Fallout Raider - Painspike Armor (WIP)

Well, I'm kind of bummed about how the con went. Although I had a lot of fun, I didn't really get to spend much time in either of my new costumes, and we only got one photo of our entire Fallout group before some of them ran off to the costume contest.

We'd really like to do a photoshoot in a more appropriate location, so hopefully we'll be able to find something locally.

Here's a better shot of me (left) with my fellow raider:

In retrospect I wish I wouldn't have worn the jacket, even though it was cold as hell. I also didn't have time to do anything too crazy with my hair, so I just hairsprayed it some, and even though I dirtied myself up pretty well, it doesn't really show in the photos.

It'll probably be a few more months before I'm able to wear this again, so I'm gonna work hard on that whole getting into shape thing.

haha Dude you look totally awesome. Personally I think it looks better with the jacket part off.

Yeah, I kinda wish I'd just manned up and not worn it. Oh well! I'll be wearing it again at some point, if not in the near future then at Dragon*Con.

Now the question is, what weapon do I want to make to replace my silly bat?

Originally I wanted a rocket launcher. But now what I really want is an auto axe.

I really have no idea how I'm gonna make this thing. I've got, what... 5 months to figure it out? eek.

They make kids garden toys. You should be able to get a toy chainsaw and a weed wacker. I think those are the major components.

That weapon looks simple enough that you could probably turn it into a pseudo-pepakura. But instead of doing paper, you can use styrene sheet to build up the body. If you can get the 3D model for me I can do the rest for you if you'd like!

If only I knew how to do 3D models... :(

I was thinking of trying to do it in some kind of sheets. I just have basically no experience with this sort of thing, so it's gonna take a lot of trial and error.

I'm sure someone can rip the 3D model from the game. If I owned FO3 I would give it a shot.

If anybody reading this has the game and can get me the model, send me a PM or something!

And the RPF community comes through again!

Got the model from the game into Blender, tomorrow or this weekend I'll chop it down and turn it into a styrene pep/template for you Galacticat.

Oh wow, that's awesome! Thanks so much! Now I'll have to finally get around to learning how to pep. ;)

Well I don't know if you need to learn normal pepping, what I'm going to do is similar to what people do for the foam templates. So it will just be simple shapes, no tabs and no folds. I did something similar with my Gravity Gun when I was doing mock ups, I used pepakura to make templates to cut out of foamcore board. You can use the same method with sheet styrene or, depending on how sturdy you want the piece, you could probably just do it with stacked foamboard too.

Hopefully it will make sense when I get you the file, haha.

You could actually skip a lot of work if you're so inclined. A toy chainsaw (or even a broken real electric one) could be used as the base of the saw. Then all you'd have to do is add some of the extras, the saw head, and paint!

Just a thought! I love fallout, and made (still making) my own armored vault jumpsuit and 10mm pistol.

Keep up the great work!!

I'd thought about that, but so far I haven't had much luck with matching parts/finding the right shapes. I already have a toy chainsaw and it doesn't look close at all.

So, DragonCon was originally the big reason for creating the painspike armor... and I ended up wearing it for all of two hours. Honestly, I'm not happy with how it looks on me (still haven't made much progress in the weight department), and it's very awkward to wear. It was horrible trying to get through the crowds in it - I'm surprised I didn't lose any spikes.

Anyway, here's one of the few shots I found that I actually look decent in. Credit goes to the Atlanta Fashion Police (obviously, lol).

I wore the bandage around my middle because I was feeling really bloated and self-conscious. :p

I don't foresee myself wearing the armor again unless we can find a cool place for a photoshoot. I've also decided against making the auto axe, because I just.. kind of lost interest in it. Too many other projects I'm way more excited about!

Wow. The complete costume looks great! That's one of my favorite raider armors...it's so ridiculous. You stuck so close to the original design but the parts you changed look awesome too! More spikes is always better haha. From my experience soft foam spikes don't tend to stay on too well so you lucked out there!

That's a shame you're going to retire this costume after so much work on it.

That looks great! You could even turn that into several costumes. There's a shopping mall (I think that's what it was) where the Raiders get some Enclave armor and they all have different parts on.
