Farnsworth Discussion

Yeah, I have been waiting for 5 weeks for mine... and shipping from the UK to Sweden is only a couple days!

I've been waiting about 4 weeks for my one, and I'm IN the UK! I just got another email from them saying their anodizer broke down, and that the gold ones should be back in stock and shipped out next week. They're trying my patience. If it gets to next Thursday with no update I'm just gonna cancel my order and look elsewhere ^_^

What's the best paint to get? Textured brown or hammered? Should I do an undercoat of gold over the silver?

They look great, I think you should do a gold coat to make them more exact, and since you have two why not do one in each style? Then you can decide which looks best, and always repaint it :D

here's what they look like. One had the metal separators which leaves these bumps, the other had the foam insert glued. The glue looks to be some sort of vintage contact cement. It leaves an even residue. I think I'll just paint over it, unless someone has a good idea on how to properly remove it.

You could use acteone to get the glue off. As the box is aluminium the solvent won't hurt it but should just melt the glue right off.

Thanks, I'll try acetone. Well, I'll get acetone and then try it... lol.
The glue is just on the inside... it was to hold the inserts. so there's really just one side to remove; the rest is inside, hidden away.

Acetone it will be :)

You might already have some at home. Acetone is the active solvent in many (but not all) nail polish removers.

I don't use nail polish, but the girlfriend does. I'll hunt down her remover. Is it specifically written on the bottle?

Something else that I have is denatured alcohol, think that would work? I'll give it a try.

Meh, she uses nail remover in sponge form. It IS ingenious, but not compatible with using it for other purposes...

this said, I soaked a q-tip in there for a test run and it seems to eat trough the glue; seems we're onto something.

the denatured alcohol seems to somehow work, I'll try to work it out with that until I get proper acetone.

Soaking the glue in denatured alcohol (I used fondue fuel) seems to work. It took several soak, some scrubbing but I think the results speak for themselves! Filling the box with the fluid is the easiest course of action, and it dissolves the glue slowly.

All to say... if anyone sees vintage simalloy weathley boxes somewhere, don't be afraid by the glued inserts, they take less than an hour to remove.

(this is the easiest before/after pictures I ever took...)

BTW anyone need fishing flies? I have like a hundreed of them...

My last Box was a black Wheatley box. You have to paint the inside wall gold. My wife could only tell it was differant with the gold box next to it. The paint on the out side of the box seem to stick better to the black box.

I was wondering if anyone has a Brown center knob they would like to trade? I have a push button the one that looks like the one use on the screen used farnsworth. Or I have a lathe and can mill off the bottons(few) of the brown knobs. I was hoping to get one without the white line on top. PM me if you have one. I have to build a Franworth for a friend.
Thanks
Mark

Is there a good file for the faceplate somewhere? I've found an .ai file in this thread, but it wouldn't open in my photoshop.

So where did I go wrong? My knob for the "brown knob" looks off - other than color. is there a specific knob for this, because my closest find isn't measuring up (circled in green.)

Also my push button threaded shaft is too wide for the awesome farnsworth plate from a recent run (circled in red.) Anyone know of better?

Sulla, based on the photo, I can't tell if you're using the correct middle knob or not... Do you have a side profile shot of it? Either way, you'll have to shave off the skirt on the knob to match the original.

Sulla it looks like the wrong pushbutton but you could use it of course by making the hole bigger. The right switch can be hard to find but the correct part number is listed in this message thread..

It's a Farnsworth factory. Nice work Mark. Is the one on the right in the 2nd photo a bit smaller or is the middle one bigger? In the top photo was the screen in the bottom right one from the original run of vacuum molded screens? What have you been using in the other ones? Ford radio glass?

I feel slack as I haven't even gotten the first one finished.

Peter they are all the same size. It is the camera and the way I took the picture. The on the one on the left is a white lense from a incondessent tap light. It is dome shaped. The other 2 are white styrene that I vaccumed form from a master I made. They are alittle flatter and not as tall as the tap light dome. The problem with the tap light I used is it is just at that limit to be able to close the lid. So the plate is a little lower in the box. I like the vaccumed formed one. My vaccume former broke so I haven't made a new one for the 1st one I made. I poshied the styrene so it looks clear.
Something else the one on the right bottom is a black Weastley box So the brass inside wall is painted.

Ok I wanted to give back something to the board. I have to do some machineing in the next week or so. So if you would like to have the shirt machined off you brown knob you can send it to me and I will do it. No cost to you. Just PM me. You will have to send your knob to me with a prepay return envelope or box. I wil do more then one it only take a minute to do them. If anyone has an extra let me know I need one for a friend. It can be a black knob. LMK
Thanks
