Evil Dead chainsaw versions: Need help

So I have this homelite XL sitting around and thought it was about time to turn it into Ash's weapon of choice. However, um still unsure if I'm going for the Army of Darkness version or Ash vs. Evil Dead.

I am leaning towards the latter, but am confused about the saw. To my knowledge, they are both homelite XL saws. But the AvED version has what looks to be a raised top section. Is that a fabricated piece, or do the base saws differ between AoD and AvED? Going through the Forums, I mostly see the AoD versions (or the original first Evil Dead version, which is another saw altogheter). So i'm a bit stumped. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Harm

The make/model homelite in army of Darkness is slightly different from AVED.
Both versions have a raised top section.

Have a look through this site, it has a lot of great information.

The AOD saws are the same saws used in ED2. They were retooled for AOD and the tops were metal. The AVED tops were cast resin. The guy that made the original saws for the show is on this site. Rob from Book of the Dead ws.

The make/model homelite in army of Darkness is slightly different from AVED.

I can't quite tell what differences you're highlighting in your pics. Same make and model across the chainsaws, but slight changes within the model, right? I think most people wouldn't mind minor differences.

He supplied them with some chainsaws but they were never used on screen. That said, yeah the tops probably were resin for AVED. I assume you're referencing the pics of the chainsaws when they came up for auction?

Guys,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Presumably the raised top is designed to allow for internals and a hand?

The hero AVED was on sale a while back, and looking at the pic it does seem tas if there's a side piece and a top piece based on the visible line between them. But it might just as well have been a solid piece. Anyway, I think I'll be going the AVED route. All I have to do now is figure out how to cast resin... ;-)

I also struggle with the subtle differences in the various saws. But If I get close enough that that particular issue is what distinguishes mine from the original, I'll take that as a compliment ;-)

Once I get started, I'll try to give some updates.

Thanks again!

Rob’s saws were used in the beginning of the first season. Just like the films the TV show had little continuity. His tops and the production tops are resin. A collector in the town I live in, won one of the saws and a power glove from that auction. He had 2 friends in our group restore them. We are really kinda nuts about details. But the saws Rob made were retooled and re molded for hand room and to avoid Universal raising a stink over copyright. The model saw with the angled out factory handle has a longer body. If you buy tops or parts from someone it won’t fit. The saws in ED2 were kept and reused in AOD and that make/model body has a shorter length and is slightly wider. Those tops are either 16 or 18 gauge sheet. (Not fun to cut shape and weld)
if you’re ever on Facebook look up KOS and Ghostbeaters. We do have tons of reference photos outside of what the auction has. And a lot of photos from the Mystic Museum’s exhibit with the screen used props from ED2 and AOD.
and yeah, some don’t mind if things aren’t accurate. My friend’s like to make fun of me saying I have a disease about accuracy.

For my (half completed) chainsaw build I made the top section out of acrylic. It might be a brittle plastic but its reinforced and you'd have to be fairly violent with the chainsaw to break it. It's worth considering if you don't want to fabricate out of metal or cast in resin.
