Komm, i know i'm new here but this has worked for me in the past on lettering. If you get some decent card (printable) you can print off what you want from a PC (use photoshop or something). So long as you are good with a blade you can cut out the lettering for use as a stencil. For really fine stuff i would go with what sakara says, any kit decals are cheap and easy to use.
The other thing i will say and please to take this personally is.....I know you are a trim guy and that the coat is going to have shoulder pads. Did you think about maybe adding some padding to the inside of the jacket to bulk out your shoulders a little more? Again just looking at the ref pics etc. Like i said please don't take offense coz it's an amazing build was just curious.
p.s. the mask looks great you don't need to worry about doing much more too it

Kommissar, I would recommend "washing" the helmet and armor. You seem to have done a great job with the individual battle marks but I think it lacks that atmospheric grittiness. In fact, that could be the "detail" you feel like you are missing.
You've done a good job applying dirt and rust deposits, now you just need to fill in the blank spots between them. That's where washing comes in.
If you're unfamiliar with it, washing (commonly referred to as blackwashing) is when you take spray paint and mist an object from like 3-5 feet away.
So what I would do is take some black, brown, and grey spray paint (maybe tan for a sandy touch), set the helmet down in a controlled enviornment without any wind (I used my garage floor with paper laid out) and spray the paint from 3-5 feet away. About shoulder height if the object is on the floor. Spray in a fairly large sweeping motion to get all over. The idea is to get a very fine mist on the surface of the object.
It may be hard to notice at first, but if the paper around the floor is covered in a fine dust-like overspray, that is what you are looking for.
Here is one of my helmets before and after washing it.
It may be sort of hard to tell from the photographs because they are poorly lit and un-detailed. But in real life it adds a very gritty look akin to accumilated dirt and grime on a metal surface. It makes it look more real and can get rid of that "cartoonish" look.
You may also want to look into other more unconventional methods of weathering, such as water stains.
There's a lot to weathering besides battle marks. "Atmospheric" weathering as I like to call it, plays a big part in the overall look of a piece. It's one of my favorite things to do. Let me know if want any more pointers in this stuff. Keep it up!

thanks lutso, i've done a bit of that misting effect with my black spray on the helmet, and then reapplied more grey over areas, then done it again, with some good effect.
i shall try to get some browns and give the mask some of that treatment! i'll need those colors for the flag anyway.
and thank you everyone else for the model train suggestions, i'll be trying to hit up one of those places in the next few days and see what i can get

Without a doubt, you have a really fantastic build going! I ABSOLUTELY love the ranger mask. In fact, it inspired me to bit the bullet and buy New Vegas today since I haven't played it yet. Lol.
I do have one thing I hope you'll do though, with the duster if you hadn't thought about adding shoulder pads I would recommend that you do. Now I realize that you are not done with the sewing yet... but despite an incredible build on both the helmet and vest, It'd really make your whole figure more imposing if you broaden out your shoulders with like a 1" pad. Just my 2 cents. If you were already planning that... Great!

okay,
was laboring over something not quite right 'bout the helmet,
well with the helpfull comment of a friend, i took a bit off the rim, and now it looks alot more like the shape it should.
i've gone for adding a healthy coat of grim to the parts,
this shot really shows the different colors i've lightly misted across the parts.
this is a tradition of mine.
i'm not a fallout 3 fan, that is to say, i didn't START with fallout 3, i'm an original fan, and while i enjoyed F3, the number 13 holds a special place in my heart, as anyone who enjoyed the first two games i'm sure will agree.
so i make a point of including this number on every fallout costume i do (i've done a vault dweller before as well)
i'll also be adding a few more kill marks on the helmet as well.

i'll be adding some chemical to the lens to stop them fogging up on me.
i'll be painting the rim of the helmet, and it's also on slightly crooked, and taken from an angle where my photographer was sitting while i was standing.

Looks great! try looking for a red iridium shield then cutting that up for lenses to get that perfect blood red lenses so your eyes can't be seen.
