FABRICATING a real IRONMAN suit out of STEEL.

I'm not picking sides in anyway. But as a fella who has worked with Brass, copper, silver, gold. I can tell you that it can be a chore. Forging, cutting, welding is difficult work. Now pepakura weather it's foam or resin/fibre glass or even polymer is a different animal, but i feel is just as difficult. They are simply 2 separate mediums. Everyone loves pics, pics and progress usually go hand and hand. So when that does'nt happen people get upset. I will watch and see. I would very much like to see. Ghost-those are some awesome pieces by the way...GM

GhostMinion, all you exude is hate and doubt. This is a person stepping outside of their normal field of expertise and asked for advice on how to attempt a project. He might be bringing skills and knowledge to the table that has not been used before on these type applications. As he has said he is not the best with computers, so maybe posting pictures is not super straight forward for him, no need to **** all over him.

He has been keeping some form of an update, if you want to say that it is for ego stroking, go look in a mirror. He is trying to keep us appraised of a personal project that, he did not even have to share with us, and I for one would like to see/hear about progress. He will have pics when he has pics. This is not a man on a schedule, this is a labor of love, and sometimes these things take years (I know I have some things on shelves needing to be finished).

mrjbarl1: glad to hear the pep will work on the cnc plotters, that is a huge bonus for rapid pattern creation. I hope the creation process goes well, ignore the hater.

thank you very much for the support, you hit the nail right on the head as to what im trying to do at this point with keeping people filled in on the project and being open to new ideas and such. i am also very excited that i was able to use these files on a laser cutting machine. on a side note, i talked to the guy that does water jetting on the parts for some of my products that i sell through my business and i realized that for foam based pep models, it would be very cheap, easy, and productive to use the proper files needed; and be able to cut numerous parts at a time by stacking anywhere from 2 sheets to 30 sheets of foam at a time and cutting them all at once with just the water jet and no abrasive. im learning more and more as i go on with this project and constantly coming up with new/better ideas to do things. again, thank you very much for your support on my project. i look forward to showing off my handy work when i can finally start working on it!

Don't get ahead of yourself with water jetting foam, you could get a nice clean basic cutout of the shape but then you're still going to spend a ton of time determining what pieces then need to be hand cut to a 45 for making your folds, bends, etc. In theory it's a quick great idea but in the end you might just cause yourself more work.

Let me take a few steps back........

We are not at war. This is not a competition. So there is no need for a "truce".

My gripe has nothing to do with your project or the ideas therein. I am a sheet metal man of fifteen years. I've been banging ductwork together for a long time. I know full well about metal fabrication, it's my profession. I don't go posting that fact because, well, who the hell knows what job I actually do, or cares.

But know that this build idea can be done. It already has been done. Maybe not the way you plan to do yours, but the idea is the same.

A metal suit.

My problem is your behavior as a member of this forum.

You started three threads for the same project. When a veteran member, with whom I have a great deal of respect for, Kevin Gossett, informed you that this was bad form, you scoffed him off.

Right out of the gates, you were disrespectful toward this community. You were very demanding that we must help you get these files, and seemed to want to rub it in our faces when someone did give you the files. You, to my knowledge, have made no effort to credit who's files you are using.

You have maintained an attitude that we are just in your way, and trying to stop you from building. When we offer you advice, you scoff it. I believe you even told me that I didn't know when to keep my mouth shut, when I had first politely expressed that I thought you were being rude.

And of course, the constant bumping of your thread.

There is an acceptable code of behavior here at the RPF. Now I'm no moderator, and my words carry no weight that I'm aware of. But you need to become aware of what is considered acceptable behavior. Because you are not practicing it. When informed of such, you scoff us off and tell us we are just getting in your way.

Please note that the RPF is not your personal facebook page. We are not here simply just for you. And the words please and thank you would go a long way.

That said, I'm not perfect either, and I'm a man enough to admit that. If you feel that I have bullied you, you have my sincere apology. I'm not a bully and will not project such an image of myself.

