Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Now with Pics!

Re: Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Updates 02/23/13

Here's a pic of me with the table today. I'm REALLY happy with how the banner looks. We were concerned it might not get here in time for the convention, but it was actually waiting for us when we got to the hotel which was a nice surprise. :)

Re: Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Updates 02/23/13

I'll be there for the first time with a few friends. I kind of wanted to see if it was something I could take my 9 year old to.

Re: Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Updates 02/23/13

Unfortuantely a family member needed me to attend to them for some planned sugery, so couldn't fly up as I wanted. I guess next year.

Re: Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Updates 02/23/13

First Con ever and I am surprised at how much fun it was. I heard that this was the first year for a lot of things and having both sides of the center open on the 4th floor was one of them. I hope they have a slightly better lay but in the future. I can not honestly say if I'll go again next year but I do recomend going all 3 days if possible. First day is pretty much just getting your berings then the rest of the week you can bee line to the important stuff. I can't begin to think of all the things I'd have missed if I just went one day.

I'm glad you enjoyed the con. This year is the first year that the con took over the ENTIRE convention center so there were definitely some growing pains. Overall, it went surprisingly smoothly and was a rousing success for me and my author partners.

We had not only Aaron at our table, but Ren is old friends with Alexis Cruz from Stargate and Stargate SG-1 and he came out to help us as well. We made some amazing contacts and had a lot of fun.

Re: Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Updates 02/23/13

I tried looking for you guys, but I swear that place was HUGE this year. In the 5 years I have gone I was, for the first time, lost as all hell when I walked in there. I must have walked the entire floor 3-4 times and still seeing booths I never came across the previous times!

It was VERY fun. Extremely crowded, but boy was the true spirit of a comicon there. So many more costumed characters and just a ton of people who really looked like they had a wonderful time.

I did almost everything I wanted to do with my VIP pass. Everyone was very respectful and no one gave me a hard time about my front of line privileges (to my face, anyway). The panels were awesome. I agree, there was growing pains, but given how much larger it was they did a really great job and I see it getting fine tuned down even more for next year as they improve logistics.

Re: Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Updates 02/23/13

Hey, guys. I thought I'd share the Talaria Press post-con thanks post here since several RPFers were at the con this year and are part of what made the con amazing:

Another Emerald City ComiCon is in the books and now that some of the post-con soreness has subsided, we’d like to take a moment to update folks on how things went and say a few heartfelt “thank yous”.

This was our second year having a presence at ECCC and it was an unmitigated, rousing success. We sold nearly double the number of books we sold in 2012 and were also fortunate enough to meet some amazing people and make some fantastic connections.

With that in mind, we’d like to offer the following thanks:

  • To the Emerald City ComiCon leadership, staff, and minion core. Thank you for your continued kindness and support. Even with a couple of hiccups this year, the experience of working with ECCC has been invariably positive and we look forward to continuing to develop our professional relationship with the convention.
  • To Aaron Douglas and Alexis Cruz. Wow. It’s safe to say that we were all blown away by the willingness of these two busy men to take time out of their full schedules and come down on their own dimes to help us out. We, as a whole, are absolutely humbled by the generosity of both Aaron and Alexis. You are both true gentlemen.
  • And finally (and most importantly) to the fans and ECCC attendees. Thank you for coming out and sharing your passion for comics, sci-fi, fantasy, and your other loves. It’s always incredible to see folks letting their geek flags fly!

Again, thank you for making ECCC 2013 the most amazing experience yet. We’re already looking forward to 2014!

Sincerely, and with much love…

Your Talaria Press Founders

I had no idea they took up the entire convention center this year. I decided to attend an event at the Museum of Flight on Saturday (got to meet a 7-time astronaut) and bagged on the con this year.
I've never heard as much mainstream media attention to the con as I heard this year, and several co-workers went.
I might make sure to go next year, and if I do, I'll be trying to get an artist table as I've enough work to show, easily...

Re: Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Updates 02/23/13

We had an adventure for sure! Got to meet a few RPF people, and we got lots of pictures at the convention. We got our car locked in a parking garage that wasn't going to open till monday morning, till we caught a security guard who let us in and opened the place up to get it out, then saturday, someone stole the wife's badge, monday morning we got a ticket even though we were parked in the hotel parking lot (which the hotel "fixed" ) ,lots of other stories, good and bad. All in all it was a memorable weekend.

My wife was Lara Croft saturday, and I was a last minute Nathan Drake. We talked to Wil Wheaton in our hotel elevator for a bit and he liked the costume, and my brother worked out in the hotel gym with Felicia Day, and had a few beers in a bar with Skrillex to name a few.

Re: Emerald City ComiCon 2013 - Pics

I didn't get many pics this year, but here's what I managed to snap. Most of these are from Friday.

No idea what this costume is from, but it looked pretty sweet.

There were several Banes in attendance of varying quality. This was one of the better ones.

Black Widow and Hawkeye.

Old school Logan was accomplished with some pretty awesome prosthetic work.

This fellow is a member of the SCA and engages in re-enacted combat in this plate armor. Very nice guy and super-excited to share his passion for armor.

I did a major double-take on this kid. From about 15 feet away, he was a dead ringer for Chris Evans.

I love this Hawkman so much. The wings actually fold and extend and span about 8 feet across.

Oh, and then this happened! :behave

And that's all I got. Hope you all enjoy them. :)

I saw some great costumes too. The first guy,I'm not sure what char. he is but the helmet is an NCR Ranger helmet from Fallout New Vegas., and the Logan I know is an RPF member.

Here's a couple of my pics I snatched(didn't want to post too many at once):

Thanks for posting the pics!

I've posted a roll-up of our first scale model display, Model Mayhem on my site:

Model Mayhem at Emerald City ComiCon 2013 | Christopher Doll

This was a great opportunity for the Seattle area SF/Fantasy/Horror model builders, easily the biggest crowd we've had access to for one of our shows in many years. The club stepped up and brought in a bunch of their models to show people that the hobby is still alive and well.

We're in discussion to expand the show next year, including a contest.

Thanks for looking!

I really enjoyed Model Mayhem. It was out of the way, but most who looked through the map or checked ECCC's updates knew it was there. I'm not an expert model builder or anything but I'm sure the addition of a contest will bring out more builders next year.

That being said, I think being out of the way might be a good thing. You probably don't want hordes of people bumping against your tables every 5 seconds and knocking down models.

People were pretty well-behaved - the worst was the one guy who didn't bother to ask permission to photograph the models... and then proceeded to precariously hold his remote flash right over some of the more delicate ones to take pics while saying "I hope I don't drop this".

Buddy, that expensive-looking remote flash might leave the room before you do... at a very high velocity

Heh, I was nervous just getting close to the tables. I figured if you were putting anything directly over the table at all you were too close. Maybe a buffer table or a roped off space to keep accident prone (costumed/low visibility) people, children or goofs back a safe distance next year?

We were handed the show a bit late in the game, so ropes weren't an option. Next year we'll likely go that route, though, just to be safe. Especially since we'll be opening up the contest to a wider audience. Good thought!

I'm with you the guy hoving over something he could break, but once something goes into the con, you have to accept that people are going to likely take photos of it. If you can't handle that, you probably shouldn't being them.

I'm sure a roped off buffer zone and a well placed sign will ease most worries for next year. If you stand back and zoom don't you get less proportionally distorted pictures anyways? or do you need to be right up for macro...

Attendance numbers for this year were just announced and it appears that around 64,000 people came through the doors during ECCC this year.

That's up 11,000 from last year!
