Farnsworth Discussion

QMx just released a Farnsworth iPhone/iPod App today!!!!

It is a Farnsworth you can actually talk on and send messages!!! It uses the built in camera to record you, and they even have 2 messages from Artie and Claudia!!

Farnsworth Video Communicator for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G on the iTunes App Store

I've gotten the bug to build one of these. Actually I caught the bug from my niece, she really wants a Farnsworth, as only a teenager can.

Got the case, picked up most of the parts (Thanks Serenity for the clear bits, and the brass tacks!) got the brass, printed out a sample mask, picked up some oil based sharpies (to touch up the mask) Oh, and I have the sound modules loaded and ready.

After I pick up some grounding wire and root clear I'll be all set to make the plates.

Senjak

Oh, and here is a picture of most of the bits together....

LOL I made this suggestion last year!! Glad QMX listened to me! Excuse me while I download.

I kind of take umberage at thier excuse for not having an android release.

Not powerful enough? C'mon. My droid x from a year and a half ago is powerful enough to handle a video call.

Picked most of the remaining supplies this weekend, including a baking pan from a garage sale. Had a bit of a giggle as I read the label for the "Root Away", declaring it a federal crime to use the product in a manner not listed on the packaging.

Since pass one involves etching both sides of the plate, I picked up cheap Glossy photo paper for ink-jets ($10 for 20 sheets) and laser printable overheads (from Kinko's, $0.75 each, and they were willing to sell me 10 of them)

Oh, I'm using a laser printer, the ink-jet paper is suppose to transfer a laser print better than laser paper.

Additionally I picked up a couple of dense wood boards (intended for steps?) at Home Despot to put under the brass plate when I'm ironing the artwork onto the brass.

Also picked up a set of alligator clips with wire from Radio Shack, and some aluminum wire.

And I ordered the last of the dials this afternoon. Ordered 3x what I need, cause there is grinding involved. Wiggle room for messing it up.

Feel like I should fire up the grill and invite a bunch of people over for a grill and etch potluck some weekend.

Try glossy magazine pages, results will vary by magazine but they generally release the toner better than most regular uncoated papers when you are doing toner etching transfers...

Actually I think they mentioned the inconsistency of the hardware and that some Android phones did not have cameras and some other stuff. OK too bad for them. Many many Android phones have more than enough power and the other hardware necessary to run this app just fine. My Samsung Galaxy S2 is more powerful than an iPhone and has a better camera for a start. It's a phone designed to do video calling. Hopefully they'll do an Android version sooner rather than later and some people will just have to put up with some functions not working. Nothing including this app and a Star Trek Padd app would induce me to buy an iPhone. I have a couple of Tricorder apps for the Galaxy though.

C'mon QMx do it now!

broke out the iron tonight. The transparency plastic came right off, no issues other than problems related to finger grease. happy finger grease.

The paper on the other hand, is really annoying. Baked right on to the metal. I'll see if it comes free, otherwise I'll have to wipe this one and start over.

I've soaked it for around 2 days, and I still can't get the film all the way off. On the other hand, With a touch up via oil based sharpie, the plastic method seems to work well. I'm going to give a go at just using plastic and sharpies.

Okay, I'm way behind on the discussion here, and I'm intrigued by the talk of etching, baking on prints, et al. How far back and I going to have to go to get in on what's going on? My daughter ordered one of the brass faceplates early on, so she's got her Farnsworth working and looking awesome. I wanted to do a build, but didn't want to spend as much on the case and faceplate, so I'm open to ideas.

Oh, one big gripe here, and I hope the person is not a member/friend/cousin whatever...but there is a person (guy/gal?) online and on ebay selling a 'fake' Wheatley case, the right size and much cheaper. I was really happy to find this source, but when i followed through to order, I got an email saying they'd contact me w/ postage amts and I could put in payment amount. I sent an email asking about postage options, as I wanted the box for an even on Nov. 18th. I got a snarky email in bold print that just say, 'GO ELSEWHERE'!!! I've had a couple of back and forths, asking why the 'jerk' attitude, and was even told 'if you needed it so badly, why not just get a Wheatley case locally?'. *duh* I didn't think of that....right!? Very bad customer service. I was planning on ordering from them anyway, since it was so cheap, but I just wanted to know if their's would arrive in time, cuz if not, I'd keep looking (elsewhere) for my immediate need.

Anyway, the person's name is BoBo...if you are here or know this person, please know that you do not do the proverbial 'look a gift horse in the mouth'...or basically 'cut off your nose to spite your face'. YOU LOST MONEY!! *using their all caps method of emailing*. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Now, it looks like I won't be able to even throw together a simple Farnsworth for Creation in LA. *pout*

I can just order another Wheatley case from the UK later.

BUT, I still need help w/ the faceplate, so any links to 'how to', please, pass them on!!

thanks all!

Suzi

If you rea dback, I posted a link to a us supplier of aluminum cases for about $13 shipped. Ya can't beat that, and once painted up, they look great.
