Egon's Spider-man costume. NEW PHOTOS! Nov 2, 2014,

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Thanks! Great photos for reference too. I had a hard time perfectly lining up the web patterns, but they are very close. Getting those markers you used, I should be able to fix the small offsets with those.

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Was making good progress with my Spider-man but now I'm just completely frustrated. On my left shoulder I cannot get the last web line section to line up properly. I've tried and tried and tried, to the point the fabric is now beginning to look worn out. Little white snagged spots are onthe red section now. :-/ I have no idea how I'll even be able to fix that. Maybe a red marker?

I don't even want to work on this anymore. I know I will but I'm just frustrated.. I guess I could just leave that one line misaligned, but it looks weird...

I'm not even looking forward to trying to attach the right arm to the shoulder. How frustrating will it be if I attach the right arm to the right shoulder and it comes out perfectly aligned. Sounds backwards.. but I think you get my point.

At this point I'm considering someone else finishing it, but as I keep telling myself, I've done all the work so far, I should finish it myself.

Update!

It's a rollercoaster ride, this costume. With Birgit's help, I held the fabric and she pinned it into place. FINALLY.

There is some extra fabric under the shoulder that needs to be trimmed away. I think it may be the cause of some of the weird bulking and wrinkles.

Or I guess those wrinkles could be from the weird way I had to stretch the fabric to align the line properly.

Thoughts?

In this image it looks almost as if the fabric along the seam is pinched between two lines of stitching, but its not, it's just wrinkling because of my arm movement.

Don't get discouraged, I've been told by a lot of people that they have issues with getting all the weblines to match up perfectly on their suits. You are doing a fantastic job so far - very impressed you have been able to do it on your own (y)thumbsup

Thanks TJack. My one comfort is that if anything might go seriously wrong with this costume is that I have another print waiting for me to sew.

Test photo. Needs taken in in some places but it's finally coming together nicely. The only thing I hate about this costume is how it snags on just about everything, and because it's printed onto white fabric, the white pops through when it snags.

One more thing. Signing up for Planet Fitness today :D Gotta bulk up a little and get rid of that belly.

Looks awesome, man, congrats!

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Thanks Lunaman. I love this costume. I'm a bit unhappy with some of it, mainly the left hand which is a bit screwed up because of the lousy original cuts I made. I've had to take out another part of the shoulder seam on the right shoulder. Trying to line up one last line again. Same issue as the last time.
Also the left hand seams are a bit different than the right hand, again because of the lousy cuts I made. Although the costume hasn't turned out perfect, I learned a lot for the next project. Might try adding the zippers up the back tonight.

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Last night I took my Spider-man suit to a local place that does alterations to have them install the invisible zipper up the back of my Spider-man costume. I have worked incredibly hard on this costume and on getting it right. I have been extremely frustrated over it at times to the point where I didn't want to work on it anymore. I continued working on my costume, even with how it could frustrate me. The only help I've received from my wife helping me fit the costume more by pinning it while I wore it inside out. She helped me so much by doing such a simple thing and I love her! I feel as though I have done an outstanding job putting this costume together, but that the invisible zipper is just not something I have the skills to tackle at this time. I'm really excited about this costume finally being finished. After I get it back I just need to fix some spots where some seams have popped and then add the eyes to the mask.

I am a little concerned though that at the alteration shop they took no measurements for zipper placement when I was there. I'm wondering how they will properly attach the zipper with the proper stretch in the suit for my height, or should it just naturally work out since the suit is already stretchable and sewn together? I'm unsure of how this works. I wrote them and asked them if they'd need me to come back in for measurements, etc. They are closed today so I am guessing I should hear from them sometime tomorrow.

Glad to hear the project is coming together for you.

You definitely need them to measure the amount of stretch needed in the spine. The suit is stretchable, but the zipper isn't, so if they don't have the fabric stretched the right amount and pinned to the right start and end points when they install the zipper, you won't be able to fit into the suit. This is VERY important, especially since you're tall and decided to go with a straight zip, which means there's little forgiveness for error in the rear seam.

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Went back in today and I'm glad I did. They now really understand what needs to be done with the zipper. In fact I need a longer zipper. Ordered one tonight. :)

Awesome work man, and cannot wait to see how this looks in the end!

I've debated on putting together my own suit for a long time, so seeing this is giving me the courage i needed to give it a go!

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Bray: It's not super easy, but it isn't impossible either. I'm very happy to see that this topic has helped you get up the courage to do this project. I'll admit, as you can see in my earlier posts, it's been a frustrating ride, but it's become a very good learning experience along the way. :)

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Pretty much finished, except I want to go over the webbing and make it darker, and get the zipper redone. I know TrophyWife has done better than that.

The lenses are TJacks, but the frames are not, not really. I could not get the frames to shape properly and actually ended up cracking one of them by accident. Not saying anything against his frames, they are outstanding! I just couldn't work them out and then.. crack.. I then glued the frame back together and reshaped it again, but when trying to glue the frames to the face, they just wouldn't fit like I wanted. So I went to Michaels and bought some felt stick on, and used the plastic frames as templates and cut the felt to shape. I then glued on the lens pieces from TJack onto them and my wife, Birgit, applied them to the mask while I was wearing it. I actually really love the fabric look of them and TJack's lenses make them look good!

Sad to hear about the woes with the original frames, but great to hear about the solution and the completion of the sewing! It all looks great!

Are you planning to darken the weblines?

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Thanks! Yes, I'm planning to do that as soon as I get some Micron's! :)

Here is a more full body image. Darkened the background to focus on the costume.

Excellent work, very inspiring for sure :)

Do you have any close up shots of the felt frames? I'm just curious to see how it looks, neat idea!

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

Thanks! I do have any extreme close ups but have this picture.

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

totally impress by this thread, taking on the sewing yourself. looks so freaking good.

one question if you don't mind asking: What kind/model of sewing machine you used?
I want to buy a better one. Either that or find an invisible zipper foot attachment.

I also did the Michaels felt stick on for my lens on my first spidey suit.

Re: Egon's Spider-man costume progress and advice thread- Help needed!!!

yea I made crotch problems myself, I just used compression underwear and full length compression pants over that, turned out pretty well