Like I said, we are not at war. If you need me to say truce, then fine. Truce.

But please be respectful of the community that I love very much, and please be respectful to it's members, too. Some of these guys have puled me through some hard times (recently) and I have much love for them.

Build, man. Build. I hope that you do succeed, and I'll be happy to eat my words. But please take some time to learn the etquite of the forum.(yeah I know I spelled that wrong).

Maybe you noobs can do some research and determine what your actually talking about.

But I don't have time to tell you what a tool you are.

So if you don't like my posts, report them!

So, go climb a tree, buddy. :)

mrjbarl1, I think the problem you're coming up against is a fairly basic one. We are a community filled with very talented people who make amazing pieces. We tend not to give people credit for what they're "planning" on doing. We don't judge anyone for any lack of skill or knowledge they have and will praise someone's first pep build as much as we'll praise a fully 3D printed and CNC milled production-quality piece. They all take effort, talent, and time...but they show their process.

We don't care if all you have is a pile of metal on the floor while saying, "Look what I just got" or a fully assembled suit, we WANT to give you credit here. We WANT to see you succeed, but in order to do that you need to help us see your process. Pictures are the simplest way to do this since so much of what we do here is visual.

Don't think that just because you haven't actually put any metal together that you can't share pictures. Take a picture of a pile of metal. Show us your welding equipment? Got an auto-hammer or an english wheel? We'd love to see those too! Just finished your pep mockup? Show us. If you're not actually going to show people what you're doing, there really isn't much point to this thread.

The site motto is "Craft your Fandom" and we ALL want to see you succeed in that regard, but until people can actually see that you're working and not just talking a big game (Trust me, those types of members are a dime a dozen and don't last long here) there is no crafting going on.

So, I wish you the best with the project, but I hope you start to show your progress because otherwise this is just going to turn into you talking to yourself, which I don't think you or anyone here wants.

Good luck! Hope to see what you've been up to!

-Nick

i definitly agree with you, it was only an idea that popped in my head while i was there looking at the machine. i wouldnt even know where to begin with the foam building and honestly dont think ill ever care to, just because im partial to using steel on damn near everything lol. but just in case anyone could figure a way to use that idea, there it is! as for me, i have taken a liking to the pep building. granted the first thing i ever made with it is the ironman mark vii helmet, but it was suprisingly not as hard as i thought it would be to figure out. i was extremely pleased with the finished product.

on a side note, before i had the thought of trying the pepakura stuff i read in some various threads that people were having an issue with the paper warping during the resin process. so i decided to shoot from the hip on my first pep model and looked into various different papers and cardboard to use that would be thin/strong enough to prevent warping during the resin process; as well as making the scoring and bending part a little easier while glueing everything together.

after searching through all the different types of card stock, cardboard and paper; i came across some 9"x12" water color paper which is considerably heavy and ridgid but reasonably flexible. im guessing it is slightly thicker than most card stock used for pepakura, but i changed the standard paper size in the settings to 9x12 on my printer and even tho i had to give each sheet a little push into the printer because of the thickness; it printed everything very clearly. after cutting out and scoring all the parts for folding; everything went extremely smooth and because if the thicker/more ridgid paper, all my folds and cuts came out extremely crisp and defined and made gluing everything together very fast and easy as well as leaving the finished product considerably ridgid. i used aleene's turbo tacky glue which allowed enough time for correct placement of the pieces, but also dries fast enough to make this process go rather quickly. i have not resined it yet, but im confident that it will have no problem holding its shape when i do.

Like i said, this was my first pep build and i chose the materials that i personally thought would work best for this type of project and i couldnt be happier with how it came out. i dont know if this is already a common method for doing pepakura; but if not then i highly reccomend using these materials for pep building.

