Falconer Bio sculpt...

that looks awsome the falcon predator is my favorite out of all the predators in the movie.
so are you planning on painting it the same color as the movie or giving it a custom paint job
with a tint of some other color like black, blue, green, or maybe even a hint of gold. just putting ideas
out there  to give it a little self customization. overall it looks great!!
cant wait to see it finished, keep up the good work.

I plan on sculpting the rest of the armor, neck ring, and dread rings as well. I'll probably paint the first one up the same as the movie, although I'm not sure about a second paint up...maybe a blackish color and name it "Raven" to keep with the bird-named theme. Although it did pass through my head about doing a hybrid Falconer/Mr. Black. Mr. Black paint up/color scheme with Falconer bio/armor.

Thanks for the compliments guys, greatly appreciated. I'm just waiting on the molding material to come in.

thats cool yea so far ur doin a great job, i was just throwin ideas out there. lol.
that would be cool to call it "Raven". keepin the bird spirit alive.
im sure it will be completely awsome w/ whatever color you choose
keep up the good work

Well, I have all the materials to start the molding process and I wanted to post these pic's as well. I'm using the hez method to mold making. My supplies are:

Rebound 25, three trial kit versions [Smooth-on]
Thi-vex silicon thickener [Smooth-on]
Fiberglass matte [Wal-Mart]
Fiberglass resin [Wal-Mart]
Bondo [Wal-Mart]
Resin [Wal-Mart]
Liquid Resin Hardener [Auto-Zone/Auto parts store]
Easy Release Mold Release [DickBlick]

I didn't purchase the pigment mainly because the orange color really doesn't bother me. Plus it looks tropical, and it's snowing outside and it reminds me of the beach.

Here's my first layer, the detail/beauty coat:

Here you can slightly see the clay lip at the bottom of the sculpture.

I didn't purchase any resin yet, but I will tonight. I will probably be using the Smooth-on Cast 325 from smooth-on. It took five days for the other materials to get here, so I imagine it will take the same amount of time for the resin to arrive. I hope to be casting by Tuesday. I might to a test cast, or strengthen up the fiberglass resin with the matte and cast a test cast or master cast. That and it will give me time to watch some youtube videos on slush casting.

Quick question guys. About how much resin is typically used in a bio cast? The thickness I'm going for is between a 1/4" to 1/2". I'm probably going to be purchasing the gallon supply though.

Thanks for viewing!

You can get by with a trial kit amount of resin, depending on how thick you want it. Also the 325 is not the greatest for making a full bio from. It takes a long time to cure fully, though a thin skin of it is great for cold casting or if you want a particularly vibrant color. I would recommend the 320 as a better alternative for all round casting.

Okay, thanks again! I was searching and came upon an old thread about resin. I read somewhere on the thread that the Smooth-Cast 300 isn't that user friendly to slush cast. To be honest, I'm shocked that a trial kit would work for a bio. I might still get the gallon to have the extra resin too.

Well...I'll be honest, a trial kit doesn't leave a lot of room for error. The gallon is much more economical though, so if you are planning on doing more than one (I assume you are) it's the much better buy.

Yea, I plan on doing more then one. Plus, the gallon is only $50 more then one trail kit too. But, somehow my layers aren't looking at thick as yours does. Perhaps I'm not putting enough silicon on, but there are some deep undercuts and spots on the bio though too.

Third layer added, same as layer two. I'm going to add the thickener to the fourth layer too and fill in the undercuts, eyes, and other area's that might make getting the mother mold off difficult. I'm going to prep the keys too, but I think I may add them on during the forth layer though.

I think the flash and overall lighting may make the look like the silicon isn't that thick?

Thanks for viewing.

Good point. I can always add more layers too. That and I haven't added the thickener layer yet too.

The Rondo layer is added. I'll let it cure for about 1.5 to 2 hours [it says 30 min. cure time for the bondo and 1.5-2 hours for resin]. The matte layer is next, then a little bit of the rondo again and I'm done.

how thick did your silicone end up being?

I think around a 1/4" thick. I put on the fiberglass last night and coated that with resin today, so I'll know for sure later today. I'm kind of nervous if both molds are thin. For some reason I always believed that both molds had to be really thick. I'm going to be ordering my resin today, and I'm using Smooth-Cast 320. I couldn't find the pigment on their site, so I think I'll just go pigment-less and go with the white. That and I don't think it's a major issue as far as the color of the cast. It will be primer, painted, etc... I could be wrong though.

I'll post some pic's up later. They're on my cell and that died... lol

It's all complete, mold done. Both molds turned out thinner then I wanted it to be, but when the silicon mold is in the mothermold, it seems like it will be fine. Next time I mold a bio, I'll make sure that the molds are thicker. Although I do remember reading somewhere [or maybe on the Smooth-on video] that the recommended thickness is 3/8"?

Everything turned out okay and the detail looks good in the silicon mold. There weren't any spots where it got either mold got hung up and after working it with a long screwdriver, the mothermold popped off. I did find out what a "pigs ear" is in fiberglass though. lol But overall both molds look okay to me. I'm still nervous until I actually cast one up, but I'm happy as hell that I finally molded it the bio and have my first mold ever.

Big thanks to hez for all the help and answering a ton of questions!!!

On to the pics.

Another angle.

I imagine with the silicon being rubber, that it isn't that firm leading to the "pancake" flip flop it does outside the mothermold.

Thanks for viewing my thread from sculpt to mold. Within the next week [probably Friday] I'll receive my resin and pigment and I'll do my first cast.
