Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Please keep me in mind for a faceplate. I can not access the junkyard site as of yet....Thanks

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I think that dot on the back might just be a rivet.

I know that when dealing with trademark logos it only needs to be partially obscured to avoid legal issues in TV and film.

in the end well have about 25-28 to go around, a junkyard thread will go up when theyre done and in-hand.

I ummm, I have a problem though K, I have at least a month before i have sufficient privileges to do anything in the Junkyard. XD Can you PM me so I can pay you directly for one of the faceplates?

Does anyone have the Farnsworth Text in a vector format like Illustrator they could send me?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

a few more from dr_slurpee.
The more i see those rivets on the front, the more they look like the prop people may have done them, they just dont look evenly spaced or cleanly inserted.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

That last pic looks like the rivets are holding on an extra plate on the back.

edit.
Looking at the others I see the same seam on the edge, I think it is and added plate.

wonder if it was to cover something up, because i think theres only one prop thats got those rivets on the front and back, it doesnt show up much.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I don't think that's the edge of an extra plate showing; I think it's just paint wear along the edge.
There is a shadow between 2 hi lites.
Doesn't look like wear also notice the distance from the raised grip strip.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I made a little more progress on my Farnsworth last night. I created a vector file of the face plate and mounted it to some thin styrene for the purposes of testing dimensions of the plate and to serve as a temp placeholder for all the parts until a proper brass plate is ready.

I found in my file building that the dimensions on the plate should be 3.5 inches wide and 5.9375 inches wide. The corner curves should be .9125 radius (my insert in the photos shows my original calculation of 1 inch diameter corners was incorrect).

My paint for the box was a suede spray paint in two colors sprayed as a dark coffee color first and then a lighter 'spritzing' of a more natural light brown.

So I still need to locate a proper push button and then I am all set for the brass face plate.

I did a freeze on the tv and took these pics. Looks like the jacks have the nut on the outside of the case. One of them has been tightened more than the other and is sticking out a little more. Crappy pics but it's an old camera about 4-6"away from the tv.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Great caps Zombie killer.

Anyhow, a few days ago i was driving near my house and I saw a trophy shop and the sign said they did engraving.
I figured I'd give it a try so I stopped by my house put the Farnsworth vector file on a disc, and brought over a piece of brass to see if they could engrave it.
As soon as I walked in I noticed it was a little mom and pop shop.
I noticed the trophies had perfect text engraving (not done by hand) so I figured they'd be able to to the faceplate with no problem.
I gave the lady a printout of the faceplate design, and also gave her the disc.
When I handed her the disc she said "Oh we don't need the disc, we just need a printout".
That should have been my first clue that the end result was not going to be satisfactory.
I told her "Well, take the disc anyways in case you need the vector files for the correct font style".

Today i got a call and they sad the faceplate was ready.
When i went to pick it up, sure enough there were problems with the engraving.

The "F" in Farnsworth was different and they used an entirely different text for the numbers (Looks like they used Ariel).
The numbers were also outlines instead of solid.

I was about to say something, but I had a headache and just decided to let it go (It cost me 8 bucks, so no big deal)

I don't understand why they couldn't have called me and said "Hey, we don't have the correct text for the numbers and the "F".

Also, does anyone know how these engraving machines do their text?
Does it use a Adobe Illustrator vector text ?

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Meanwhile as the Farnsworth research and builds continue, I also came up with this rendition to add to the Tesla, so here's the W13 Landing Party set LOL. The Farnsworh shell is an actal RW tackle box, but the interior is made in my shop. The only other item I actually bought in a local store for a few dollars just for this prop was the item used for the video screen. It's a really common item that you can even find in your supermarket next to the lightbulbs. ;)
