Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Hey all. Noob here :lol. Just joined the RPF but wanted to post here first (after the intro thread) since this is the thread that sucked me in! Great job :thumbsup.

Missed out on the brass face plate run this time around :cry, but maybe next time.

Hi NN,

That's the same reason I joined this forum as well.

There is an OVERFLOW listing for the faceplate: **Warehouse 13 Farnsworth Brass Faceplates**

Great soundfile...thanks! I found this gadget at:

http://www.electronics123.com/s.nl/it.A/id.2841/.f?sc=8&category=2

I loaded the file on it via a USB connection using software from the site.
It sounds good, its cheap, it fits in the Wheatley box with room to spare, and plays the ringtone in a loop when the switch is pressed.

The components can be removed from their paper card backing and arranged in the Wheatley box...for example, the red flashing LED (it flashes while the ringing sound is playing) can be centered under the red dome.

I'm trying to figure out how to initiate the ring while the Farnsworth is closed and enable the pushbutton switch to stop the ring.

Here is something I found on teh interweb that could be useful in building a Farnsworth.

http://www.wildzero.de/pics/WH13_farnsworth_ringtone.mp3

It's the main ringtone on my cell phone at the moment. I love that tinny sound :love

Could you rig something like the TOS Communicator toy? You push the center button, close the lid, and a couple seconds later the 'hailing' beep plays until you flip it open.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Does anyone know the part number for the brass case? Thanks in advance!

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Does anyone have an in stock source for the 201 switch?
The places I've looked at are either out of stock or you have to send a request for a quote.:unsure

I'm thinking of two possibilities:
(Bear in mind I am not very good with circuitry by any means)

1) Modify one of the two jacks on the side so that placing a dummy plug in it puts it in the "off" mode. When the jack is removed, the ringer starts. Open the lid and press the momentary switch to stop it. I haven't worked out the reseting of this mode. While this seems "cool" it also might be clunky.

2) Edit the soundfile by inserting 10 seconds of silence at the beginning and then string together a dozen or so rings. Place this new file into the gadget, but don't use the loop feature. This way all you have to do is open the lid, press the button, close it and then wait for the ring ala TOS communicator. So great idea! I'm leaning toward this option.

I really want to avoid creating an external button...eventually all of us who conrtibute to this great thread will happen upon the ideal solution.

BTW I am still trying to find a screen. So far the clock kit seems to be the only alternative, but I hate spend so much on cheap clock.:unsure

My pleasure...it occured to me that the gizmos they put in audible greeting cards might be useful if they could be personalized...there are several types out there, but this one is made with more durability and less disposability...as for the sound, the brassy quality of the wheatley box really adds enhanced, yet spendidly grating quality to the sound file. Very insistent ring...reminds me of the phone ring in "Brazil".

But I will say that the ring is slightly muffled when the box is closed, but it really grabs you by the lapels when the lid is opened.:love
