I just finished this Elizabeth Comstock from Bioshock Infinite costume. Everything but the corset was handmade. This was my first sewing project since Jr. High, so it was quite a challenge. I was able to make the skirt and bolero by modifying modern Simplicity patterns. The petticoats are made of various layers crinoline and I must admit, my grandmother made it! My sister and I both used it in our weddings and now it has been repurposed for costuming. I'm currently looking for the cameo choker pieces and I think I've found a good replica on Etsy. The corset came from a website called corsetsqueen.com. There merchandise is fantastic, reasonably priced, and they usually have BOGO sales happening.
I'm really proud of how the costume came out in the end. I did wind up having some trouble with the arms of the jacket, but was eventually able to get it all adjusted to fit comfortably. I recently completely redid the waistband on the skirt, too. Sure, the corset covered my first, very sloppy, novice job, but I hated knowing that it looked bad underneath. I ripped it all out last week, remade the waistband, and reattached. Now it's beautiful!
My next step, aside from acquiring the choker pieces, is to make little plushies of coins, salts, and other supplies to throw out to guests at the 2014 Phoenix ComiCon. That's going to be too fun!
I hope you all like my newbie attempt at a first costume. As I go along, I'm sure I'll keep getting better.
