had final approval of the design, the propmaster may have taken the time to draw up dozens ideas before producing an actual piece.

[Professor Farnsworth voice]Good news everyone![/Professor Farnsworth voice]

The original thread has been restored and merged with the new one (with just a few edits).

Please remember that QMX has the Warehouse 13 license, and this thread is strictly for research and discussion purposes only. This thread is not for the sale of replicas, so please do not ask to buy a Farnsworth in this thread.

Really?

Actually.... The entire thread was removed at one point. With Kylash's permission, I restarted it using info from google cache pages. A short time later, and at K's request the old thread was brought back, cleaned up and merged with this one.

(as pointed out above by ZK)

Well hope your ego feels better Zk youre right. It must have happened in a day cuz I was on non-stop at that time and don't remember the thread ever missing or even locked. The important thing is the research wasn't lost thanks to GG.

Regardless there are some great builds and Ive gotten some nice PMs regarding peoples builds. It's good to see cast members signing these great replicas. I hate that I sold off my own but at the time the order came down I didn't want anything around.

Ego? I was minding my own business untill you called me out on a comment i made and i defended it. Back to the farnsworth.....

Nice idea with the Altoids Farnsworth!

It's too bad we've not seen anymore of the phone/comm device that Leena was seen using at the end of the season. I thought it might turn out to be some flavor of a Farnsworth... oh well.

I did a cigarette case mini-Farnsworth called a "Philo". I didn't shrink down an exact copy but changed the design of the faceplate a little. I only have some photos of it partially done though it is almost finished. I can't work on anything right now.

The red LED in the middle has a larger darker LED lens over the top of it now and there are two small knobs at the bottom plus a very small green power light at the top. The "lid" is lined with velvet. I'll take a finished photo when I can.

The cigarette case was one of these

That looks cool. I was at the dump the other day and they had an old scanner there and the lights on it looked like the farns light so i grabbed it. The lights are around 60% and so is the altoids box. I found a switch and side jacks around the same 60%. The hard thing was finding knobs. I modded a couple old car radio knobs. I'm just going to print out the faceplate details on some sticky stuff and drill the holes in the right spots and glue it down. More of a fun project than anything.

I got my electronics put in this weekend and i must say it's awesome to have a Farnsworth that actually does something. Next i need to tackle the dreaded faceplate so i can get rid of the cheap wooden one. Ugh...

That is very, very cool! I've been thinking about making one and putting electronics in it with sound using the Wave shield (I use them all the time.) Since I want to put in a EL panel to light it up I figured I would have to do all the electronics on a single board w/ a micro SD card in order to make it fit with the EL inverter. Since the inverter measures 1" x .5" x .25" maybe there's a very small chance I could get it all to fit in there using a full size Wave shield but I doubt it...

I forgot to add my sfx files and tell you how to add your own audio files in the sketch. From the code below you can see it's just two simple arrays; one for sound effects and another for audio clips. The sound effects array shouldn't be modified but you can add as many audio clips to the scFile array as you want. I only have one audio clip (1artie1.wav) that is partially completed but when I get more I'll upload them.

BTW - Sorry for the sloppy code but I haven't had a chance to refine it yet.

Code:
char* fxFile[]={"0ring2.wav", "0bon.wav", "0boff.wav", "0tup2b.wav", "0tdn2.wav", "0soff.wav", "0sr4.wav"}; //Sound effects files
char* scFile[]={"1WH13.WAV", "2WH13.WAV", "3WH13.WAV", "4WH13.WAV", "5WH13.WAV", "6WH13.WAV", "7WH13.wav"}; //Sound clip files

Yeah the "Philo" was just a fun thing too. I had the cigarette cases in my junk box and I had a lightbulb moment. I made the brass faceplate with a Dremel and will do the legends with Letraset I think rather than etch anything. The screen was from an LED push light. The knobs which aren't in the photo are made from computer case thumbscrews and washers.

Hi All,

I finally finished my Farnsworth after one failed attempt last year and with copious help from Division 6 - thanks E for aging the faceplate, doing the center knob, buying up the missing parts I needed and for all your emails and suggestions and encouragement - could not have done it without you!!

I was not as happy with the espresso paint color, so I used that as a base coat, then the metalic glaze and I finally used a lighter brown to finish it off. I maybe went a bit overboard on the weathering but I think it came out rather nicely. Nicked the case with my dremel once, but I chocked it up to aging the box.

Thanks also to the RPF & its members who contributed to this thread and project for all your research and suggestions. It was fun.

Now I gotta figure out the electronics. :rolleyes
