Totally insane der Kommissar, thanks for the link to this awesome build thread. You made a killer call using the M1 helmet liner and the modifications make it look absolutely wicked! Kudos! :thumbsup
 
sadly i wont be wearing this for comic con, (i really wanted to, but i got a fantastic opportunity to lend it to someone) but i will be trying to drop by at the RPF meetup on thursday and/or friday to say hi to people, so keep an eye out for my scrawny self, possibly dressed as scarecrow or the 10th Dr who.

I'm here to ask you a question. Did You make the vest of two layers of EVA foam?

Kommissar, first of all, amazing job with this. Also, thank you for taking the time to be so detailed in your process and sharing it with everyone. I am slowly starting to work on my own costume right now, working on the mask now :)

I had a few questions that I didn't see answered throughout the thread. Pertaining to the coat, would you mind sharing your pattern? Ive seen a few duster jacket patterns here and there online, but nothing close to this design.

I've never sewn clothes before (but I sew fleece hat and plushies flawlessly, haha) so I dont even know where to begin with sewing a jacket!! I found the fabric at Jo-anns and I have a good machine. You mentioned earlier that you had omitted the sewing process pictures because it wasn't interesting... would you mind sharing them at this time? I tend to be a visual learner, and since I have no idea where to begin maybe it would help spark some ideas or better understand the process?

The other thing is, you said you made 2 jackets for extra thickness and support? After seeing the fabric I think that is an excellent idea, but I have no clue how to pull off a double jacket!!

Basically, if you can offer any tips / suggestions / tutorials on the jacket piece it would be much appreciated. Thank you ^^
 
amazing work. It's hard to find this kind of craftsmanship these days. If only you had a .50 cal rifle to go with it.
does the collar on the duster stay up by its self or did you add support?
what did you make the backpack thing out of and how do you attach it?
and about how many yards of the duck cloth did you need for the duster?
 
dear kommissar, i am currently working on my own ncr veteran ranger costume, and the only reason i joined this site was to contact you. from what i know, you have the best looking costume of anybody on the interwebs, and i was hoping to ask you a question, and a couple of comments. firstly, my biggest question: could you please send me pictures of the template of the duster, or WIP photos, as i can not find these templates anywhere. (if you can't, that's okay) secondly, the 9mm, 9mm submachine gun, and the anti materiel rifle are all real guns. the 9mm is a browning hi-power model, the 9mm submachine gun is actually a wwII grease gun, and the anti materiel rifle is the pgm HECATE. hope this helps anybody looking for some reference, and i desperately hope that you could please at least read this. i'm a huge fan.

i'll see if i have any shots of the sewing process, chances are i don't, since a sewing machine is even more hands on than most of my props (hard to put down a half made coat that is sitting draped over your lap covered in sharp pins for a snapshot)

i do still have the pattern that was mostly made by a friend of mine, but at best it would be a photo of it, since i don't have a scanner big enough to fit the whole pattern in.

my biggest suggestion to sewing is buy that book i keep mentioning, the costume tech's handbook?

it teaches everything needed to learn pattern making and sewing.

mostly, i just double stitched along most seams (about a 1/8th of an inch beside the seam a second time to reinforce it, just make sure you catch the seam allowance inside that, underneath)

i think i recall spending about 50-60 on duck cloth, so i would hazard about 5-6 yards

when sewing you need to decide on an inside, and an outside, and keep with that plan the whole piece your sewing, otherwise you end with seams on the outside in some places and the inside on other areas.. which is very bad.
to make a 'double coat' just means to make one copy of the coat with seam allowances on the inside (number 1), and a second with all the seams on the outside(number 2).
the concept is that number one is the outside and #2 is the inside, so some creative inside-outing to sew the sides, bottom and collar of the coat is required.
some sewing around the arm holes is also great as a last step, to keep both parts lined up inside.
i'm sorry but sewing is way too complicated for me to give a run down on, do what i did, ask friends who can sew, take a class in community college and buy that book :)

the collar has some starch, but im replacing the 'mask tube' soon to something softer so it wont knock my collar down as much.
backpack? pipes, pvc pipes. and i attached them with poppers, this is something i'm pretty sure i have mentioned before, in the photo description of the costume, since i seem to recall being impressed i only needed 2 of the 4 poppers i stitched onto the back of my coat.

listed above, i don't think i have any WIP photos, i'll try to take a snapshot of the template, but i would encourage you to follow the same advice i gave allyson

i used breaklight repair kits from an autozone, they came with these plastic sheets about the thickness of creditcards, but much bigger, in red.
 
Thank you for getting back to me, much appreciated :)

In the meantime I ended up ordering a pattern from simplicity, with the intention of altering it slightly. I got 5 yards of duck cloth and (assuming I followed the pattern correctly!) used almost all of it. I have JUST enough left to make the rain cape, but Im a little unsure what shape this should be so that when I sew it it looks correct.

Would you be able to share the part of your pattern that you used for the rain cape? Maybe some detailage of how you attatched it and whatnot? I dont need the actual pattern, just a picture of it so I can visually see where you went with this.

RIght now my jacket is in pieces, ready to be sewed, but im nervous to take this next step XD I may force myself to do it tomorrow.

I had another question for you, for your mask you said you used a red plastic from a brake light kit? I did some googling and found brake light kits to be OUTRAGEOUS in price when I only need a small piece of the plastic for the eyes. I dont know if this is a material that you have excess of that you would be willing to sell? (I would of course pay for shipping and whatnot for your trouble!). As it stands right now my only other idea is to use a pair of my old snowboard goggle lenses, but those are orange, not red XD

Really hope I can get this project completed in time.

EDIT: Also... your photos are not working anymore! Bandwidth exceeded :( Is there anyway to re-upload these? Im using your thread as a guide so without pictures this leaves me in a bad place XD

Agreed, I'm in the same boat, and if you could, can you also post the schematic you made for the LEDs in the helmet?
 
the break light kit i got was about 5 - 10 bucks at an autozone, and there was enough in the pack for three lenses, as in three eyes, not three sets of eyes.
so i dont have any to spare, sorry.

the bandwidth is solved now, you guys manged to view these pics so much it went over my 10 gig bandwidth allowance.

as for the cape, i need to find my patterns, i just moved and got a lot of water damage on my boxes of books, so hopefully i haven't lost the pattern.
i would suggest use some large sheets of paper or some muslin/a sheet from a bed gotten from a thrift store for cheap, and experiment to find out what hangs best in terms of shape for your shoulders.
the shape of mine, from what i recall is not my fave part of the costume, for sure.
if i find the pattern i will try to show some shots of it.
 
Umm, quick question. What were the values of the resistors you used? I could see in one picture (possibly?) Yellow Purple Brown, if you could please tell me what the values are i'd be very appreciative.