PS:

thank you for your input nick, i really do appreciate it. as you could tell, i am new to this sight and to alot of the methods that people use to make all of this cool stuff. prop building is something ive wanted to do and have been doing since i was a little kid and now that ive found this site and found out about pep building, and all of the talented people that have the same interests in this stuff as i do, i kinda felt like i needed to make an impact on everyone by building something that isnt often seen. i apologize for some of my comments that may have come off rude to some other members. i was just excited to show off what i can do or what im capable of doing. i want to turn heads with my projects and possibly offer my own tricks of the trade that i've aquired over the years. i do understand what you mean about showing my progress with pictures and i do plan on posting many pictures once i begin my build. i will get some pictures posted hopefully this evening. but thanks again and i look forward to gettin this show on the road!

Sounds awesome! Like I said, even though pictures of your materials or equipment might not have any major "wow factor" they go a long way towards saying, "this guy might just be on to something here."

Best of luck, and can't wait to see some pictures, whatever they may be.

as i just explained to nick, i am new to all of this and i do not mean to disrespect or offend anyone. i was not aware of how things worked as far as the threads and stuff go and was i for the lack of a better word, excited. i guess i was trying to turn heads with my ideas and was hell bent on getting a build started. ive stated in previous posts that i am making progress on my project and going as fast as i can. i have continued to post on here with small updates on my progress and explaining my process of how i am doing everything. i know i am lacking pictures at the moment, but that is soon going to change. i wasnt aware that simply talking with other members in my thread about my progress and ideas was improper use of this site, because i was recieving helpful feedback from other members as well as giving other members my own personal input for their ideas or builds. im man enough to admit that it was wrong of me to come off the way that i did, and i apologize for my actions.

i felt like i was maybe being attacked i guess?? which is why i was quick to get defensive.. nevertheless, im catching on to things in here and i have began to change my ediquit. you seem lik quite a seasoned veteran with all of this and probably have some valuble information that could possibly be helpful in the future.

ill be posting some pictures either tonight or tomorrow showing some progress that ive made on my helmet; that way i can finally show that im not just full of hot air. from the pictures you showed me it looks as tho you do alot of pep building and probably have a well oiled machine as to your process of doing your builds. if you look at the quote i wrote to vertigo, you can see what materials i chose to use for my first pep build. i dont know if my method/choice of materials is old news or not, but for never doing it before it went very smooth and i was extremely pleased with how it turned out. hopefully i can contribute some valuble knowledge and ideas to you and anyone else that may be in need of it.

also, i posted a pic of my halloween costume on page 2 if you didnt see it. it was a spur of the moment idea that i threw together and i know its crude but it was alot of fun to wear around and go places in with all the funny looks and comments i would get. i cant wait to have a realistic suit to wear places for fun.

..............................................(i think i spelled that word wrong too, its a tricky one)

No hard feelings.

And I would like to see the pep you did. This new material you speak of interests me.

I've got a lot of knowledge I'll be happy to share with you. Further more, I, just as other members, learn something new every day too.

First bit of advise....

Ditch the super gauge steel for thinner gauge. Your gonna get the same look and effect, with less weight. Easier to use, bend and you could spot weld in little areas to keep it together as you build.

But just mind the fact that weight is not on your side. I'm not saying ditch it for aluminum (though not a bad idea, either), but this heavy gauge stuff is gonna weigh more than you'll want to wear.

Not saying it wouldn't be cool though.....

I am really looking forward to when you have some pics up of this. The level of skill going into replica Iron Man armor keeps progressing at an amazing pace who knows how far it will or can go. Prior to stumbling onto this thread I was checking out some of the suits and wondering when someone would start trying to craft a more functional version.

I cannot believe I've sat and read through 8 pages of this. Hopefully, this will essentially be the new page 1.

Like the concept, I can appreciate it's been attemoted and done before, I do remember seeing something on YouTube along the same lines.
It sounds like an ambitious but rewarding build. Also looks like you've got alot of people here that want to help and contribute to this, which, for me as a noob makes me glad I joined.

I do agree that any sort of pictures would be great to see. Be it materials, pep, or even your workshop. Best of luck

I would really really really really like to see (if any at all) progress with this build. You have a great idea sir and would like to thoroughly watch you build this. Please supply SOMETHING . Not trying to be a forum Goblin but their has to be something you can show us.
