Endor Helmet Hero Research Thread

Hi Guys
I've been meaning to join the forum for a long time and final did today, looking forward to sharing some builds and checking out your amazing work, but I need your help with something.
I'm putting together an endor rebel helmet, Nik Sants in particular.
I've used a vac formed donut I picked up a while back and while I was inspecting photos to replicate the battle damage I noticed that on this particular donut there doesn't seem to be any detail on the back has anybody else noticed this.
Could it be that just the hero helmets had this vent detail and the background soldiers where formed from a different mould?

I'm not sure why this is, but it isn't the case for all the background helmets as the vent is seen on the back of the MoM helmet etc. Here's another picture of the same anomaly at the end of the film.

I initially thought it may be due to the donut having been flipped back to front, giving further evidence towards conclusion that the bill was a separate piece and not attached to the donut, but your photo clearly shows that can't be the case.

Strange isn't it. I was very nearly finished on my helmet but now it looks like I'll be starting fresh on the donut and modelling a one with no rear detail.
I'm also going to have a look at other troopers and see if this appears anywhere else, but that's already 2 confirmed, by the looks of it.

This is just speculation, but it’s possible that this was a prototype that made it onto the set, as it lacks the indentation, which may have been a later addition to the mould.

Here's a photo showing the rear indentation on a rebel taken during production in case you wanted to see it firsthand.

On another note, I've been meaning to share my findings (or lack of) in regards to the Hero:

I've tried to determine how the Hero version actually differs. From what I've concluded, the only change was the tailoring of the ANH flight cap, which had an added fabric extension at the rear. Beyond that, I haven’t found definitive photographic proof of other modifications.

I can't find any evidence to support the conclusion that the bill was a seperate piece, with my personal belief that the Leia helmet in the archives with the missing bill was used for the speeder scenes and was attached to the donut until it broke off in a stunt.

The RS 'prototype' definitely points more towards the bill having been attached piece, however the 'safety' moulds also sold on the propstore again contradict this as they seem to have captured the whole 'mould' (as warped as they may be).

Though I don't know at what stage of the production (or after production) either of these pieces came to be.

That's my spiel, I lean towards the bill being attached. I guess the only way to conclusively find out the answer would be to look inside the MoM helmet.
