FABRICATING a real IRONMAN suit out of STEEL.

well that is if you can manage to keep it light-weight and have it articulate well, cant be good at paintball as ironman if you cant move fast!

Just re-read your first post. You mention TIG weld, why not go with aluminum. You would be saving a lot of wieght. I know that Samurai169 guesstamates his will be at the 150lb mark. Walking around after awhile can be exhausting, where as aluminum can save you a third or even half that. Any chance of suppling a vlog via youtube on this? GM

This is a valid point you make about the aluminum. I'm sure I will make SOME parts from aluminum, but I am unfortunately limited to only welding steel because my tig welder is not equipped to weld aluminum.we'll see how it goes lol

Sounds like a good idea and I hope you can pull it off, looking forward to progress.

Still sounds reminiscent of this one though, http://www.therpf.com/f9/my-homemade-advacnded-action-suit-57960/

I have no doubt that I can pull off the fabricating part of it, it will just take time and a lot of elbow grease. We'll see how it is gonna go once I start getting the parts together to start the build. I will keep everyone posted with info once I start the project. Can't wait to start it!

I think the reason people often roll their eyes at these projects is because ambitious posters always say what they will do instead of posting what they've already done on the project.

There are also good, psychological reasons to not list your goals to others: you're less likely to follow through because you already feel good about getting recognition for what you plan to accomplish. It saps your motivation.

Nevertheless, I wish you the best with your project.

That was a very well thought/ respectable comment. I agree with you 100% on this. It is one thing to say it and it's another to actually do it. I did make some good progress today with getting a run of some test pieces started for sizing with my laser cutter friend. so hopefully I can have something put together to take pictures of by the weekend. But my main reason for posting my ideas for the suit was to get further input/ ideas to use. Thank you for the post!

Update on the steel ironman suit- got the steel ordered and on its way to take to the laser cutter. Made a few test pieces out of cardboard with the scans off of the PDF file to dial in the correct sizing of the various parts(starting with the helmet) to be cut out of steel. Waiting for an update from the cutter to begin this run of the parts. Each individual section of the suit will be made one at a time so there is no confusion of which part is which after being cut. With the help of a friend, the marks used on the paper templates to line up when assembling the pieces; we replaced with small laser peirced holes which will easily be able to fill with the welder after getting the parts shaped accordingly and welded together. Once I acquire the parts to start building, I will post step by step pictures of the helmet as it comes together. Stay tuned!

if its w pep based metal suit you will need alot of to get nice curves..and they would still look like pepped paper if you know what i mean
cant wait to see how you handle it !

Waiting for pictures..getting excited. This thing is going to weigh a ton tho, hope you have been doing your leg exercises

This is a very ambitious and challenging project. We all wish you luck. If it all works, you'll have an Iron man suit that can actually protect you. But this may take some more work than most think. There is still the problem of shaping the metal to be smoothly curved since its a pep file, then there is the problem of getting all the metal parts to work together properly, and to top it off, it would be quite a heavy suit. Hate to be negative, but still, awesome project

sorry, but you come here making big claims about how good you are at everything, and dont even show any of your work?

99.99% of all members who come here with big promises, no prior work pictures and that kind of attitude, never even make it to finish one piece.
while you might be able to do it, noone cares for big promises. as long as you dont have anything to show, this just looks like a "hey look at me im awesome and gonna make this thing like noone ever did" thread.

you dont want negative feedback, yet you give us no opportunity for positive one.
there might be some people, who are saying: hey thats cool
or similar, but thats about it

with the material alone, the suit will weigh at least 300 pounds, so you will be in pain just wearing it.
steel is not cheap, so you gotta look at a price tag with 5 zeros in the back at least.

also, the statement: i am not tony stark nor do i claim to be, BUT i just might be the closest thing to it is just weird, and totally looks like youre just looking for attention.
also, you lack basic writing skills, theres just huge wall of texts in your posts.

overall, its good that you have a dream, but dont do stuff like this, posting big promises without anything to show.
it just makes you sound like you want attention

and i mean all this in the best possible way.

Lol I can't wait to see how I handle it too. I've got a fair amount of experience with doing this type of metal work, but I know I will be taking my time on it to make it look as good as possible. I can tell you right now tho, it's gonna involve the ole hammer and dolly, a plenishing hammer, and a fair amount of heat lol

Could I see photos of your foam Ironman suit?
Which Mark did you build?
Did you rig it up with lights & such?

I really want to see pictures of the progress so far. I think a few have said it, but this thing is going to be heavy to actually try to wear. I've also worked with steel and I would suggest trying aluminum instead. Easier to work with and much lighter, not to mention cheaper! I would imagine this would be a display piece but can't wait to see some pics here.
